borla cat-back system installed

Seems like all the aftermarket catbacks use 2.5 inch pipes. Isn't that the same as stock? So what's the point with upgrading? Am I missing something? Why not just change the muffler? I guarantee you that mandrel bent BS makes very little difference if any. 1engineer,what's your take?

Changing muffler to a less constrictive one would accomplish the same thing.

I have to laugh a little at the claims of "more power" after installing a same-size-pipe cat back exhaust, and again with a CAI.

To be sure, you might gain 1-3 hp, depending on components. With that said, the "perceived" power gain of the operator is much greater. What I mean by that is with the additional noise comes the feeling to "punch it" to hear that new noise. By doing this you are revving the engine into it's high torque RPM range and quite simply, feeling the existing power. Operators now want to go to that range because it sounds "cool." I would have to say with most people they would estimate they gained 50+hp due to the sound and they way they are driving now vs. with the OEM components. To each their own and if they think they have more power then that is what is important to them.

Which is why I waited to make my decision. I'm just swapping out the muffler and intake filter element purely for an increase in audible performance. Although not as expensive, I'm still spending more money on mods.

CAttacks worth it?

Thanks 1engineer. Not saying I won't do it but I want to be realistic in my expectations. Seems like 4runner is very bad for my compulsive behavior. I've had some cool cars in my lifetime but nothing that puts a smile on my face everyday like the runner. Kind of scary. I feel like a high schooler again. Thanks Toyota!
