ARB Safari Snorkel Install

Though I certainly respect the amount of meticulous work, prep, patience, and cajones to do this mod to the 4R, the rational side of me tells me a few things:

1) This thing is absolutely hideous.
2) Unless you live in a part of the world where your town gets floods on an annual basis, or you really like to take your 4R under deep waters during your spare time, I don't see the point.
3) You can pretty much kiss your T4R's resale goodbye after doing this mod.
4) And lastly, did I mention this thing is just absolutely hideous?

It's beautiful.
If you're going that deep in water, you're frying your electronics and ruining your truck. This helps with dust.
Simple analysis of resale value tells me that they are (and have been for a while) in demand. Have seen multiple vehicles on dealer lots with snorkels (not just 4runners). It's even a factory option for some companies in certain countries. What you meant to say is that you'll never get the $$ back that you put into it if you sell it, which would be correct. But, then again, if you're cutting a hole in it larger than what's seen in some adult films, you're not worried about resale value.

on a side note, for some of the folks that think the snorkel is for water only, I believe Brother [MENTION=124732]LawnDart[/MENTION] has mentioned several times it gets your fresh air intake up out of the dust line if your tailing another vehicle in arid conditions. It also helps to promote cooler, clearer air being brought into the engine bay.

And I opted to seal the two holes in the air box using marine grade sealant.

Whoever installed the snorkel and missed it, seal those holes in the airbox or else it defeats the purpose. Now who's got the cabin relocation kit for the alternator :brick:

It's an option, it is NOT required. I took the vehicle through water DEEPER then the the bottom of the airbox and you need to remember that the actual intake post-air-filter is on TOP of the airbox. There's a ton of air pressure in the airbox, which wants to force air OUT (and water) of the airbox or prevent it from ever getting in in the first place. You can seal the box, but you will collect water over time. I opted to leave mine open.

Just an update. Spent the last week in Mexico on multiple sandy and very dusty tracks. Snorkel performed flawlessly. Airbox was significantly cleaner than my last trip without it. Averaged 17-20mpg with a full camping load and roof tent; pretty much the same as before.

I plan on installing the snorkel mainly because I have been in danger-close water two times and I see the snorkel as cheap insurance against accidental water ingestion. Would you recommend I seal the holes if I plan on using the snorkel to guard against deep water? Or will it be OK to leave them open in and still protect against deep water?

I've gone to a little over the door handles without issue. My airbox isn't sealed, which is why ARB is saying it's an option but it's not required. I also wouldn't want water sitting around in the airbox, so having a way for it to drain isn't a bad thing.

While I agree that many people would go for the snorkel, I personally would pass unless I knew the person who installed it. Too many "experts" doing crappy install work out there...

Doubtful, there are so many folks paying large premiums for appearance packages it would probably be a selling point for resale. People buy trucks with aftermarket bumpers all the time, I would bet it has no impact on resale.

For those who are interested. The pre-cleaner is OEM world market 80 Series Land Cruiser.

Since there have been questions about air flow rates with this and the ARB Ram Head, I did a simple comparison of the two.

Non-dyno, air temp at 67° F. CFM at the Mass Airflow Sensor

RPM. ARB Cfm. OEM Birdfeeder Cfm

2000, 84.38, 81.25

3500, 155.00, 152.50

5000, 269.38, 263.13

Yes, this is more restrictive than the Ram Air ARB head.

I walked to my front window to look at where door handles are on truck... That is some deep water!

It does. No issue whatsoever. The tube protruding from the TRD air box does not have the raised section which needs to be filed down in order to fit the rubber sleeve which mates the snorkel to the air box.

Ill be honest though... I do live in AZ and its dusty here, but I mainly drive to work and home.. lets say 5% off-road and 95% on road so no really dust issues...

With that being said... I want to do it because it looks so damn good... I really like how it turns the 4Runner into a beast!

I'm actually in the opposite camp. I think it makes the truck look pretty terrible. The only reason I did it was for the extra insurance on water crossings. That being said I've noticed no drawbacks in normal driving.

Kinda curious about performance gains with it. This is much more similar to a true CAI, although the angles of the snorkel aren't quite as smooth as the CAIs I'm familiar with. On my silly little VWs and Audis, a CAI similar to a snorkel (but in the engine bay) provides immediately noticeable performance gains.

You can put me in the "it looks cool" column, but the only dust I'll probably encounter in the next few years is in my living room. :moping:

I feel the same, they don't really suit the angular factory lines Imo way to round -anyway my last outing had me thinking..

After looking at a video someone took this weekend I wondered if I'm teetering on the border, I already have a three inch lift and the rainy season has not really begun yet!
