COB's 4Runner Timeline (Pic Heavy)

You are my hero.

Your truck is seriously amazing. :first:

Hey I am most likely doing a 4x conversion to a 97 2x from an '00/'01 4x. I was wondering if you could maybe help me out by answering a few questions...

I'll be using the (auto) transmission (you are next level doing the 5-speed conversion)/shifters/transfer case/front diff/axles/hubs and wiring harness from the '00. :hungry:

Did you need the rear diff and rear hubs from the donor?
Are there any parts not listed I would need?
Is there anything I should be worried about fitting?
What did you do with the donor once you were done with it?

How much did you get your donor for? I am paying $1k.

Also I am wondering if I could maybe come back to you for more questions, I saw you are in Mission Viejo, I am going to do the swap in San Juan.

Thanks!

Yeah. Got most of my switches. Wiring is a pain though. Pretty sure I'm going to have to continue using the stock hazard since Toyota did some weird stuff with that that I don't understand. Gauges are pretty much finished as are most of the interior lighting. I'm struggling with getting that clock red though. Every red filter I use is too dark during the day time. The only explanation I can think of is that the face of the clocks is thicker on the second gens than it is in the thirds.

I had the same problem with the red clock at first. The key is to use a light red, almost orange color. It is a little dark during the day still.

3.0 is currently in the works. Original plans went out the window but it'll hopefully get finished soon. My main concern now is just getting it done right and getting it all working properly. Problem is the deeper I dig into it the less I'm liking what I'm seeing. The engine was clearly mistreated by previous owners. And as much as I want to fix all these problems, I just don't have the funds to get all the things it needs unfortunately.

That sucks to hear man. I fully understand, my 89 Supra was much of the same. Took two years to get that rebuilt, but the waiting is worth it for a properly finished product. I'm sure you'll find just the right time. If the 3.0 doesn't work out, you can find 3.4's for roughly 800 in good used condition. 5VZ Head cracks are really common despite their good reputation, anything less than $800 would have me worried.

Amongst other problems I've got my intake layered in oil, missing bolts, and all the injector plugs are busted. I know its go na get worse the further into this I get.

New injector plugs are available online for less than $10 a piece. Make a trip out to the junkyard and they're similar on most Toyotas. Hell, next time I'm there, I'll grab you some.

Not gonna lie, kinda want to see this video haha. Glad you and your buddy are alright

Not going to bother posting it. Mostly just a bunch of arguing. I didn't start recording until after the first part of the physical contact, which would have been moderately postworthy.

He looks like that guy from the american top gear, he seemed so cool on the show...

If only it was him! I'd be rich $$$. This must be his older, fatter lookalike

I can't believe people are acting like such idiots in your neighborhood man. That is way too nice an area for such hotheads. A physical altercation is much more serious crime than a noise violation.

Thankfully this did not happen anywhere near MV. It happened in Garbage Grove. I'd be pissed if I lived there, too. Sucks for my friend who has to live a few doors down, though.

Beautiful truck and you just laidout how i want my build thread!

Sweet! Thanks! The whole link thing in the beginning exceeded the allowable amount of characters in a post, so it might help if you make a few extra blank posts for your own use later on.

Wow, if someone tried that down here in the south that'd be a good way to get a gun pulled on them. Glad the cops took him away, sounds like he's a crazy and needs to get locked up.

My friend, the victim, is a security guard and plans to become an LEO. He's applied for his CCW since this incident.

You can get this paint on Amazon now.
And for much cheaper than in store :D

Very clean build, just went through all 90 pages.

Looking forward to more photos and updates. Give my build a look.

Thanks truedef :) 2WD rig I see! Unbelievable job cleaning that interior, holy crap! Looks amazing! I like the impressive work you've done on electrical and getting that trans temp sender unit fabbed up. Nice job!

It is a very nice build indeed. Inspiring!! Can't wait to start my build thread 97 limited 3.4 4x2

Thanks toolbox, 2WD 4Runners need love too, good luck with your build!

Wow nice build.

:thumb: Thanks slofizz

Wow sorry I didn't get back to you sooner! How's the conversion going, or is it done?

If you haven't found your answers by now, the rear axle and diff are entirely identical between 2WD and 4WD.

There were lots of odds and ends, to list each individual part is beyond my ability.

My only concern with using an 01 is the compatibility of the wiring harness. Mine was 99 to 00 so the parts were largely the same. For a 97, I would want a 96-98, but that's just me. It can probably be made to work.

I parted out the donor truck for a profit. It took a long time, but I got the money back and ended up with a boatload of other parts for my rig, such as seats. Still have plenty of parts laying around, and it's a good thing, too. One day, the 99 was broken into, had an extra window laying around at home. Gotta love the little perks.

I paid nearly 3k for my first donor truck. It was not a very good price at all, but finding a manual 4Runner was not easy. I just got the first one I found, and I got into a bidding war with another buyer.

I should give you my phone number because I don't give much attention to the forum anymore.

Truck is looking good man - hope you're doing well.

Thanks Weston, hope you're enjoying being back into your 4Runner groove.

THIS UPDATE BROUGHT TO YOU BY SUPRA TURBO

Finally got my plates in! The COBwagen (yep, E! Like VW)
26889966636_f4ee11f5ae_b.jpg

When this truck got new upper and lower ball joints, I removed the upper control arms and installed another set from a Tacoma. The Tacoma arms had about 60k miles on them, so the bushings were still good.

The bushings in the arms from the 4Runner, with 235k on them, didn't look so good... the center sleeves came out by hand.
26855192001_206de587e4_b.jpg

Took down the edge of the bushing with a grinder.
26922608605_c7429a8f83_b.jpg

Bushing out of the arm... Damn!
26855191881_0cbabf4c98_b.jpg

The lower control arms have never been removed, so they are pretty much guaranteed destroyed by now. There was so much play in the arms that it was definitely time for new ones. Went with some new Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings.

Installed in the upper arms.

Time for the lowers.
26922606835_0890571444_b.jpg

Rack unbolted and moved over, the LCA bolts need the space to come out. The rack also uses Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings.
26317469394_c3b3861530_b.jpg

@michaeljtomey paid a visit!
26922667245_53d0872d9c_b.jpg

My hands turned completely black so no more photos for the LCA process. Let me tell you though, getting those metal sleeves out is far easier when you heat up the metal only. Don't sit there trying to torch the rubber because it makes the process 10x longer and more complicated.
26317531744_7a20f35ef4_b.jpg

OH, and the Bilstein 5100 shock bushing on the bottom end was sagging. The press was already being used so the lower shock bushings were rotated 180 degrees.
26649864010_dd51a6b327_b.jpg

And at last, the eccentric washer guides. This is the right front bolt. A few years back at KOH, I was hauling some ass through the lake bed, didn't see a whoop coming up. Didn't have time to slow down and definitely didn't wanna lock up the brakes and end up hitting the whoop sideways. Took the hit and not one alignment shop has managed to be able to get it aligned right since.
26317467294_1a4620db2f_b.jpg

Now that the LCA bolts and washers were out, this was the best time to straighten things out.
26649860730_3bb4afc1f6_b.jpg

Now there's just an alignment left. The truck already feels astronomically better. This LCA bushing job has been a long time coming!

Man reading your replies I though I posted a million times and was really confused than realized you quoted me in sections and felt way better haha. Props to you for taking the time to organize the replies so well.

Yeah I get what your saying with the clocks. My theory is that Toyota made the plastic cover for the third generation clocks thinner than the ones for the second generation ones. That way they can make the clocks dimmer and consume less power. What I ended up doing was picking up a second clock off a junker and will sand the cover down when I have time and see if that helps.

The Supra's looking good. One day we should take out our 80's sports cars out for a spin instead of taking our runners haha

I would love to do a 3.4 swap but there's just so much extra money that you gotta put into it and I just can't do that right now. One day maybe. Right now I just want to get the thing done. Earlier today in fact I broke a cheap breaker bar trying to get my crank bolt loose. Thing is stuck on there tight.

It's funny Rutledge Wood got brought up. A few weeks ago on Top Gear they went up the Rubicon Trail and he picked a 90 4runner. Spoiler alert; he immediately broke it after rolling it and sheering the engine mounts. No blown head gasket though. I feel like if there wasn't an idiot driving that thing would've made it all the way

Love the 4runner man! I've got most of the parts and am about to 4wd swap and start modding my 99. Wanted you to know your build has been a big inspiration! Also, i technically got the trail edition wheels before you! [emoji13]

How much fabrication was in your conversion I'm looking to do one I have to much sentimental value in my very first truck, 99' 4Runner SR5. It also deserves it lol. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Just spent a good hour going through this build thread again...so awesome to see the progress. One question though, how did you route the exhaust out the back with the glass pack? Cause our stock mufflers are offset to center I believe, but the glass pack runs straight through.

That sure looks like some "kustom" wiring coming out from under the hood!
Trickle charger to keep her alive... she's been on life support unfortunately.

Hope you're doing well man, is it fixed yet??

Awesome build!

I live the Shrockworx front and the trailer! Black on green looks cool too.

Hey man, sweet build yourself! That things beautiful, great work.

Thanks for the kind words!

Lots of folks got their wheels before me. I didn't know it was a contest... lol. Thanks dude, good luck with the 4WD swap.

Nice rig. I think I've seen your truck parked off Alicia. I live in Trabuco Canyon.

That's the one! Thank you. I'm pretty sure I've seen yours around because the shrockworks bumper is a spectacle to see on another rig.

Hey Josh, my rig is a base model, so since you'd be starting with an SR5, little fabrication is required as far as I know.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

The black on black on your rig looks great!

Black on black? Eh, close enough, haha. thanks.

Thanks man. The progress was really active until around 2012, the rig hasn't changed a whole lot in the last 5 years. The glasspack was on for a few months and it was just dumped 45degrees down before the axle. It was way too loud.

So about a year and a half ago, I bought a parts rig. Donor truck 3.0

R.I.P. Donor truck 3.0! Thanks for the parts!

The donor rig had a manual transmission and E-locker. The rear axle and wiring is all for my 3rd gen. Gonna get some Yukon 4.56's later on and switch the whole rear axle out.

When I was selling my red 87 4Runner, a bunch of people complained about my high price. I said **** em and kept it. After putting a few grand into it, the truck gets offers all the time, but it's far too late for that. MINE!

This new donor truck donated another manual transmission. I had initially planned to sell the entire manual transmission setup as a swap, but after 6 months of a bunch of cheap-ass 4Runner owners saying that my price was too high, I went the usual route - AKA, keeping it for myself. MINE!

32672862365_3425855387_b.jpg

The transmission in my rig hasn't enjoyed the hell I've put it through for the last 40k,

- the synchros for 2nd and 3rd are shot
- the bearings are all rattling and loud
- the clutch is nearing its end
- The transfer case output bearing for the rear driveshaft was pretty hammered. It has a lot of play, and once you put the truck on the highway, the ride is harsh and creates a bad vibration much like a bad u-joint.
- There was also a leak coming from the seal in the same spot.
- Pilot bearing stuck solid (LCE clutch kits and their cheap-shit pilot bearings)
- The rear main seal also gave way and started to leak.

Rebuilding is an option, and due to the parts required, it's also the more expensive option.

Time to swap.

With the transmission out, the once shiny, lustrous, red pressure plate is not what it used to be. There's barely any clutch material left, she's had it. The pilot bearing is done for. The flywheel has some hot spots, but it will do the job fine.

REST IN PIECES...

New clutch from Marlin Crawler. It uses a SECO clutch disk and AISIN pressure plate. The Marlin kit also contains a Koyo throwout bearing and Nachi pilot bearing, which are among the best for quality and longevity.

Back to new transmission. Here it is with the 5VZ-FE bell removed and getting ready for the 2TR-FE bell housing. Cleaned up the front bearing retainer. Input shaft needs to be shortened.
