Building the Black Pearl...

Are you not able to adjust it now that the panhard bar is bolted up? You should be able to just loosen the jam nuts and use a pipe wrench to adjust it to the length you need. Unless your rod ends are threaded the same direction instead of opposite directions ...

Well the one end of the pan hard bar turns pretty reasonably, the other however.....took me two 14" pipe wrenches to get it to move at all. The other end has been a complete battle. I can adjust it to make it fit....I mean its technically on there right now. But at 37 1/4" its 1 3/4" longer that it is supposed to be....I am way to particular about this kind of thing to know it is off....oh well....I may just use this as an excuse to put the whole axle on jack stands, order some new metal tech rear links and re-connect it all lined up perfectly.....

Back to the real world. I have tried quite a few things and I am just stumped. I do want new rear links though.:wow:

I’m trying to find a stock panhard bar to replace the one I have from Sonoran steel. The ends aren’t very adjustable, and I’m just fed up with it. I’m honestly just considering ordering some aftermarket/autozone/Napa replacement. Anybody have any thoughts on finding one?

Anybody doing a part-out on here should have one available. You don't need to have one to keep the chassis a roller, so it should be easy to find.

So I finally got the Icon rears installed(260,764) and got the panhard bar back under the truck. I have a stock one on the way....I am going to put the stock one in to tighten it up that much more. It feels pretty good to be back driving the 4Runner though. I am still playing with the stiffness of the rear shocks...trying to get it right for daily driving. They will need to settle though....so heres what I got.

Sorry for the lack of updates, and the lack of doing anything with my 4Runner other than driving it to work. I put a new alternator in there 160 amp, and finally added the big 3 upgrade.(261,017). I need to get some time and make some more adjustments on the icons up front. All in all, it’s still an awesome rig to drive.

Does anyone who is running the big 3 upgrade have any issues with like, oh the radio flickering as the turn signal is going of and on?

Oh has anyone modified their Shrockworks bumper? I have learned to HATE, HATE, HATE where the license plate is located. I haven't seen any others who've done it. Just figured I would ask.

I have some mini D2S 3.0's that i need to get put together for the retrofit too.....hopefully that goes better than some of the other mods.

I don't have the big 3 upgrade, but I've had that problem. My solution was to wait and do nothing. It worked great and doesn't happen anymore. It was weird.

A bad circuit board (flex PCB) on the back of the gauge cluster can do some very odd things with electrical system. Mine would sometimes illuminate the reverse lights dimly when the left turn signal was flashing...

So I haven't posted a whole bunch lately. I ran down my "issue" with the big 3, wasn't an issue with the big 3, I just had a loose wire. I turned 270,000 miles on the 3rd of January. Unfortunately I have grown out of a use for this, and need to let it go. I will not be leaving the forum, but you may not see me around the 3rd Gen section so much.

So today was the day. I watched the 4Runner drive off. It went to a good home, a forum member who will give it the adventures it deserves. I am looking for another Toyota to fit my needs a little better. I’ll be around, thanks to everyone for the help.

Hey guys! So I had the pleasure of picking up Jstim's rig from him yesterday! I love her already and Jstim was awesome throughout the purchase process of working around my crazy schedule, showing me everything he could on the truck via facetime since I had been burned on a previous deal on a 4runner.

With his permission I will continue this thread with updates on the truck and the adventures my GF and I take her on.

Current plans on working on little things in the interior, and looking into the tundra brake upgrade to see if anyone has found a solution for the semi soft pedal.

I can already tell I am going to have an absolute blast in this rig and I'll be heading to a couple off road spots here in Tennessee soon!

Rear shocks question

I have a question about your rear Icon CDCV remote res rear shocks if you don’t mind.

(Tried to send you a PM but the site says you are not accepting? Figured I would just put the question in your thread as the information may be useful to others scratching their heads over the same thing.

I have already ordered and received the Icon CDCV remote res front coilovers and have the OME 2861’s.

As to the rears – I phoned Icon technical support and spoke with one of their engineers and she confirmed that their stock rears for the 3rd gens are in fact only able to add 2” of lift as opposed to the fronts going to 3”. She advised that the reason was they (Icon) do not like the 1” front to rear rake and designed their stock pairing to level out the suspension.

I personally want the rake as I will have enough weight in the back to bring this down a bit most of the time, particularly on long camping trips.
Bandit Runner was asking the same question:

“Nice setup! I'm thinking of going with Icons and 861's also. What rear shocks did you get? The Icon 3rd gen 4Runner rear shocks say they are only for 0-2" of lift. You'll have a lot more lift in the rear than that with the 861's. Did you have custom length shocks made?”

JerkyDrewster replied

“Sorry to barge in, but I can answer this one! I called Icon about that issue and they told me that their website was incorrect, and those shocks are meant for 0-3" of lift.”

So.. there seems to be some confusion out there.

I am just wondering if you have the model # and specs for the 4th gen version you ordered, and what if any research you were able to find out about the compatibility with 3rd gens.

The Icon engineer told me that I would have to remove my rear shocks, install the springs I wish to use (OME 2861) and then measure between the shock mounting points at full droop and full compression.

From those measurements they would make a custom length rear set.

This seems like a lot of work, work that I am hoping to avoid – I am thinking there must be enough 3rd gens running this exact combination to have already figured out the length required, or a way to mathematically calculate this from known suspension specifications.

Sorry for the long post, thanking you in advance

Gary,

From all the research I did before ordering rear shocks, I finally came to the conclusion that the 4th gen 4Runner or FJCruiser rear shocks have the correct lengths (16" compression and 24.6" extended) for our 3rd gens with the OME 861 coils.

You could go with Icon, King, or ADS rear lift shocks for the 4th gen 4Runner. I went with ADS, and have been very happy.

Good luck.

Bleed, bleed ached bleed again. Also adjust your rear brakes correctly. And if that doesn't work, upgrade your master.
