Cheap ways to get more "go"

Horsepower isn't cheap and the deckplate and a filter is the easiest and cheapest by far and that combo has been proven on a dyno to make 7-9whp which is the exact same as a $200+ K&N Filtercharger makes.
An exhaust (2.25") will help the midrange a bit but it's more of a sound mod than anything else.

Because of sitting in a cubicle all day now, ive been looking on the forums a lot. As a result, the other day after work, my buddy and I did the deckplate mod to my car. I only found a white deck plate but painted it black, and i added the screen which i think helps keep a LOT of stuff out. I notice a huge difference in sound and pickup. I also tightened the throttle cable which helped with pick up too. However, my gas milage has been destroyed. I attribute that to "mmm more power and it sounds so good so i'll floor it all the time now" but once im done flooring it all the time, i know the mpg will be better than before. I also ordered the amsoil drop-in through boaz so when i get that it should improve even more. The next thing im thinking about doing is a borla/trd exhaust but i kinda like having my t4r be decently quiet at lower rpms and throaty around mid to high rpms. If i really had money and really wanted a super fast t4r id do what i saw some guy on cardomain do...add a supercharger, nitrous, exhaust, etc. That thing is FAST.
I've been researching last night and came up with a question about the deckplate mod.
If I live in an area that's pretty much clean aired and rarely rains, would it be ok to just drill out a hole in the airbox and not install the deckplate?
Also, is it ok to do the deckplate mod with the stock filter, or do I have to order something like the Amsoil ?

well the advantages to deckplate vs hole are pretty good. first off, i think i read that most people screw the deck plate back on in the winter and when they go offroading. If im correct, your t4r is 2wd so i dont think you'll be offroading and therefore, not a problem. The reason i chose to put in a deckplate as opposed to a hole are as follows:
1) Other people have done it and therefore I felt safe doing it.
2) if i messed up or didnt like the results of putting a hole in my airbox, I could simply screw the deckplate on and its back to stock performance.
3) I really liked the screen idea (take the tube clamp and a piece of screen and clamp it to the part of the deckplate that sticks into the box. Theoretically you could simply take some silicone and glue it to the inside of the box but im disregarding that)
4) Its like the reason i bought a crappy little toolkit from advance autoparts and the same reason you buy insurance: in case shit happens. You might not see a use for it now, but its better to have it and never need it than to need it and not have it. One of my friends' old car died because the intake he had sucked up too much water. You might not need it for water now but what if you did and didnt have the deckplate to screw on and it resulted in you needing a new car?
5) saying you did "the deckplate mod" sounds a lot cooler than "i cut a hole in my airbox"
I might even screw my deckplate back on for a little to see the difference and to keep my from wasting gas by flooring it all the time to hear the results.

you dont have to do anything. It would be a good idea to take out the fuse and replace it i believe (basically all i know is that doing that is supposed to make the car "stupid" and thus relearn how to accelerate according to the way everything is working, thus when you change things, you should do it) I'm using my stock filter right now and notice a difference especially in sound but im getting the amsoil filter because replacing the filter adds to the benefits of the mod. The deckplate mod allows more airflow into the box but the air still has to go through the filter. Therefore, most people who do the deckplate mod also replace the stock filter with an aftermarket, high airflow drop-in filter. The filter a lot of people use is made by Amsoil and i just got one for $31 and change from t4r member Boaz (check the performance products forum, he has a thread). Swapping the filter allows more air to go through the filter, therefore not replacing it would result in less air going through. The deckplate allows more into the box, the new filter allows more of that additional air to pass through the filter into the engine and kaboom, more power.

When I did my airbox I also put an initial filter screen over the hole since it's definetly will keep out the bigger crap like bugs and leaves and even small animals that might find your airbox a nice place to spend the night.
As far as 4th gens go I'm not sure if this mod is possible but I'll do some checking if the answer isn't on this board.

I went to Boats US. Basically go to any boating/marine store. You could also order it offline.
Btw. I got my amsoil filter today and i wasnt expecting it to do that much of a noticable difference having already done the deckplate mod but its amazing...Also got my t4r.org stickers and put em on, i'll take pics when i stop getting reflections and possibly after i wash my baby.

I've heard of a bunch of people adding the TBS (Throttle Body Spacer) to their t4rs but ive also heard that it doesnt do anything and i think i might have also heard it can decrease power. If you haven't swapped in an amsoil drop-in air filter, id do that before you do the TBS. Also consider the deckplate mod. I've done the deckplate and put in an amsoil filter, I LOVE the difference it makes. Sounds louder above 3k rmp and definately feel a power increase (thrown back in my seat a lot mroe, kinda feels like having the ect on without the mod in my opinion, but also sounds awesome.) the amsoil drop-in combined with the deckplate mod has been dyno proven for 7-9 hp gain. It also increases gas milage (havent seen it yet but im still enjoying my ability to go fast and sound nice so i just floor it a lot, when i stop flooring it all the time, gas will get better. flooring it a lot now gives me about the same mpg i had before the mods

AMSOil blocks more dirt plus it is about $35.00 instead of 60. for the K&N filter. Check out the AMSOil site they have more info and a chart on the the site.
