Blackstone UOA

Just changed my oil at 20k and it was my first 10k OCI. I did the first change at 5k and the second at 10k. Anyway, I sent a sample off to Blackstone for analysis. They noted that copper and silicon were elevated. TBN was at 1.8 so the oil still had some life left in it. I used the Toyota 0W-20 for this OCI.

Blackstone's comments: "Your engine is pretty new yet (and it looks like you've been running pretty long oil runs already), so
we're not too concerned about the elevated copper and readings that turned up here. Copper could just be
some residual wear-in stuff that hasn't washed out of the engine yet, and maybe silicon is from factory
sealers. Because other elements look fine, we doubt either element warrants any attention at this point.
Averages are based on 5,200 miles on the oil. The TBN of 1.8 shows some active additive left (1.0 is low).
Check back for improvements next time."

I'll post the actual element numbers later today if anyone is interested. All in all I'd say they look decent for a 10k OCI. Probably will post this over at Bob is the oil guy to get their feedback.

Synthentic? (I always use synthetic so I don't even know if you can run regular oil in the 4runner... :| )

Very good! Thanks for the numbers as this should probably change a few minds (probably not though) on trusting the 10K synthetic interval. One question: What was the time interval between 10 and 20K? That will have some bearing on analysis but probably not much. I am a firm believer in 10K changes unless most of that 10K was spent towing or off road.

Toyota 0W-20 is a synthetic oil. Not sure if you can get a non-synthetic 0W-antyhing oil.

The oil was in use for almost 9 months (1/23/11 - 10/9/11).

Yes, changed oil and filter at 5k, 10k and now at 20k.

Are all synthetics created equal?

Is Toyota oil pure synthetic or a synthetic blend? I'm not sure if all synthetics are created equal, but I have a friend who's a BMW mechanic who told me he tore down an engine from a X5 (using pure synthetic) that had gone 30k miles without an oil change. He said the internals looked brand new. I'm not saying 30k is a good idea....just a testimony regarding synthetic oil.
