Building the Black Pearl...

Are you sure the rear main is leaking? IE, is their oil on the ground? I'm not a fan of any M1 30w oil (their XW-40 is good though) from my Subaru days. The stuff breaks down very quickly, is known for consumption on turbo motors, and has a fairly low viscosity for a 30W even when brand new. If I were you I'd try changing oil brands next change before assuming something else is wrong. For off the shelf oil I've had good luck with Pennzoil synthetic on "normal" cars (use it on my wifes TSX, my 4Runner, and all my old DD's before I had a work car) and Shell Rotella synthetic on high performance/turbo cars.

I'm going to try to confirm or deny it this weekend. I have used royal purple before in other vehicles, and I may just go back to using that.

So I went out to my 4Runner after work and there was more oil underneath it. Looks like the oil pan had oil slopped all over it. Not thrilled with that, went from having the oil to the full dot on the dipstick, to halfway down. Having only changed the oil maybe 5 days ago, this is frustrating. I just need to figure out where it's all coming from.

None of this was happening before this last oil change.

i own a few vehicles older than 10 years and the first thing i did when i got them was change the fuel filter and fuel pump and check the hoses. thats just my 2c's.:reddance:

Filter has been changed and hoses have been checked. It's oil for sure.

Yep, if it wasn't this bad before maybe try checking the oil filter gasket? With the skid pans the leakage will end up toward the rear of the engine making you think its the rear main....I had the same thing happen to be last year.

You will want to use OEM/Toyota plugs and wires on these trucks. Not to get into a huge debate or anything but just know that for anything "spark related" you will definitely want to go Toyota parts only. Lots and lots of threads can be found where peoples 4Runners are running bad because they put platinum plugs in their 4Runner.

I honestly never thought of that. I will give it a good look this weekend, and make sure it's all good.

gasket/seal?:hiding:

Going to clean it up this weekend, and as suggested check the oil filter gasket first. Then cross my fingers and hope that's the issue. I don't understand why the rear main would all of a sudden just give out after an oil change.

So I did some cleaning up and looking around this weekend. I used some Kleenex Brake Cleaner all the oily parts, frame, and everywhere where there was just grease and oil that needed to come off so I could find where this is/was coming from.

On the upside, I have confirmed the head gaskets are not leaking. I have also confirmed that it is actually not the oil filter gasket either.

I was really hoping for one or the other, because that would be significantly easier than having a rear main seal leak.

Well, now for what I did actually find. While I am still not 100% sure that it is the rear main seal. It could possibly be the seal between the oil pan and the engine itself. Ironically if that is the culprit, it is leaking at the very back by where the engine meets the transmission. it still could possibly be the rear main seal though, as you can see the flat piece on the bell housing where it goes up, and meets the bottom the engine. It was all cleaned off, but it has returned to a slow drip.

I am coming to a crossroads as to whether I want to just sell it to someone who has the time and money to deal with it, or just try to find someone who can replace it properly. Its a great southern vehicle, nothing beyond a little surface rust on the frame. New UCAs, and LBJs, SS 1.2 lift, fuel filter, plugs, wires, radiator, trans cooler, and a brand new set of tires as of Wednesday. Open to yous guys thoughts.

So I got hit with the dreaded P0120 code today. Ordered a new throttle position sensor, and a new a/c button for my 4tunner today.

This build has slowed so much, I'm hoping to get to the TBU this spring/summer, and maybe some armor this fall.

I just ordered everything that I need to do the Tundra Brake Upgrade!!! 13WLs are on their way. Going to flush all the fluid out and put DOT 4 in there too. Its going to be a maintenance day soon!!!!

Doug Thorley Headers

Can anyone tell me how I know whether my headers do or do not have the smog fittings?

So I am about 85% complete with my TBU. I ran into some issues with the line that runs into the caliper. The threads are shot, so I ordered some new metal lines that run into the caliper, I also added my wheelers off-road lines as well. So now all I have left is to put the new lines on, and bleed out all the old DOT 3 for the new DOT 4.

Finished up my TBU today, got the brakes bled, and changed out the DOT 3 for Lucas Oil DOT 4.

I can officially confirm, I don't know if its in the TBU informational thread, that the SR8 wheels will fit over the 13WL.

Oh, and finally got around to putting on the antenna mount from MStudt

Wrapping up 2 mods in one day makes me feel good. Now just to order my Odyssey(not sure if this is spelled right) battery.

I still have some extra pedal travel, so I am going to go ahead and bleed these again this weekend. All in all it seems to be working fine.

So I decided to throw the bumper and skids on the 4Runner. Went with the Shrockworks since the Spring GB is going on.

I need to get the tranny fluid drained and refilled this weekend, and get some new pictures up.

Once my big 3 upgrade gets here from Bumper2Bumper, I will be able to throw the Odyssey battery in with the Ballistic Fabrication battery box.

Lots of excitement to come in the near future for this build.:riddance:

Finally got armor ordered for my rig today, both bumpers and full set of skids from the Shrockworks spring group buy. Still waiting on my big 3 upgrade from Bumper2Bumper Auto so I can install my Odessy battery and ballistic fab battery box. OH THE WAIT!!!!!!!

So I haven't really updated this in a bit, the movement has been slow.

I am still anxiously awaiting my Shrockworks bumpers, and skids. So excited about that.

I had to put an Optima Yellow Top in, since thats all AutoZone had. I AM STILL WAITING on my big 3 wiring upgrade from Bumper2Bumper, so when my battery completely died, and I was sitting on a special order Odyssey battery. So fortunately they exchanged it for me. All because I couldn't install it though....waiting on that wiring upgrade.:frosty:

I need to re-bleed the brakes since they have been kind of soft. Has anyone had any issues with this? I did the 13WL upgrade, and now, I still have good stopping power, but the pedal seems consistently soft. I bled them through at least 2 bottles of DOT4 brake fluid. Am I missing something.

Since it has been too hot to do anything around here lately, the heat index has it at 99 degrees at 11:30, at 60% humidity. So I guess I am going to just go try to scrub my rig down and clean it out. My girlfriend told me two or three days ago that it looks like I drive around with the windows down and collect dust. So its that time to do a little bit of cleaning since I can do it in the garage.

Anybody have any suggestions to a good way to keep it more presentable being an everyday driver?
