Axle wrap cure?

CAN-03runner

New member
My truck is finally ready to drive. But I have axle wrap.

Truck = 1984 4runner, with V6 3VZ, V6 rear axle, welded 4.88's, and spring over axle leaf springs with Ubolt flip kit and 33" MT.

I'd like to get this fixed as soon as I can. Below are 2 options I found. Northwest looks like the ubolt is not flipped so that might not be an option anymore.

My trails will be mixed rock and mud. But no deep mudding. I have the budbuilt skids on my 2003 4runner so I know Bud is great to talk to, and makes quality stuff, so if this is what I need to fix my problem I will purchase them right away from him.

Unless someone can point me to some other products better suited.

I would skip the NWOR one, doesnt appear to have a shackle.

You want one with a shackle so that it will flex with the rear end, rather than sauce the suspension to bind. Budbuilt make some great stuff (Im also running one of his skids) and I believe its 100% bolt on. But I think your on the right track.

An other option could be to swap out the springs. I have no firsthand expierence with them, but Iv heard that the Allpro and TG springs flex well and dont wrap as much as the stockers.

Ok, I think I see a shackle on the budbuilt on the frame side. Searched some more under the term anti-wrap bar. Seen a few other designs. So a joint would make it go up and down. But the addition of the shackle would give it some rotation at the shackle during the up and down movement too. Is how Otherwise the axle would get pushed or pulled as the suspension flexed and the traction bar cycled up and down. I'm visualing it move in my head.

I don't want to buy new springs. It defeats the purpose of buying a truck with a lift already. But I don't mind adding stuff like traction/anti-wrap bars to improve on what is already there.

Sounds like you need an anti wrap bar.. Do you have a welder? If so

I don't have a welder. I'm a network engineer geek....but damit, it always come down to welding....i'm going to have to learn. I would need to explain to a welder what I want done.

Sounds like the Bolt on budbuilt is a good option for you then.

Have you tried replacing your shocks?

Interesting you mention shocks. The shocks have been mounted at angle. But the mounting point is at the back. As I've been looking at traction/anti-wrap bars I started to notice that most who have angled the shocks have them mounted in the front. Or at least as far as I can tell in the pictures.

I wonder if the mounting position of the shocks play a role. In that with the shocks at the rear of the axle, they help push down on the back causing the axle to turn upwards and emphasizing the problem. With the shocks mounted in the front of the axle they would provide some extra resistance when the axle wants to turn up. ???
