Bajarack or rear bumper w/swingout

Haha yeah i guess, i really like the tent though its great to be able to just stop and unfold the tent and be enjoying a cold in like 5 minutes lol.







How do you have yours mounted, it looks good! I had been using thule feet but the pressure points they caused made the roof rattle :angry: so I built the low-pro rack you see in the pic. No more rattles now
And op price versus utility the more think about it the bumper is the winner. Maybe if you still want a roof rack you could build one I think I have like a total of $70 into the one I built. I mean it is a flat rack but still it wouldnt be too bad to add a basket. Maybe build a flat rack and buy a rola to put on top of it :notsure:

Gotcha I started out with uni strut but didn't like how it mounted or that it took so long to take off I really am digging my new setup though!

Those who have the savage swingout, is it worth the money? How easy was the installation? And would you buy it again?

Yes and yes! Very happy with it.... Great construction, great fit.... Make sure you get all the oil off before you paint... More coats the better. Only thing that I wasn't 100 percent happy with was the license plate light.... A bit cheap... I replaced it with an led one. Amazing quality.

Thanks for the reply man! I think I would need a front bumper if I got a rear one or it would look weird lol I'm just not sold on the tube design yet. I may sound crazy but I really like the design and body lines of the 3rd gen. Sometimes I catch myself looking at the front of it while I smoke a cigar on my porch (true story)and fall in love it with it again!

That's the beauty of building a truck, you never, ever, stop building it.

I have a lot to say on the topic here, I've had both and I STILL have both. I carry TWO spares, one on the roof, and one on the swing out. For most people the swing out makes the most sense for all the reasons others here have stated. Getting the spare onto the roof is very hard. I can get it down by myself though. Truth is, I can't get my 35 on to the swing out by myself either. The fold down tailgate on my cruiser gives me an advantage on the roof top, something 3rd Gens can't benefit from.
When I do build my runner, I'll use a swing out, but I will have a roof rack too. I don't think I'll mount the tire up there though, I'm getting old.

I will give some props to my BajaRack. I needed it for the long trips to New Mexico and Colorado. Carrying 2 large dogs and some gear inside i was just in need of storage space. I got the full length rack and would buy it all over again. There are some other racks available, Watson Metalworks would be my next selection, (I would recommend the full length on what ever you get). I carried the tire inside my rig for a while (check out my build thread), but when i got the ARB fridge the tire went on top. It wasnt much of a struggle to get it on top until i put the 1.5" BL on. FWIW i just ordered the CBI hyprid bumper and swing-out. :banana:

If I had it to do all over again, I will still by the rack first due to the fact of the long trips and needing a place to store gear and couldnt do that on a bumper. But that's what i needed. If you are not in the need of the storage grab the bumper and swing out first, getting that wheel and tire situated is important.

You can fit a worn down 285 under the truck in the stock spare location. Not the sexiest, but if you have a trailer hitch then the fatter tire doesn't ruin departure angle. Not sure about a new 285, maybe if it was aired down.

If I was picking one or the other for the sake of a spare tire, I'd go CBI. So sexy. Although some people had issues with movement of the tire on the swingout...

Thanks man. It worked great for getting the spare around and making some good space to secure some items. But since I added the fridge i went to a bit of a different set up (still in the works). The boxes went into my wife's 4runner and the deck is sitting in the scrap heap in the garage.
