Best speculation of a 2023 6th generation I have seen

I share the disappointment with the less that ideal angles but its better than the GX460 and probably not an issue with the typical Lexus buyer. Those that may get one to use as God would want us to will need to modify it anyways – no different than when the 5th Gen 4R came out and we had to wait for the aftermarket to catch up. My initial thoughts went right to what kind of winch bumper would work and where the hell to put a second battery and compressor. There’s supposed to be a PLUS version of the Overtrail but that may just include more luxury gadgets.

Still looks like very solid and legit bones to start thinking about.

I don't disagree with you that the majority of Lexus buyers will have no issues with the approach and departure angles and it's definitely an improvement from the current GX460 like you said.

My issue is that Lexus previously never marketed the GX460 really as an offroad/life-style vehicle and typically it didn't get into that use case until it's 2nd, 3rd or even 4th owner I think.

To me the Overtrail is a missed opportunity since loading equipment like those lockers and KDSS onto it with such abysmal angles out of the box just seems off to me.

Yes, most of the people who can afford one of these probably can afford a couple steel bumpers. That doesn't mean that I want to have to start cutting up my brand new $80K+ truck though just so I can take it on a trail rated higher than beginner.

I never followed Lexus marketing that closely so will take your point but it seems to me that many / most average fans of the GX bought them because of reliability and then the knowledge that it’s rugged and capable. Expect their marketing campaign to reinforce both.

As said before, to 99% “off road” means mild dirt. Not a judgement - just an observation. For us few who have built our 4Rs to meet its capabilities, this new GX is a lot closer to where we want to be than our 4Runner was.

But yes, it would be nice if they also offered a true GXOR trim line closer to that concept build a couple of years ago. I don’t think they will but they definitely got us much closer.

I like the styling of the base GX, i think its a huge improvement over the previous.

I'm just wondering about the positioning of the Prado/4Runner.

I'm thinking if the Prado is the Toyota version of the GX with similar dimensions and true off road capabilities, what do they do with the powertrain? Turbo4?

If the Prado/4runner both come in smaller, then maybe the Prado gets the 6 and the 4Runner the turbo4?

I just don't see how they slot these 2 and the Prado is next, so it will be interesting.

I think the MPG is ridiculous. geez just bring back my v8 4runner.

I think the new GX will be the same overall size as the new Land Cruiser for the US. TFL said their source said the LC will get the 2.4 turbo hybrid. This doesn't mean it will be the only option. Maybe there will be two variants of the LC. One with the 3.44 tt and the other with the 2.4 turbo hybrid. Since the Tacoma TRD Pro is getting the hybrid maybe the off-road version of the LC gets the hybrid and the sportier LC gets the V6. The 4R will most likely get the 2.4 turbo in lower trims and 2.4 turbo hybrid. This gives a laddered approach to powertrains.
2.4 turbo - 2.4 turbo hybrid = 4R
2.4 turbo hybrid - 3.44 tt = LC
3.44 tt - 3.44 tt hybrid = GX

The room in the GX with those second row seats removed looks impressive. There is a small storage compartment under the rear floor that could be stripped out and offer a completely flat floor for turning it into a camping/overlander. If the LC gets the hybrid option the battery placement will be an issue for this purpose.

I'm impressed by the new GX, bold styling for conservative Toyota, good for them, I like it. I'm disappointed in the poor mpg and the 83" width (with or without mirrors, the fender flares are the widest part of the vehicle), wider than the Tundra or Sequoia.

Up until now I think we have assumed the Prado, GX and Land Cruiser would be generally the same size but with different exterior sheet metal. However, if that holds true, that the exterior size is the same, I can't see how the Land Cruiser is supposed to compete with the Bronco or Jeep? It would be too wide to compete on narrow trails and too long to compete on breakover angle. What are your guys' thoughts?

Reference:
New GX/Prado/LC (if it turns out they are the same, tbd)

I have only heard it's 9 inches wider than the previous GX. I can't imagine it's wider than a Tundra. Maybe some miscommunication from Lexus.

My big question is will the 3.44 tt that is made in Japan be more reliable than the engine that is made in NS and put in the Tundra.

Yup, the GX is the wide load:

The GX is getting the 2.4 turbo hybrid. The HP and torque are almost the same. Very odd.

Earth colour only available on Overtrail trim.

I really hope the 6th gen 4Runner doesn't end up as wide as this GX. Thing's wide, I have no interest in offroading full-width stuff. The 5th gen's width took some getting used to for me.

Agreed, the 83" width (with or without mirrors, the fender flares are the widest part of the vehicle) really is hard to understand for an off-roader, hopefully this is because it is the Lexus version and the Land Cruiser comes in more in line with the Bronco or Jeep. Below are some line photos I made for the width at the mirrors and fender flares as well as a good photo from Lexus of the frame and body width.

2024 Lexus TX: Three Luxurious Rows and a 406-HP Plug-In Hybrid Are you sure the GX is getting the 2.4 turbo hybrid? Since the tx550h get a 3.5 V6 for engine and the GX hybrid might as well be a 550h the same set up could be possible.

I'm gonna say it. That Lexus Texas looks horrible. I like the Grand Highlander way better. I think it looks pretty good.

Getting shades of the previous Infinity QX60/Nissan Pathfinder where they were literally the same car with a different badge on the front. Although neither of those looked good. Not much justifying the change in price tag until you get way up in the top trim Texas.

You know, my initial impression of the TX was quite good, but once I saw more pictures of it (and the interior), I tend to agree that it will be hard to justify the cost of one of these over a Grand Highlander in the top trims. I'm perplexed about the F Sport Performance trims and if they will drive better than a Grand Highlander with the Hybridmax powertrain, but other than that I don't see the point of spending the likely $15K or more premium for this vehicle over a similarly equipped Grand. The standard power train in the 350 is also going to be pretty anemic when you consider what motivates a lot of the similar sized 3-row competition (like the BMW X7 which is a rocket ship but also costs $80K+).

I do plan on seriously looking at both of these though in the next year as we look for a (larger) replacement for our Land Rover coming off warranty (like the car, but feel like it will quickly turn into a time bomb).

Right. At least with the X7 you are getting your money's worth. Incredible luxury, powerful base engine, respectable interior space not much smaller than the TX, and, most importantly, your statement piece. That justifies your extra 15-20k above a top tier TX. The TX is unrecognizable next to a Subaru Ascent for probably $75k
