COB's 87 4Runner Turbo

I just think it goes well with the color scheme but I agree, black wheels are over done. Hell, red and black is a little over done... I mean both of my cars had that theme when I got them and it bugs me. It's too much work for me to change either of them, especially the Firebird since half the car is literally painted like that. Oh well.

As far as the rig goes I'm sorry to hear bout the clutch cylinder. Hope it wasn't too much to replace. At least you passed smog. How's the whole exemption thing work?

You're right, it does go well. There are some vehicles that it looks perfect with.

The clutch thing wasn't a big problem really. A little annoying, but it still worked when I topped off the fluid and pumped for some pressure.

This build is so cool, amazing to see such a well restored classic

Thank you cantaloop :)

Well, unfortunately, the corner lenses are of such low quality, they turned yellow. They look worse than the clears did, now. The clears will go back on until I find something better.

Boosting anything more than 2 psi in 2nd will cause the clutch to slip. Boosting in any gear 3-5 causes slip before 1PSI.

So, it appears the non-turbo 8-7/8" clutch and flywheel from the blue donor truck are not up to the task. Time to upgrade to the larger and tougher 9-5/16" 22R-TE Turbocharged parts. Luckily, the R151F clutch and flywheel fit the W56 bell housing.

I purchased a new kit from Marlin Crawler. I'll hopefully get it in the truck within the next couple weeks.

So the truck has been sitting a lot lately since the starter is on the fritz. Definitely not the wiring issue as per usual with these trucks, jumping the contacts does nothing. Gotta give the starter a few whacks while someone holds the key to get it started.

Still need to install the marlin clutch and replace the input shaft seal on the W56. That'll be a great time to change the starter since it's coming out anyway.

The other day, I go out to fire it up, let it run a bit, when the damndest thing happened. Heard a pop and saw coolant raining out from under the truck. Immediately shut it off.

I was expecting a blown up radiator hose, but this is what I saw.

WTF...? The water pump literally broke in half. How the hell that happens, I have no idea.

So I bought and installed a brand new AISIN pump from RockAuto for a whopping $30. How cheap was this old pump that they couldn't go OEM? I should have changed it when the motor went in, but this was the last scenario I'd have ever thought of.

Considering going with an electric fan or a new fan clutch/blade just for the idea that maybe a gradual wobble weakened the aluminum and caused the breakage.

Thanks buddy :) How's your clutch treating you so far? My starter took a shit so looks like I've gotta order a new one before the clutch job.

It's awesome! So smooth. I also replaced the slave and master cylinders with new Aisins. The only problem was the LUK flywheel I got was a POS. Wound up having to take it all out and put my OEM one that I got resurfaced back in.

Finally got caught up after on-and-off reading of this thread....

Clean red turbo 4runner with manual conversion is pretty tough to beat...

Did you get it back on the road?

That's a new one for me. Glad it happened when you weren't going anywhere.

Same! That would not have been a good time! I was just about to take off, too!

What the hell? Haha

Right? I couldn't even find anything on google of that happening.

Awesome that you've got it working great, still happy? I'm gonna go over that LUK flywheel with a fine tooth comb, my stocker is too small.

I still haven't installed mine yet :( Too many projects!

How did you like it? I sure love the turbo aspect, it was what sold me on it. You'd be surprised how many guys come up to me and say "Man, I wanted one of those so bad in high school!!"

As far as the water pump failure, it was only off the road about a week. It's running and driving at any time, though lately I noticed a new steering box leak so that'll have to be fixed soon :(

It still feels great. I liked the feel of the LUK flywheel a lot better because it was a lot heavier, thus making it easier to get moving.

I know the feels... every time I get something buttoned down, another something pops up. Can't seem to get ahead of it.

But the truck is great, love all the work you've done, that red interior is a challenge, IMO, and all the black you've added has really toned it down. Because everyone else in this thread has said it, I will too.... IF YOU EVER WANT TO SELL IT OR TRADE IT FOR A HASHED OUT 2ND GEN LEMME KNOW K????!!!!

I want a turbo, it's on my list. Not the "short list", but the list... the more I read the more work and $$ it sounds like. How do you like the power? I understand it's pretty much stock... how much boost are you running?

Many years ago I had an 87 turbo 4runner. What a cool ride. Had the digital-ish dash. I did the intake, exhaust and put an intercooler stuck right through the hood on it. Along with a lot of gauges and other crap (bigger afm etc.) Had newer t4r wheels on it. That thing got a lot of attention. It was still slower than snail poop but everyone, and I mean everyone loved that thing! Neat to see one still around getting it done

This is clean for $900!! I just traded a 05 Yamaha YZ250F for a 1986 4Runner Turbo. Engine is complete but missing the turbo. Everything else is there... So it will be a long project for me aswell. I already took tons of ideas from your restore!

Nice first gen. There's something about them that draws me in and yours has it all. I'm looking for one myself, with turbo, and this is the year I will make it happen.

Anybody would be drawn to COB's 1st gen.

You ain't gonna find one out of the box like that :bravo:

I know its your truck and all, but the other wheels and tires look way better.

Tires out past the fenders (and white letters out) is so 90s, and 80s

the updated wheels and tires give a more high class appearance and give the impression of a caring owner.

Fantastic restoration either way.

Do you have any pics of how your soft top attached to the body/cab?
