I came to post a similar link. It appears as though one of the NYPD agents was more involved at the scene of the beating than he initially admitted to and took part in kicking and punching the vehicle at a minimum.

Someone needs to tell the bikers to keep their mouths shut. Doing interviews like this does not help their cause. If they seriously think any rational human is going to believe that they were somehow doing everyone else on the road a favor by trying to get this one car to slow down and act responsibly, they're crazy.

The fact that they were dumb enough to post the videos of their stupidity online, means that they are also stupid enough to incriminate themselves further by talking about it.

I had to laugh at the genius giving the double-finger-salute in court. The phrase "Too stupid for his own good", comes to mind.

At least stupid criminals are easy to identify.

-have large soft drinks
-assemble peacefully
-carry weapons, or really own any weapons unless you're the ruling elite or have His blessing
-jaywalk
-drive a Zipcar
-have salt at your table

But it's legal for

-undercover police officers to savagely beat the innocent
-undercover police officers to watch and do nothing
-terrorize the highway while riding recklessly on motorcycles
-cops to open fire on bystanders

I'd call it a Police state, but if it were a Police state, these thugs would be a grease stain on the windshield of Max Rokatansky's Interceptor. It's more of a totalitarian regime run by PC thugs.

The mentality amongst "warrior cops" is that everyone, from the speeding teenager to the jaywalker is the same kind of scumbag as a gun wielding drug dealer. They've lost the ability to tell the difference, or realize that they're supposed to PROTECT the public. If the cops are going to go all Gaza Strip/IDF, then at least they need to learn to shoot better.

NYPD has one of the highest rates of corruption in the country. New York police have a reputation for brutality against citizens that is miles wide. They've gotten better in recent years, and I hope they continue that trend and clean their act up, but your disingenuous defense of the entire department is unwarranted. They deserve to be bashed.

It's equally moronic to think it's widespread. There are MILLIONS of police officers who do things the right way, every shift, every day. But that doesn't make a good headline, so all you hear about are the bad ones. And there are bad cops, just like there are bad people.

Before you criticize everyone for the actions of a few, try spending your career in a gigantic spotlight, with the entire country second-guessing everything you do, not to mention a good number of people who simply hate your entire profession and will do or say anything to rake you over the coals.

Shooting at someone while jacked up on adrenaline, when you were having coffee and thinking about something completely unrelated 30 seconds ago, and trying to think if what you're doing is correct procedure...while simultaneously wondering - in the back of your mind - if you're going to get sued when all is said and done - is a lot different than a fun day at the range with your collection of big-boy toys.

What officers ever intentionally "open(ed) fire on bystanders?"

From the over-dramatization of your earlier post, it sounds to me like you either have issues with authority or have been on the wrong side of the law a time or two.

Your profession REQUIRES that you do things the correct way - both on and off duty. BECAUSE you are a cop during the daytime, you should hold yourself to a higher order at night as well. But it's an unfortunate fact that the NYPD is plagued by misconduct and corruption, and calling the department in general a bunch of Fascist bastards is only a slight exaggeration.

When you have 35,000 officers, then yeah - you will have "one of the highest corruption rates" in the country.

I don't disagree with you - the entire Northeastern US has some issues that the rest of the country doesn't seem to have. And a lot of that has been handed down from previous generations.

That said, it's still not even a majority of officers who have these problems from what I've seen (and I've worked with them), so I'd hardly bag on the entire department as being "corrupt."

I was a paramedic, I've been shot at and assaiulted for doing my job, and I'm fully aware of the brotherhood and "us or them mentality."

I have also worked closely with many cops, some from the moment they come out of the academy and have observed nice people transformed into thinking that every person breaking the law is the same kind of scumbag. I know well enough that even during a traffic stop a hopped up cop might taze or shoot your ass because an innocent action may be misinterpreted as aggression.

It's not ALL police. It's the few bad apples. But there's more of an attitude to cover for them because everyone's afraid that if they let the bad cops take the hit, it makes everyone more vulnerable by tying their hands as what they can legally do.

I just don't understand how any implication that there MAY be police corruption is met by "how dare you insult a veteran cop."

Um...most people were not aware of this when they entered the profession 20 or (in some places) even 10 years ago.

I'm not "crying" about squat. I'm explaining something to a Monday-morning quarterback who has not walked in someone's shoes, but thinks he has the experience/knowledge/credibility to criticize the way in which they walk...

Thanks for the ethics lesson, but I DO hold myself to a higher standard and always have. The vast majority of the cops I've interacted with do the same. But I'll be sure to pass on your sage advice, nevertheless.

I don't need, want, nor am I asking for any sympathy from you. I just think a person should have some kind of ground to stand on before they start making proclamations about things of which they obviously have no clue.

I hear you. Like I said, I think there are certainly problems. A big one - to me - is the sense of entitlement among most NE law enforcement agencies that doesn't exist anywhere else. Not sure why.

Personally, I think when you have an agency that big (and a population that big) in an area that small, it leads issues. Add in what their starting pay is when compared to the general populace in NYC and the problems they have getting good officers and there are going to be more issues.

These are not excuses - they're just some of the reasons I think the issues exist. I also think that there are enough good men and women there, risking their lives day in and day out, that they shouldn't have to be denigrated by people who don't know what these officers have to do from day to day.
