Wonder if the dealer can install the Back up camera after the sale or it's only available when new. I bought my SR5 with out it.

The dealer can do anything.....just how much it will cost you! You would need to have your mirror replaced with the correct one, camera installed, wire harnesses run, etc. I don't see this being inexpensive. Unless you really need it I do not think it would be cost beneficial. Only way to know is call your dealer. I know they make aftermarket cameras that you can install on plate frames, etc. so you do have options. Since you have the SR5 you have the rear sonar, do you need the camera? Personally I wanted the auto-dimming mirror, did not care about the camera but one did not come without the other.

Back up camera looks cool but I would not pay the $$ to install, in fact I wasn't happy paying for it when I bought the car! Can't really see too good with it. Might want to look aftermarket if you really want one that works well with better visual.

There may be a chance that the wiring is already there. Couldn't be too hard to replace the mirror and pop the camera in, assuming there is a plug filling the place the camera would usually be).
Does the part look like it comes with any wiring? If not the harness is probably up in the headliner somewhere.

I don't have the camera on my runner, but do have it on my Tacoma. For me, it's pretty useless. It's like the passenger side mirror in that "objects are closer than they appear".
When I'm in reverse in the Tacoma, I've pretty much trained myself to ignore the camera.

While yes I have the rear sonar, the backup camera comes with the auto-dimming mirror and my wife is the primary driver and ..... no need to say more,lol. It is an expensive system but is OEM and I'm sure the truck is pre-wired for it. Once I return to the US will call the dealer to see how much this is going to cost me. Thanks.

I love the backup camera as well. I admit I do have it on the navigation screen, and can understand how the picture in the mirror might not work as well.
I especially like to use it to make sure I am parked in enough for my garage door to close but still have enough room in front of the car to walk!!

I got it in a dealer screw up when I got my sr5 thinking I would never use it. Turns out it is really useful for 2 things.
1. You can check it in parking lots or driveways to make sure 2 year old "Jimmy" isn't about to get run over crawling behind the car. It also helps when you cant remember if there was a pole behind you or not.
2. Its really awesome with a trailer hitch. I can back up in perfect alignment and correct distance with no assistance needed. I defiantly think its worth the $0 I spent, but I think its reasonable to pay $600. Never know, might save a life.

1) Backup camera is a great invention. No doubt that it has and will save a kids life
2) Backup camera in the 4runner is OK - definately better camera's out there. If the wiring is there then a non-OEM solution may still be able to use that wiring
3) Camera with sonar is a great combination so if you add it to the SR5 you will have a great system

I too checked with a dealer and they said not an available option that a dealer can install. Also, no indication on the Toyota web site that it is an afterthought accessory. Did they tell you it can be done after the fact, or was that the cost of the option when new? If it can be retroed in, I will look for a new dealership to give me a price. Thanks.

It is funny how in this economy dealers, or anyone, can turn away work. If your new 4R was rear ended (quick, knock on wood!) you KNOW they could order the camera to replace it at least. You KNOW your mirror could be replaced if for some reason it was faulty. Toyota HAS the parts, and the dealer HAS access to them, but sometimes it seems like they just don't want to do the work, almost punishing people for not buying them in the package originally. (sorry Timmy, you did not eat all your beans, you can't have desert.) The only issue is wiring, that might (and I stress might) be their only concern. However, when I was looking at a couple pre-owned before this one I asked a few dealers if they could replace the mirror for an auto-dimming one, each one did not blink and eye and said yes, no problem, so they know power exists up top. With the back up cam it is a matter of getting the feed to it.

The dealer probably won't install it for you--they don't want to deal with the headache of waranty should something go wrong or if you end up with rust on the liftgate from them cutting a hole in it. They can get the parts. I didn't check on what the price is on the camera for the 4Runner. But the Tacoma's is over $700.

Can you or anyone post a picture of the camera location? I haven't seen one and since I'm on the other side of the world can't really go to a dealer( they don't sell 4Runners here). I can do the installation if the wirring is there if not will have to look for an aftermarket option.

For some reason, my '08 didn't come with the auto dimming mirror, so recently I asked the dealer if it was possible to upgrade. He said no problem and then asked if I wanted the backup camera as well...so, I guess all the wiring is there....
The part # i believe is 00016-00085. I did not buy the part, but they printed out the directions for me. The dealer said they would install, but they didn't have a price for me on how much the install would be on top of the price of the part.
From the directions, all the connectors are already there. I assume the same main wiring is used in every 2010 4runner (SR5 at least) regardless if back up camera is installed or not. An example from the directions:
Connect MALE RCA video connector of camera extension harness to VIDEO INPUT (yellow connector) of Mirror Harness. Connect MALE DC power connector of camera extension harness to camera power output (black connector)of Rearsight mirror harness. Etc...
Seems like everything is labeled once you remove the map light assembly, left side kick panel, etc... so I don't know why the dealership would not install if that is what they are saying. It looks pretty straightforward, especially for certified toyota technicians.
Also, you do not have to drill a hole to mount the camera, double sided tape is used. You then remove the the phillips screw from the left license plate lighting assembly, and then route the camera harness inside the trim piece

I have an appointment for my first oil change in about two weeks and I will be sure to ask about it when I go because depending on the $$$ I would be down for one!
I also have it in my Tacoma. At first I thought the same thing as you, it took me a while to get used to it because it is different that others on the market. To get used to it, I put a receiver in the hitch to guage the depth of the camera, and had it in there for a few months. I have removed it and now I am used to it, and it is pretty accurate and nice to have.
