Compiled: FJ Springs Lift Info for 4th gen

Small update, ordered the 5100s and some other parts. Ended up getting the Moog FJ coils for the front, and the Moog T4R coils for the rear. Both arrived horribly packaged, with each coil having at least 10+ chipped sections throughout the powercoat or whatever the finish is. They are scratched to the point where it looks like they have almost been installed before. I've order paper towels that came with more protective packing...

Decided to return all of the coils, including the 1.5 rear spacer, and am going to bite the bullet and go for the T1/T12 coils, with only a 1/4" spacer on the FL to level out the driver's sag based on: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/236245-mrpinks-build-thread.html . I thought about doing the OME stuff, but the heavier spring rate, combined with some comments around here about the valving for 5100s not playing the best pushed me towards the Wheeler's stuff.

Will update when everything arrives!

sorry to bump your post from march, but how did this work out for you? interested in doing the same lift with the same equipment. thanks!

Hey John, your ride looks great! Did you happen to measure your before and after from hub to fender? I'm curious what kind of lift you ended up getting.

I went a different route for my suspension and got way more lift than I was expecting and I'm wondering if it's too much and I'll need to mess with a new UCA. I've already had my CV axle boot split, but that's not surprising on a rig with 160K on it.

People talk about needing new UCAs with a 3" or more lift, but that doesn't tell much when you're comparing to a saggy old suspension. What's the baseline for the 3" to start from? It seems like what I really need to know is, at what hub to fender measurement do I need to worry about new UCAs?

Thanks, with NEW OEM FJ shocks, coils and all compared to my XREAS was roughly 1 inch lift. That also include the skinny and a tad taller tires. The FJ Wheels also has a different offset so the tires and wheels come out a bit.

Yeah, I've read about new UCA when lifting over 3' as well. Sorry I can't help answer that question. I do vaguely reading talk about all that in the thread when I read through the whole F**ken thread. Where I can't remember now. Good luck

Great info on here regarding the whole 5100/FJ combo. I've notice a lot of height discrepancies when one states they are on FJ coils set at .85 (no spacers) and fj rears with 5100. Looking for a real mild lift but some of the infor here is misleading. 265/70/17 AT's are the plan for fitment on an after market wheel 17x8.5

I have Moog 2007 FJ rear coils with no spacers and running, for now, 2017 Tacoma Bilstein rear shocks. Plenty of room with zero rubbing for my 265/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrains. Front are 2019 Tacoma Bilsteins with the Tacoma coils.

The Tacoma shocks are a little soft and I will probably change them out for 5100s sometime soon.

Would the red Bilstein TRD offroad shocks allow me to stay at the factory height on my 2003 4Runner if I used my oem stock springs?

Do I really need to replace my oem springs? I have 222,000 miles on it.

I had the same question when I did my suspension and concluded that I didn’t want to do the work and then always wonder how much better the ride would’ve been had I done the springs. So I did my research and learned that springs are a very underrated part of the suspension.

I think a lot of people spend money, sometimes a lot of it, on shocks but no springs, and then are disappointed with the ride. You have a 2003, so you’re riding around on metal that has carried a 4500 lb. SUV for 17 years on the equivalent of nine trips around the planet. They had a good run, but it’s time for new ones.

Check out the suspension link in my sig for a side-by-side pic of my stock 2007 springs versus FJ springs.

Hmm, that's odd, because with my '06 V8, the front 5100 at 0.85 and Moog FJ
springs all around, running board is only 1/4" lower in the rear than front.
Now if I wanted to equalize the wheel gap (between top of tire and fender)
then I'd have to raise the front another full inch, but that definitely would
create a reverse rake at the running board (and almost everywhere else).

Daemon, sorry for the massive 3 year resurrection, but what tire size are you running in the picture you shared (included in this post) ? Can you post an update on how it's sitting?

I'm asking because I am after a very similar setup on my 2006 V8 Limited, and I can't decide between the 0.85 perch or the 1.75 perch with the Moog FJ springs, which seem like they give more of a lift than the actual Toyota FJ spring take-offs. I'm planning on running 265/70r17 on Level 8 mk 6's...

If anyone has any advice or new images of a similar setup, I'd appreciate it - I've pretty much exhausted all searches and threads.

Daemon's setup in question below:

Been pouring over this topic for the last few weeks and had a question I can’t seem to find the answer to. So at the risk of sounding naive, has anyone used OME shocks and FJC coils?

@%1; Was thinking mostly ride quality to be honest. Had figured that the compatibility would be pretty straight forward assuming I had 4Runner specific shocks (pardon my ignorance)...

I bought a set of 5100s (front and rear) with the plan on using the stock springs, setting the perch to the 2nd clip (.85"). Simple question, would I gain about the same amount of lift in the front using FJ springs with the 5100s on the bottom clip (stock) setting? I'm really just interested in lifting around the 1" mark in the front, the rear will remain as-is. My truck is an v6 4x4.

I just installed stock FJ struts with a 2.5" spacer last night, as well as JBA UCAs. I seem to have gotten a good amount of lift, but I'm also comparing it to stock, saggy XREAS that was leaking. no more rubbing on the body mount with my 33s, so that's good.

one thing I noticed driving home was that every little bump made the truck sort of shutter. almost like for every 1 bump or crack the shocks would bounce up and down a few times.

I've not gotten an alignment yet as I finished the install at 6pm. would this help that shuttering? or did I go too tall with the 2.5" spacer?

Just finished lifting mine a couple weekends ago. FJ springs and Bilstein 5100's at all 4 corners. JBA upper arms and Daystar 1.5" spacers in the rear. The wheels are Icon Rebounds with 285/70/17 Wildpeak tires. I originally set the front to the 1.75" setting with the 1.5" spacers in the rear. However, when it was done, it looked like the rear was too high and the front too low. Ended up pulling the front apart again and raised the front to the highest 2.5" setting. Looks much better now. As far as being sensitive to bumps, mine seems to be the same way...before and after alignment. Just chalking it up to it being lifted now and will just have to deal with it. It doesn't bother me as much now as it did at first though. Just is what it is I guess.

yeah, mine was the fact that the rear hadn't been done yet. I got the rear 1.5" spacers and the FJ shocks in on Saturday and it made a night/day difference. the front doesn't jounce like it did before. both my rear XREAS shocks were dead (one had rusted off at the mount so it wasn't even working) and that must have been throwing the fronts off.

now it looks proper and rides nice!

My 5100s and front FJ springs are just sitting here in my office waiting to be installed. Looking at all these pictures makes me wish I had a lift and experience to do the install myself.

2005 SR5 4.0 2WD... Bilstein 4600s with Moog springs (front springs for the V8 model). Goal was to reduce rake and replace aged OEM suspension. Super pleased with the results! Got some pics, parts list, and hub-to-fender measurements here. Still need some mileage before I’ll know how it all settles out.

I’d say go for it man! The info on this forum and some YouTube watching didn’t steer me wrong. If you have some jack stands and a decent toolbox, you’ve got all you really need.

Ugh, I know.. But after doing jobs in the past I have found my limit and I think something like this is just a little too daunting, unfortunately.

I keep going back and forth with the setting options on the 5100s. I'd like to keep the lift amount to 1.5"-2" in the front max as I want to keep some slight rake in the stance. I am not lifting the rear.

Right now my current measure (ground to fender) are 33.25"(f) and 36"(r) the 2 options I keep thinking about are:

Option 1: FJ spring w/ 5100s set to the 'stock' setting + 1/4" toytec spacer for an extra .5" of lift

Option 2: FJ spring w/ 5100s set to the '0.85' setting w/ no spacer

I've seen people in this thread say that the 0.85" setting is more like 1.5" w/ stock springs and another ~1" with FJ springs. I feel like thats a bit more then I'm looking for but it's hard to say. I'm leaning towards keeping the clip on the bottom setting and adding the 1/4" spacer on top. No sure though, any suggestions?
