I see a local 4runner in my area for not a bad price. Comes with lots of goodies but the only thing is that its a 4cylinder. I would like something more than the 150HP I get from the 4cylinder and you can't swap it to a v6 easily or supercharge it, so what are some mods I can do to get this thing hopefully to 200HP. I don't tow much but I would like to know I can easily and quickly get up a hill with a full car and cargo loaded.
Any way to make the 4cylinder quicker?

I assume your talking about the 2.7 liter made from 1996 to 2000. Thai's right TRD makes a supercharger:

You can also buy headers, special filter, pretty much all the goodies. You can buy a supercharger for the 3.4V6 for a thousand bucks less. The demand for high performance parts for the 2.7 is low. My feeling is, Yes you can get some performance items for the 2.7, but AT A PRICE. It may be best to upgrade to a used V6, which is more common, or live with the 2.7's performance. In other words, enjoy being slow. Just my .02.

4 cylinder swap
If it is a pre 96 I`ve heard of swapping the 4 for a in-line six out of a pre 1987 supra (5MGE Toyota)...problems you also need a solid front axle. Somewhere someone is trying a post 1988 Toyota Cressida swap (7MGE). Since this is a little newer and has the oil sump in the back of the motor allowing for clearance of the IFS crossmember. These motors bolt directly to the stock transmission and require very little fabrication of the motor mounts. The wiring harness and computer should also be changed and an electric fan added in front of the rad. The 7MGE motor is rated for 195hp and has considerable torque. Sounds like alot of work for just a few extra hp. Just thought I`d mention it.

just buy the same model with the v6, i think it's cheaper in the long run. for me, I'm quite happy with my 4 banger, it's chain-drive, economical and bulletproof! power isn't that bad since I don't run wide tires. just my thought.

Don't count the engine out, it is a great design. It has a balance shaft and a timing chain and has a great reputation. The 2.7 has about the same power as the older 90 to 95 3.0 V6. In order to get 50 HP more, you are looking at something like the $3,000 supercharger and that is not installed.
Getting the 3.4 V6 you get about 183 HP and 217 lb-ft. It doesn't have the power of the new higher tech engines, but it is good for the wieght of the vehicle. Consumer Reports says you will get around 16 MPG on regular fuel. I get slightly higher with my 2WD, but getting a 2.7 4 cyl. will get better MPG for sure, but I wouldn't count on 20 MPG in the city.
