Best lift option for 285/70r17 tires

I've been doing a lot of research about lift kits for the 3rd gen 4runner. There is so much info out there that it makes it a little difficult narrowing down my options. I hate to add another thread about this topic but maybe you can help an older feller out here.

I need a lift that will clear 285/70r17 tires comfortably but not have too much fender space. This is my DAILY driver, therefore, riding comfort is paramount. Honestly, I might take this off road less than 5% of the time so I don't need any super exotic King suspension with reservoirs.

I'd like to get 3" of lift that can support a 80lb subwoofer box. I want my geometry in my suspension at OEM as possible.

I read I'll need a transfer case lowering bracket.

I'd like to change out most of my bushings to the Energy Suspension brand. If anyone has any insight about that including part #'s I'd appreciate it.

Lastly, budget isn't a huge concern so I don't really want to buy any used LC parts like I've read on here.

I'm thinking the OME 3" lift with Bilstein 5100's all around. Throw in new OEM LBJ's and replace most of the bushings (tie rod, steering, pan bar) to Energy Suspension.

In my humble opinion, the OME 3 inch lift with Bilsteins would probably be a good option for what you want. I'm running the Tundra Bilstein 5100's in the front with the Toytec/Eibach springs and I like the way it rides. However, if you want to keep suspension geometry close to stock I'd definitely recommend an aftermarket Upper Control Arm to dial in the alignment better.

For the rear, the OME 890's will provide a 3 inch lift and carry a subwoofer box just fine. I've got two 12's in the back and my ride has always been level.

To add on to keeping suspension geometry, I'd recommend a panhard bar drop bracket in the rear to get the panhard bar back to level. And the transfer case lowering bracket would be a good idea in the front as well. All of these items will help get the ride as smooth as possible.

I'd recommend front king/fox 2.0's, 600lb springs, nothing fancy, they ride a whole lot better than 5100's though. Rears fox 2.0 shocks with OME 890's. Tire pressure will effect your ride a lot with the stiffness of the 285's. 35 psi is the max I'd run.

I went through the same debate deciding on which lift I wanted to buy to fit 33's. If budget isn't a concern, go ahead and get a set of icon/king/fox/ads coilovers, whatever you color/brand you like the best, you won't be disappointed. OME 890's in the rear will give you about 3" of lift and will ride good. As said in the post before get some decent shocks for the rear too, icon/fox make a bolt on 2.0 shock that will fit, and will work fine for daily driving.

I'd also get a set of adjustable control arms for the front, it will help your alignment, and keep your front end in OEM spec. SPC (light racing) upper control arms are about $450 on sale and lots of people run them who daily drive their T4R.

Also if you're doing the lift, i'd recommend lbj's, OTRE, ITRE, and sway bar bushings, and the Panhard drop bracket that is sold in the for sale section. It will make the truck feel new again.

For reference I have a set of Icon front coilover's (non reservoir), icon control arms, 890's and icon rear shocks. I have 285/75/16's but its the same size as you're looking at. It sits about 1" higher in the rear, but I think the 3rd gens look good with a little rake.

It’s my daily driver.. my Runner drives better now then it used to.. I’ll have pics this week. I love the setup.

If you are not worried about off roading and are looking for comfort, an OME complete lift for under $900 would be a good choice and instead of 285s get 265-70/17 tires unless you are dead set on going 285s
If you are going 285s you will need wheel spacers as well.

You can fit 285's without wheel spacers (that's what I run), it just depends on the specs wheel, and getting control arms helps with the extra caster. You could also consider 255/80/17's instead of 285's. They're a hair taller (a true 33), but a good bit narrower. Not sure on what tires you're looking to get but there are a few choices in the 255 range.

I went with the Toytec/Bilstein 3" lift from Toytec. Pretty affordable and gives a good ride. Clears my 285/70r17 Duratracs which only rub when rear driver tire is fully stuffed.

Bilstein 5100 rear shocks (24-249966)
OME coil springs - rear (2906)

Falken AT3W 285-70R17's. I don't do much off-roading but this set-up suits me just fine. As you can see, this is a limited. The left front tire rubs the fender flare just a little. Rides great. I love the tires, too. No road noise. Hope this helps with you decision making.

I'm thinking of the same exact setup. What setting are you on for the 6112 front coilovers and are you using any rear trim packers? Tia

I used the highest setting, as suggested by Chas. Installed the rear springs and shocks and nothing else. Rides really good. The drivers front tire rubs a little when turning right but nothing to worry about. Good luck. I just bought another 4runner. 2000 SR5 with 189,000 miles. Great shape, no rust and the body is nearly perfect. I am going to order the same lift components.

I did not. I had them sent straight to the shop. Didn't have time to take on the install. I will have them do it this time, however. I gonna try to tackle this install myself. Good luck.

I jusr picked up a 2000 with the Sonoran 1.2 kit a 2” body lift (not usually a fan of that) and 285/70/17. Only driven it once since I got it because it needed both wheel bearings replaced but even then the ride quality was really nice.
