Compiled: FJ Springs Lift Info for 4th gen

Put moog fj coils on 5100's set at 1.75 in front and wheeler's 1.5 spacer on stock coils in back. Had to use the no spring compressor spring compressor method. I did not want to loosen the LCA bolts so I used a spring compressor to assemble the 5100/fj combo. My 5100's did not come with the bushings so I had to reuse the old ones. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

New to the site. Did some work this weekend including FJ Trail Team springs/shocks with a Daystar front leveling spacer. Also have airbags in the rear, but they were only at 3-4 psi in these pics. 265/70/17 Rugged Terrains.

Installed my FJ springs (OEM) and Bilsteins today.
No issues with rear springs not seating as on the Moogs. Personally, no way I would let mine off the lift like that. :sorry:

I'm very happy with the ride, the lift amount, and the rake. Suits my needs perfectly.

And here is the pic after adding black FJ wheels and tires w/ 265/70/17 AT20s. Currently trying to find a semi-aggressive AT w/ snowflake rating.

I just picked up some General Grabber AT2s off TireRack.com, 265/70/18s for $156, they're snow rated, and decently priced with a 60K warranty.

New member, just reading and looking around. No T4R yet, but I'm hoping to be getting a Gen4 soon. I really like the idea of the FJR spring swap.
Just for clarification, to do this, you need springs and shocks off the FJR correct?
Also, have you guys had trouble getting the alignment correct with the lift?

I have a 2004 V6 4WD 150k miles 265/65/17 no heavy mods. I don't want to change the UCAs so I want to keep the front to no more than 3". I have a set of as new take-offs from what I believe was a 2010 FJ. I want it to be level or slightly higher in the back. My back shocks are leaking some so are pretty shot.

Should I go with the 1.75 or the higher setting and a 1" or 1.5" spacer in the rear? What's a budget spacer? The chart on the FJ swap thread is kind of hard to read.

Explain this, If I get this right the higher the setting on the 5100 the more it reduces the amount the shock can travel, correct? If this is the case Would it be better/worse/no difference to set them at the lowest setting and use a spacer instead?

You can just swap the springs from a 07 to current fj. 07-09 fj shocks are a direct replacement as well but are not required. The springs are the only thing that supplies the small amount of lift.

Can anyone confirm my potential setup will be level and not have rake? Have searched but haven't found an exact answer.

Also - Can I run this setup without replacing the UCA's? I will be upgrading tires next month to 275/65/18 Duratracs.

- FJ springs front + rear
- Bilstein 5100 front + rear
- Front shocks set at 2.5
- Daystar 1.5" rear spacer
- Shrockworks front bumper

Thanks!

Edit:
Here are my lift specs before/after Daystar lift:

Driver front 33 > 36
Passenger front 33.5 > 36.5
Driver rear 35 >36.5
Passenger rear 35 > 36.5

After adding the Shrockworks front bumper, I lost about 1" in the front

No you shouldn't need to replace them.

other than the trail versions or whatever it is, do the standard FJ shocks offer a benefit over the 4R standard shocks?

Great info here! Thanks everyone for sharing!

I have a 2003 2WD V8 4Runner with 165k and my X-REAS line started leaking right at the union joint where it connects to the hardline on the front right on a road trip this weekend. Blew oil all over the engine and exhaust cross pipe so I have a nice stinky burning oil smell coming from the 4runner every time I come to a stop, lol.

Just had it aligned on Thursday and the shop said the front left seemed to really sag and he saw a small leak thinking it was a shock reservoir system, not realizing what the XREAS system was. He said during the alignment they also check all tire balancing, pressure, ride height, etc.. He said the front left spring seems to be semi-collapsed.

Long story short, I'm thinking of going with the 5100's and FJ coils. Should I get 07-09 4WD FJ coils? or would the 2wd be best suited for my 2wd 4Rnr. I'm thinking the 4WD would be better for the heft of the V8 up front.

Not interested in too much of a lift, but to get it level and keep it from bottoming out so easy I'm thinking the combo would be good.

Thoughts?

Thanks, Kane

Edit by Mod: Due to the popularity of this swap with 4th gens I am going "stick" this thread. Another very helpful resource for those considering the swap can be found here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/suspension/78933-4th-gen-all-whove-done-fj-swap.html  CJ3Flyr

So, I just did the FJ spring lift and found myself running all over the place to find the information I needed. I've been on many other forums and most others make a lot more use of Stickies for this kind of information that's widely requested. I don't know if we try to keep the number of stickies down or what, but if a mod sees fit to sticky this, that would be great.

Anyways, on to the info. (Disclaimer: I am just organizing information here so it is easy to find, not claiming any of this as my own)

The parts:

You'll need a set of stock FJ cruiser springs, which many members get from Craigslist, eBay, or the FJ community classifieds

any set from an 07-09 4x4 FJ will be a direct replacement for any 03-09 4runner, but those from 2010's require some slight modification. 2WD springs will fit as well, but will not yield the same results.

According to X6RUNNER:
The 2010 front FJ strut's lower joint needs to be modified in order to fit a 4Runner. The rear mounting hole (on the chassis) also need to be enlarged to fit the larger bushing washer. It can be done with some power tools.

The FJ has 3 models, all with different shocks. The base model has Tokico shocks. The Trail Teams and TRD both have Bilsteins, although the shocks are different between the two. The Bilstein's are definitely preferred, but any of them are an upgrade based on the responses I've seen.

It is important to note that there is a difference between the driver and passenger side front springs. The drivers side is about 1/4'' taller and a little stiffer to offset the additional weight of the driver and gas tank. The springs are color coded Yellow/Green on driver side and Gray/Green on the passenger side.

Most people who do this lift add a spacer to the front springs to "level" the truck. There are two ways people define level. First is having the running boards and roof rack level, which is what most prefer and what the following setups should achieve. Others go for equal space between the tire and fender (takes more lift to achieve this). So, if you're a v6 owner wanting equal space between the tire and fender, the 1/2" spacer may need to be considered.

The 1/4'' toytec spacer (1/2'' net lift) is suggested for a v6 runner and the 1/2'' spacer (listed as 3/4'' lift, but actually yields 1'' net lift) for the v8. The cornfed 1'' lift front spacer yields similar results to the toytec 1/2'' spacer. Some also add a full spacer lift on top of the springs such as the cornfed 2/1 or the Daystar 2.5/1.5 to give some extra height.

If you have a 2wd (v6 or v8), the 1/4" spacer is recommended. The FJ springs provide more lift on 2wd's than 4wd's.

Note: this lift can be done with XREAS; it is highly suggested that you leave the hydraulic lines connected to the shocks/struts and work on them in the wheel well because if you lose fluid from the system it is ruined. However, there are ways to disconnect the XREAS if you so desire.

Many people (including myself) have used and suggest the no spring compressor method for the install.

Expected Lift

The FJ springs alone net about .5-1'' in the front and .25-.75'' in the rear. 1/2" front is more common on v8 4runners. On 2wds (v8 or v6) and v6 4x4 1" is about average. Most models get about 1/4" from the rear, but some do get as much as 3/4". This difference is what makes it so difficult to suggest an exact setup, there are way too many factors to consider when swapping out the springs. Mainly, all of our 4runners have sagged different amounts on the stock suspension, same for all the FJ's. So, the lift gained depends on how much use your stock springs have and also how much use the FJ springs you have sagged.

Also, many members have been impressed by the change in ride quality. The FJ springs are stiffer, reducing body roll and brake dive. However, the ride is far from harsh and many prefer it to stock.

So is what your saying in thread is that only 07- 09 springs and 2010s with mod will work?

If you are swapping springs only, any year 07+ springs will work. If you want to use the FJ shocks, only 07-09 shocks are a direct swap. 2010+ will still fit but require minor modifications.
