Anyone ever own a Subaru WRX Sti?

I've been thinking of buying a 2006 Sti, 26K miles, babied, driven by a Sti 'aificionado', never raced, garaged most of the time, pampered, detailed, Stage 2, Accessport 'geek', excellent condition.

The seller is a stand-up guy, and like many on this forum, really takes care of his vehicles. Up-front, honest... can do business with him.

I've been a member of IWSTI.com: Subaru WRX STI Forums forum for three years so I've read many of the reviews and opinions there.

Wanted to ask the members of this forum as they might have owned or still own a Sti so I can get an unbiased or semi-biased opinion.

Please share your own personal experiences, longevity of parts, service experiences, tuning, tire longevity, aftermarket parts, will it send me to the poor house, positive and also negative experiences.

If you've never owned one, or have just driven one and not owned one, or have owned just the WRX version, or an EVO, with respect, these are of no interest to me. I do not want to read an EVO-Sti war commentary or about the regular WRX version because the latter is not in the same league as an Sti.

The Sti is a vehicle in and of itself and the experiences I could read and learn from here, might aid in my decision to purchase this 2006 in particular.

They are great starter vehicles for basically anything to do with speed and handling. (common Knowledge though)

Sigs and high quality vehicles... go hand in hand. Been a long time member there at Sigforum. Sig P220 .45ACP is my house pistol, a Sig P226 9mm Navy is my range pistol and a Glock 19 is my CCW.

These were the only two forums I posted in. Nice quality pics from the Sig Forum members of the STi and very positive recommendations there as well.

I've been thinking that the 2006 STi will be a very nice garage-mate to the 2007 4Runner Sport V8 already here. We'll see what unfolds.

Never owned one , but driven one a few times and the are a barnburner. Fast as hell and handle awesome with Sub's AWD . I real blast !!!

I've driven a hand full of WRX's a couple STI's and a couple of regular models .. I noticed that the back end felt a bit floaty to me.. it still bit hard but just didnt feel solid.. other than that they are fantastic cars.

That's a very strong and erroneous statement you made especially when you've never spoken to the seller, nor have seen the pics or have read all of his posts on the iwsti forum.

Some folks just like to do the work on their vehicles just like some like to buy lots of expensive knives and guns, not to use 'em but only to have them as 'safe queens'.

Let's please keep it back on track re: owner experiences only. I've got a lot of experience buying and selling vehicles, trucks, fire trucks, etc... that's my business... just want STi owner's experiences as I'm light in that area of specialized knowledge.

I owned an 07' STI, loved it, most of the time. As far as handling and performance the car was unbelievably awesome, it almost felt un-crashable (if that's possible), and mine was stock. They do have a considerable amount under steer though, but again, that's stock. As far as longevity of the parts and reliability I can only say so much, I had the car for 2 years, put 37k on it, drove it two and from florida, and drove it HARD (Sometimes). Never once had a problem with reliability or anything like that, and it always drove like it was new.

The reason I say I loved it MOST of the time because the STI lacks a decent amount of luxury and comfortably. For intense the hard seats, there is NO leg room in the back seat, the stiff ride, stiff transmission, stiff pedals, ROAD NOISE, etc... The car is really only built for one thing, and that's performance.

All in all though great car just remember you sacrifice comfort for performance.

I spent alot of time on Subaru forums and have alot of friends that drive them. The COBB stage 2 (which I'm pretty sure is what he's talking about) is one of the MOST common mods, and one of the first many do with these cars.

Here is my daily driver...

It's not an STi (so I know you said its not what you want:flipoff its a WRX ... with a 2.5L motor swapped in and all the supporting mods, STi brakes, Ohlins coilovers, every bushing in the car is now poly, etc. etc.

I have a mod list 2 full pages long if you actually want to see it :dancin:

I know the previous owners very well. It had definately been raced, driven hard, etc its entire life. The car was a track rat & development car for a subaru performance company (TurnInConcepts).

If you want a plush car, that's not it. With some mild modifications, the power can be great, and the handling can be fantastic as well if you set the car up correctly. If the car is stock or not set up correctly, it can be a bit frustrating at the limit. Honestly, even a good performance alignment with stock suspension can liven things up a good bit.

The car can send you to the poor house if you start sinking money into mods and don't have some discipline. If you leave the car alone (relatively stock) and don't beat on it too hard, then you shouldn't see much for unwanted maintenance.

I have been pretty heavy into the subaru community and modifying them for the last 6 years so feel free to ask whatever.

If you feel good about how it was taken care of and are comfortable with the negotiated price, it sounds like a terrific purchase.

I always wanted a WRX (STi or not).

For the money, you won't find many cars that handle as well.
