TECHIE ROUTE:
This would be a fun project.
Actually you can probably do this with the free Google Sketchup and then have someone on the internet to 3D print it for you. You can even put her favorite design or her birthday or your anniversary etc... on it....
ARTIST ROUTE:
Use this product, make a sculpture - upper part mold to the "cup", with cup handle exposed; lower part fit to the 4Runner cup holder. Let this cure, you will have your "custom" cup holder....ray2:

I hope this brings to a close this thread which caused so much pain

HaHa. That's one of the first things my wife asked about.
I hope the photo is there, it solved the problem to a "t". I did not expect to open such a can of worms, but it sure opened my eyes to the nature of the average user. Many of you posted pictures of the kind of closed top cups I prefer. When she spills (often) I politely say we are in a car, not a cafe. She wanted a RAV4 but agreed to a 4Runner, so why shouldn't I try and eliminate her one complaint?
The above cup holder drops right into the Toyo's rubber ashtray insert, and it holds everything. Problem solved.
Get her a Rav 4, how I am fixing the whole "this truck is too big, I don't feel comfortable driving it but I need 4x4 for the snow" thing my wife pulled out when I picked up my runner.
Really she just wanted the Jeep Cherokee.
