Hows the ride at the 2.5 notch?
Ive read through this thread a couple times but can't recall seeing an answer regarding ride quality at the different settings.

I started at the second setting (.85) and ended up at the top setting (2.5). The ride may have been better at the .85 setting but I am certainly not disappointed with the 2.5 setting. Rides like a truck. And looks much better with the extra lift. I had also considered using the very bottom setting with OME springs. At this point, for my needs, I will stick with what I have.

I can only compare the ride at the 2.5 setting with new Moog FJ 4x4 springs (the only setting I've had it on) to the old shocks which were shot and the oem springs after 115,000 miles (probably a little compressed). The ride is much better and very smooth without being stiff or harsh at all and body roll while cornering is noticeably less. I will start taking it off road in a week and a half and I expect it to do even better on that terrain.

Rugger92,

I sent you a PM.

265s or 285s

So after countless hours of reading thru the forum I think I am set on what I want to do with my runner. I just got the billie 5100s F/R and plan on setting the fronts to the 1.75 notch. I have also ordered 09 FJ coils all around and the daystar 1.5 rear spacer kit. With that said I am looking to upgrade my tires to Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs and have a friend in the tire business so I shouldnt have to dish out too much cash. I think I have done enough research to find that 265/70/17 with this setup should work with a low chance of rubbing.

Since I could most likely get the tires for a low price I am curious on what else would need to be done to my runner if I wanted to jump up to 285s? Would I need a body lift and spacers for the wheels? I know there will probably have to be some trimming involved to make this all work as well. I run a 2003 V6 2WD SR5...Any help is appreciated.

A Little Help Please!

I feel like I've read every thread and every post on this entire forum about the whole FJ spring swap, and every time I think all the questions I have are answered I see another post or thread saying not to go that route. Oh, and I have used the search bar in this forum to try and answer my questions before I ask.
The wife's 06 4Runner is in desperate need of new suspension after 134,000 miles on the stock X-REAS. We are wanting to go with the FJ springs and Bilstein 5100. I have located a few different people selling their FJ springs but they are either wanting way to much for them or the shipping quote they send me is more expensive than just buying brand new FJ springs from the stealership. I am down to my last two options which is, buying the MOOG replacement FJ springs or just buying the complete TOYTEC lift with the Bilsteins.

So.... I guess my question is, are the MOOG springs really that bad? They are definitely the cheapest route to go (and cost less than most of the shipping quotes that I have received from FJ spring sellers). I know I have read other members have had problems with getting them to seat right. Does everyone that has used the MOOG's have this problem? Or is there a fix for it?

I feel like every time I think I am getting somewhere with buying some used FJ springs that by the time you add up shipping and the cost of the springs, then the Bilsteins, etc.... that I could just go ahead and buy the TOYTEC kit.

Or another suggestion if it is on a 4R that isn't doing much in the offroading area; keep the stock springs and use the 5100s. That is my plan in 2-3 months and I will be using it offroad 3-4x a year. I will be putting the fronts at 2.5 and leaving my Daystar 1.5" spacer in back. I am sure the springs are a bit tired, but they certainly aren't dead.

Without having to read 98 pages worth.. bought some fj coils on tacoma tokiko shocks. No top hats. The question is, is this straight bolt on, and no alignment needed? Or do I have to mod anything. . Also I have a toytec spacer, is that going to be too much lift with the coils or can I use both?

live action!!

I have an 04 V6 4WD and am planning to put in FJ coils and Bilstein 5100s. From what I've read in this thread I will be nearly level with a front setting on the 5100s of either 0.85 or 1.75" - with a slight forward rake at the former and possibly a bit nose-high with the latter.

I also get the impression that 0.85 should be "safe" for the CV boots, but 1.75 might cause problems/leakage leading to eventual replacement of the CV axles. Finally it seems that the caster won't be too far off with 0.85, but may be impossible to adjust into the correct range with 1.75 (unless I go with aftermarket UCAs).

Is all this correct? I'd be inclined to go with 1.75 if the issues mentioned in the second paragraph don't really occur until one gets to higher front end lift, but if I'm correct I'll settle for 0.85.

Any opinions/info welcome.

I believe rugger92 did the highest setting and still was able to align the front end back to spec. Please correct me if I misspoke!

Vachss, alia176 is correct, I did set my front Bilsteins at the third and highest 2.50" setting and being new to all of this didn't even think about the effect that would have on the UCA. When I took my rig into the mechanic shop to do an alignment (a place I've been going to for years and trust), I told them to check out my work to make sure I didn't screw anything up, they did, and reported that although my "toe" alignment was way off and they fixed it, that everything looked good. I haven't had any problems while driving it in the city, highway, or off road (dirt, mud, rock crawling). In fact the ride is excellent.

I don't have any issues with the CV axle angle or with either control arm. My belief is that the way the Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks are designed allows them to be put in without changing anything else like you would have to if you did a "traditional" lift with spacers, etc.

I think with a V6 you will be happy with the 1.75" setting and will not have any of the problems you mentioned. You can see in the pic that the highest setting for my 4runner looks pretty level. However, when measuring the running board, it is a little less than a 1/4 inch high in the front. The measurement at the wheel wells, though, shows the rear being 1/4" higher. So, the frame is not really level, it is a touch nose high, but the eye sees the truck as level because of the wheel wells. For my purposes, I like it like that.

Question for everyone,
I added fj coils with tokiko shocks (take off of 2012 tacoma fronts) my question I tried to add my toytec spacer in while putting the new shocks and coils, do I have to have a spring compressor to use the toytec spacer or can I just not use it because the spring is taller, I installed th e shocks and coils by using the no spring compressor install. Now that the springs have settled pretty sure I didn't gain any height because no spacer now

My shocks need to be replaced so after reading a bunch I figured id go with the bilstein 5100s and the MOOG FJ springs.

What should I expect to pay ballpark for a shop to purchase and do the install? I know the prices of the components, but I have no idea what kind of labor is involved, and would like to get some kind of idea what is a fair price before I call around. I have a 05/Sr5/V8. Thanks!

I think I got the FJ springs delivered for $60 and $70 bucks a pair, and got the 5100 shocks for a really good price, like $330 delivered?

So I have about $60+$70+$330 = ~$460

That was last fall, and I'm pretty sure about the prices. I found the absolute rock bottom low prices I could.

I would expect to pay an hour's labor per corner so approximately ~$400 which I would say is a fair deal

2005 V6 4wd
Replaced fronts with FJ Trail Shocks and Coils.
Added Daystar 1" budget boost - KT09117BK

I checked everything over at about 100 miles and I noticed the rubber piece that goes between the top of the coil and the upper strut mount has smooshed and pushed out on the drivers side. Coils are not upside down.
Any thoughts? Common? Bad?

I figured id start in this forum first.
