i didn't specifically request for a '17. i had asked for a '16, but i just assumed since it's towards the end of the year and there's no movement in my inquiry that i would just be in line for a '17 when it comes. i wouldn't mind a '17 at all, but like you said, i'll be waiting until spring.

I went to my local dealership and spoke to the general manager about ordering a 2017 TRD Pro in cement color and I was told by him that they would run the request through Toyota and when Toyota response or excepts the request by email then he would contact me and let me know about when to expect my 4Runner, he did tell me that the earliest would be the first weeks of January 2017.

Didn't have to wait. Called a few dealerships in the area and picked the one I wanted. They were about 5 to choose from in my city.

Anyone who had to order in told that the VIN only gets set on landing at US port? Seems odd to me that VIN is not stamped in Japan -in case ship disappears..?!

You haven't received your 4Runner yet? What did you order, I forget now.
TEP, not sure if that has any impact on when the VIN gets sent? How long does it normally take to get from the VPC to dealer?

Called my salesman and ordered mone on 9/1. It was on the ship entering the port of Houston. Drove it off the dealer lot on 9/9.

My dealer just told me the order window for 17's isn't open until December, and the '16 order window is closed.

I just made a deal to trade in my '14 Wrangler Unlimited in on a '16 Barcelona Red Trail Premium. It should be arriving to port within the next week I am told. Should have it by the end of the month. I wanted a white with KDSS but white TPs with KDSS are slim here in the southeast so I opted for the red.

Yes, I find myself in the "waiting" category. Though, I will likely forego the 2017 model, and wait for the sixth-generation that hopefully will arrive in 2018.
Why you ask? A couple of reasons. 1. I don't live in a climate or area that requires a daily 4x4. 2. My current car has been very reliable. 3. At this point, the sixth-generation is inevitable. Nothing against the fifth-gen as it's a beautiful ride, but if I'll be spending $40K when it's all said and done, I'd prefer just to wait.
Nevertheless, I am enjoying reading everybodys comments here. I would definitely like to get a 4runner to better explore West Texas, Big Bend, and the national parks in CO and Utah.

Same here. My 4th gen is starting to get tired but hardly anything has changed since it was released in 03, so I'll keep waiting for a 6th gen.

I look at it from a different angle. I'm going to get a 2017 because it will likely be the last year of a very mature platform. At this point Toyota has worked out most of the bugs so I should end up with a pretty reliable truck. Also, I know what I'm getting with the 5th gen while the 6th gen is a big question mark at this point. There is the possibility I won't like the 6th gen and will regret waiting. I have owned more than 40 new cars and trucks in my life and I have learned that having the latest and greatest isn't always what it is cracked up to be.
I definitely hear ya, and your comments do not fall on deaf ears. Right now, I'm in information gathering stage. That way, when hopefully more concrete info hits the presses on the future of the platform, I can make a decision then.
Also, I'm a bit in the opposite direction as I've never owned a new vehicle. Rather, I've bought gently used, reliable vehicles in the past. However, with the way I'm finding 4runners maintaining their value.... I'm almost being forced to buy new for peace of mind and the little difference in the price tag.
There is definitely something to be said about a mature platform and the sixth-gen will definitely have a few bugs/oddities in it as every vehicle does.
Waiting on my 2016 mgm tep with KDSS to come in from port. Had originally planned to order a 2017 trd pro(decided I would likely rip the suspension out and wanted a sunroof), then a 2017 tep(or whatever they're calling it), just so happened that my dealer found one that met all my needs for a great price and now I don't have to wait for the 2017's to start rolling in. I'm pumped.

So I am looking at 2016 4 runners now and the dealers in my area are doing invoice.
2 years ago they laughed and blew me off when I tried to get a 4 runner at invoice.
I found a Trail premium with KDSS in magnetic grey. The dealers seem very motivated to move the 2016s.
Its very tempting.
