Anyone shopping assault rifles?

KC u are right about the Mini-14 not being considered an assault rifle. Thats why it isn't on the gov'ts radar. It is just as effective as any .223 and also can be easily modified. 30 round clips are readily available. Some of my bros have fully automatic Mini-14s. Ready for the next L.A. riots!

I was in the same position as you about a year ago and decided to spread the cost out over a few months by building it myself. I purchased a stripped lower from Palmetto State Armory (PSA), an MOE lower build kit from PSA, and a basic flat top 16" upper from PSA. I started ordering stuff whenever it went on sale for various holidays. I spent about $625 on the rifle before optics. Building was pretty easy, I printed out instructions from AR15.com, watched a youtube video, and was done in about an hour.
The Smith and Wesson M&P series is pretty good for the money. I was leaning towards the M&P OR (optics ready) before I decided to build.
I am not knocking the Daniel Defense or other high end stuff, my friend has one and I really like it, but don't feel like you have to spend $1500 to get something reliable.

An assault weapon is normally defined as an intermediate caliber, with removable mags, bayonet lug, and flash suppressor, these weapons resemble assault rifles in every way but are not select fire. Assault weapon is a political term to trick the public into thinking these are military assault rifles. Assault rifles are military weapons and are not normally available to the general public.

As for the reloading question it's hard to go wrong with Dillion or RCBS equipment. Reloading can be about volume ( progressive reloaders) or quality ( single stage loaders ). Progressives can also produce quality ammo with an experienced operator.

As it has been stated on the first page, you cannot buy a REAL 'assault rifle' right out of the store. They have the ability to fire full-auto, while assault-style rifles do not. Anyway, the full-auto weapons are legal to own, but expensive -- so long as you are properly "checked out" by authorities and purchase the necessary tax stamp.

For your garden-variety, semi-auto rifle.....there are plenty from which to choose; but many in DC would love to change that if they could. With Obama getting re-elected and a majority Democrat Senate, anything is possible and the only stopgap is a contingent of conservatives in the House. We all know that we can no longer count on the SCOTUS to protect our liberty!

I'd consider a Bushmaster, but be sure it is .223 and not .22 LR (they do sell one that has interchangeable barrels and fires both types of ammo). You can get one at D1ck's Sporting goods for about $700 to $900, depending upon the particular model. One of them even has a scope included.

Ammo is getting costly, so be sure to stock up while you can.

Yes... I realize the rifles available to most people are not selectable full auto weapons. I'm not sure who doesn't understand that so I'm not sure why it keeps getting repeated over... and over... and over. I used the term to describe the weapons (and parts!) that would surely be banned once again if the same legislation is passed again, which was dubiously nicknamed the assault weapon ban. I've been shooting since I was 5 so I'm not totally new to this, just looking for suggestions on ARs and AKs. :AK47:


I've found some interesting build information online, esp on the AR15 forums. I can probably build something for about $100 more than the price of the aforementioned M&P Sport so I'm trying to find if the difference in quality is worth it, especially given my positive experience with S&W firearms so far. because anyone who knows even the most remote basics of guns knows that the assault rifle ban is bull**** and it infuriates us all to no end on the governments definition of an assault weapon, as opposed to the actual definition of a assault weapon, i know, you know this, but doesn't it piss you off anyways? i think that's why people keep repeating it, not telling you anything,but just *****ing in general, and i completely agree with all of it.


that said, alot of good suggestions here, personally i'd build one....i recently just picked up a bushmaster m4 and love it, the thing is though it's my first of this type everything before was a hunting style rifle or something i considered a collectors piece, this was my first "black gun"...now that i've been using it for a few weeks now i've come to the conclusion i need/want to start dressing it up like a barbie with all of the other guy on the net, well once i started looking into it, i realized the way i hold and want to use my gun won't really work with the one i have, too many modification to be worth it in the end, so i'm currently looking to build one to my specs for how i envision to use it and what is comfortable to me.

really i would suggest that you go out and play with a buddies and figure out what you really care about in terms of length,grips,rails,sights and all of the rest....i'm an odd ball and actually have a 3x9~52mm redfeild revenge scope on my M4 with the peek through sight mounts....problem is the front sight on a m4 is fixed and cannot be removed without a new block, i wanted a set of flip sights for back up, so all of that stuff together is about the price of just building the gun the way i want it from scratch , so again it's like what others are saying what is this gun for and how do you plan on using it?

that said, i too like the .223/5.56 chambering as i've been noticing that the local shops tend to have sales on one or the other at any given time, it really is nice to have to optons to choose from, it feels like i'm saving a ton of money on ammo since i'm always buying it on sale....$10.99 a box 5.56 good brass from cableas is going on sale next month for around $6 a box of 20 and then the similar .223 the month after. At least that's what the guy behind the counter was telling me in our 30min long conversation about ammo, lol.....

As far as the magpul kit is concerned that is how it came in the box.

I would think it would be more of an OD green maybe a little lighter than that?

There are a ton of AR variations to choose from these days. Personally, I would only buy a Colt due to the military specs and the fact that it's all produced in-house. YMMV.

For what it's worth, I had an armorer re-certification class recently and the instructor - who is the armorer for San Diego PD SWAT team - showed us some non-Colt AR's that they had put through the paces to see if they should switch from Colt to cheaper alternatives. There were some nasty failures shown (including a barrel on one that looked like it had been ripped apart - I forget the manufacturer). In contrast, he said they intentionally did not lube one Colt AR and it fired for 18,000 rounds before it failed to fire.

That said, most failures have more to do with the magazines than the weapon, itself, so if you buy high-quality mags AND you're not shooting 1,000's of rounds a day like they are, the other options may be good to go.

But I just thought I'd throw that out there.

^^everyone has a right to there brand bias's, I sure as hell have mine. To date all AR's that I have ever purchased fully assembled have been LWRC. Sure, they're expensive, but the tolerances and quality are second to none and I can basically hammer nails with them at 100 yds all day

Yeah, I think the drawback with the Colt is the lack of some of the "fancier" components that some of the other manufacturers have (match barrels, better sights, etc.). The problem, I think, is that some of the guns with a "better" X or Y than Colt will often have another part that's made in Honduras .

But military-spec cuts both ways: Colt IS the lowest bidder, so while all the parts are reliable, they're fairly vanilla and haven't changed much in the last 25 years. If someone wants something tricked-out or accurate to a sniper-tolerance, Colt might not be the best way to go.

I have the 6920 for work and like it, though I'd prefer a shorter barrel. If and when I buy my own, that's the biggest change I'd make.

I'm not aware of one thing Obummer has done to impede on gun owners rights, or anything pending.

But since he's a D (and black to boot) and all, the doomsday preppers loooove to stock up on guns and ammo for jesus.

Obama is now working with the UN on a world wide gun treaty which will ban guns. Tune into Alex jones if you want the cliff note version of the actions this bunch of socialists are engaging in.
