Curious, why would you spend thousands on a nice 4runner then rattle can the wheels instead of getting them powder coated? Just wondering.

Here is his answer to your question (Post #18):

Yeah I really did think of powdercoating, but there are 3 reasons that I decided to do it myself rather than getting them PCed.

1) Cheaper

2) I was not sure if black wheels would look good on my truck, so why waste that money on powdercoating.

3) The biggest advantage many point out in powdercoating is the strength of the paint, but I figure my wheels will get damaged, and the sort of scratches I will get (from off roading) are just as likely to occur on powdercoated wheels than my rattle canned wheels. Plus mine would be far easier to fix

awesome look. i just got my fj rims on last week. unfortunately dont have the time to paint all mine. but i was thinking of plasti-dipping the emblems on them for a little contrast. do the emblems pop right off the centercaps?

Yup! They pop right off

I am happy I did rattle can instead of powdercoat, I have touched these up a few times after some technical/rocky trails.

I painted my 03 Tacoma's wheels with Rust-0-leum Metallic black has a satin finish. Took 2 cans , but I only did the outside.

they sit pretty flush. i got them to avoid spacers. i think they are like having .5" spacers. btw in case anyone is wondering, after wheeling multiple times in the snow with these tires, they kick ass!!! Kumho AT51, like KO2 on steroids.

Thanks for the reply. That set up looks sweet! What size tires are you running. I’m thinking about going with a 255/75/17.

I currently have Black FJ trail teams on it now that I would like to put on my 2nd gen Tacoma. So I’m looking at options to replace those on the 4runner.
