CV Boots Leaking...

The west marine clamps are discontinued, but may be special ordered. I just did this. Unfortunately, the clamps they supplied are not correct. They're now substituting a clamp that is both too wide and also not smooth on the inside.

You need a smooth clamp that's 9mm wide. The 25-40mm size is about perfect. I found a new supplier on Amazon. I ordered them and with my prime shipping, they were very reasonable. $7.10 for a pack of ten. I installed this morning and they're great.

Also need two sizes right?

"EDIT - since writing this, West Marine no longer stock the bands but Schuly has found another supplier for the bands

http://www.mcmaster.com/# stocks them in both 430 and 304 SS. See page 257 of the catalog.

The part numbers for the (304SS) 3-1/2" to 4-3/8" is 5574K24 http://www.mcmaster.com/#5574k24/=dcpb40

and for the 1" to 1-5/8" is 5574K16 http://www.mcmaster.com/#5574k16/=dcpbju

You have to order the larger in packs of 5and the smaller in packs of 10. But it is still much cheaper than ordering the high grade 316SS."

Well that couldn't have worked out any better. I just ordered these parts now thanks to you guys. I a short ride away, and these should be at my house by tomorrow, to fix my leaky CV's. (just lifted the truck on Saturday, and discovered this leak this morning)

Will have to clamp my boots these days. Two months after going from a 2" spacer lift to a 3" suspension lift I noticed the leaking on the inner boot. I am planing to add some grease to the leaking boots to replace the lost grease. What grease are people using for CV joints?

Related to this I noticed a grinding noise at full lock when steering left. The noise is grind-clunk-grind-clunk about every turn of the wheel. It only happens at full lock when holding the steering wheel tight, if I give in a bit it goes right away. CV joint or steering stops?
 
Installed the clamps from McMaster Carr literally 5 minutes ago. I'm going to go for a ride shortly to check out my leaking CV problem with hopes of no more grease.

The new hose clamps worked for me on the driver side, leaked grease is gone now after adding mcmaster carr clamps, but unfortunately the passenger side boot had ripped already so I am replacing the cv axle on that side. I ordered a replacement cv axle with lifetime warranty for $100 from Napa auto parts. Look this up, its easier than replacing a boot.

Also note that the NAPA sells couple of flavors of new CV shafts with either neoprene outers or heavy duty (HD) outers. I went with the HD outers and a brand new axle, not a remann'ed unit. The HD outers are very similar to what the OEM boot kit supplies.
 
I'd like to report that after my 10 mile round trip to and from the gym I no longer have grease coming out of those CV boots. I'm going to keep my eye on them, but so far so good with the McMaster Carr clamps.

Good point. I went with the new axle (you need the new one to get the lifetime warranty I think) but the regular boots. I figure if the boot rips again I can replace it anyways for free, but in retrospect I should've just gone with the HD boot and been done with it.

I read about another user that replaced one side, then used the warranty to replace the other side also, since they are the same part numbers. :gossip:
 
I just got a new (reman'd) set of CV axles in the mail from CVJ Axles. Now I'm trying to decide.. Try to just clamp off my current boots, or go ahead and swap in the new axles?

If clamping off my current boots, how much grease being thrown is "too much" -- to where it needs to be repacked with grease?

I'm already changing the wheel bearings on both sides, and hopefully that will mitigate the grinding noise I'm getting from the front. Doing both CVs would probably give more peace of mind though.. I'd hate for the CVs to be partially responsbily. I'm torn. Thoughts?

Put 100+ miles on yesterday and still looking good.

Once I added my lift i tore my driver side boot first then a day or two my passenger tore. sprayed CV greese everywhere on both sides it was the inner boots that tore. I know a buddy at a drive line shop an took the shafts to him one saterday just to see what he had to offer. You can have some machine work done on these things and have bigger bearings installed and beef them up so to say. He offered to take my old one and give me a "built" one for 215.00 per half shaft. Being broke an all I didnt take his offer but in our converstation he had pulled out a tundra CV axle he had on the shelf he was just pointing a few things out when i noticed The boots have the same diameter openings as our shafts but there longer! just long enough to completly forgive our negative angles. Knowing that CV axle failure mainly comes from torn boots i had them rebuild my shafts with tundra boots. I've got 9700 miles on them with a 3" lift no diff drop. Running great!!

I know this is old but this makes total sense but what year tundra cv axle did he show you.
Cause if I can just order that boot and get grease from Napa. Boom custom extended boots and don't have to worry about flexing and the boots ripping or over stretching.

Your not the first to ask, unfortunately I do not know. I'm assuming it would be from the older model tundras that offered the 4.7l V8's. They're still running great though lol.

It would be great if we could get some verification on this. I might look into it eventually. My new boots would have to fail prematurely for that to happen.

I looked into the part number details at Villagetoyotaparts.com the one for the 4runner is 26 and some change, the one for an 03 tundra is 29 and some change. If no one at a parts store can take some measurements. it wouldn't cost much to order both and see the difference. I wasn't able to find any part details online for any of the boots.

I'm in the middle of doing same thing, I'm also replacing my cv seal on the diff since I tore it prying old cv out, I'm bleeding brakes as well. wheres the transfer case at, might as well flush it too......im flushing tha diff anyways. I'm also replacing pads and rotors. whats cool is since before lurking on this forum I never really worked on cars much, learned a lot here, project is taking longer than I wanted but hey labors free so who cares.
