Bajarack or rear bumper w/swingout

I'm looking for some opinions guys, I want/need a place to put my spare tire (33) and gear (hi lift, shovel, tools etc.) to keep them from taking up space and rattling around. I had built a wood rack for everything that I had to break apart to get unstuck at Kane Creek Canyon in Moab :rip:, but that let everything rattle too much anyway. So my question is what would be better/smarter, a bajarack(half rack not full) or something like the CBI rear bumper with swingout and all the goodies to hold everything. BTW I like the price of the bajarack better then the CBI(I know the quality is amazing though).

IMO everyone will chose the CBI rear swing out. It just looks awesome and it keeps the weight closer to center of gravity which is always a good thing. But damn is it expensive.

Might want to consider 4xinnovations for a rear bumper as well. They make good stuff and I think the price is a little better too.

Lots of good points in this thread already, the main thing for me is not having to lift the tire onto/off of the roof though.

Higher COG and possible back injury when you put on the roof = bad idea in my book. Treat yourself to a nice swing out. I really like the CBI hybrid except for the latching mechanism which imo sucks. I ordered a Savage with the swing because it is the only tube option out there.

I have the savage with swing out, and love it.... Less $$ and weight than cbi. For additional storage, get the rack... Both are probably around the price of the cbi.

That's a good point, I'm just not in love with tube bumpers. The savage is a good price though.

both would be great to have, but I'd go with a rear swing 1st of course. I had my spare on the roof last wheeling trip out, and will probably never do that again, it's just a PITA!!

*The Savage rear swing is badass I've seen it in person. Good alternative and much more affordable.

Yea screw the tire on the roof. I have enough issues rolling from being off camber with small tires and not huge lift...

pshh all you guys whining about tires on the roof, try having the equivalent of 3 tires up there and not fudging your pants on the trails

Both- It was a PITA, and other reasons like not being able to get into my garage was the main one for me personally. Or the possibility of my wife not being able to change a flat if need be, (yes she knows how to change a flat tire & yes she's a keeper!) she does drive the 4R quite a bit.

Putting it up there isn't so bad... It's mainly a PITA getting it down safety. I imagine a full size 33" spare is pretty heavy, but not undoable, just not my cup of tea though.

I'm probably going to keep my spare in the cargo area for the next wheeling trip. Good luck!

I'd recommend the CBI (or Savage) with rear swing but I would opt for something different than mine. I would go for a shorter single swing out or a double swing hinged on each side. The reason for this is the big tire swing takes a bunch of space behind truck to open and it's a pain to get into back of truck quickly. Love mine but if I ever get really motivated I might try to convert mine to a different swing design one day but I have too much else to finish first.

Haha yeah i guess, i really like the tent though its great to be able to just stop and unfold the tent and be enjoying a cold one in like 5 minutes lol.

How do you have yours mounted, it looks good! I had been using thule feet but the pressure points they caused made the roof rattle :angry: so I built the low-pro rack you see in the pic. No more rattles now!


And op price versus utility the more think about it the bumper is the winner. Maybe if you still want a roof rack you could build one I think I have like a total of $70 into the one I built. I mean it is a flat rack but still it wouldnt be too bad to add a basket. Maybe build a flat rack and buy a rola to put on top of it :notsure:
