Daniel's 2000 5-speed 4x4 SR5 Rescue, Restoration and Maintenance Thread

Any luck getting the sunroof working? I have a similar issue to you and couldn't solve it.

I had a local shop look at it and we found out the cables are frozen. Motor still works fine, but cannot budge them. The cables and housings are ridiculously expensive though so I just disconnected the plug for now so I don't keep playing with it.

I'm thinking I'll just pull a working assembly from a part out and clean it up and maybe get new cables piecemeal and then when I'm ready, pull the headliner and swap.

I really don't want to pull the headliner although I've read it's not too bad on these.

I miss the sunroof...let this be a lesson folks! Grease and clean your sunroof assemblies regularly!

Wow. Just wow. I just saw you on another thread and realize I haven't visited your thread since May. Your paint looks soooo good.

During the summer I replaced the fuel ratio thingy and the mpg's came back. It rolled over 200k and I was getting 22 mpg on the highway. It had dropped to 19 for a while.

It's presently living in Blacksburg and I miss it! I didn't feel good about my son hurtling down I-81 in his Tacoma so I gave him my 4Runner. He just had the exhaust replaced. If he ever comes home I will stand by and issue handy tips while he polishes it. Yours looks amazing.

What fuel ratio thingy? \hijack

The upstream air fuel ratio sensor for the post 2000 cali spec 4runners

Same spot as the upstream O2 sensor on other trucks.

I was getting shit mileage and running really rich, replaced that...right as rain. No more cel.

Tim the Toolman's low tech power steering fluid change completed today.

Old fluid was probably original. Glad I changed it. Steering feels better and there is less pump noise now.

Used Redline D4 ATF which is compatible with Dexron III applications.

dude, i'm glad those videos are helping people out! i have the pleasure of working with timmy the "toolman" on these sweet vids

question: you did wonders with your polishing..

did you compound then polish? or the polisher does all the work with the right product?

any tips of tricks to achieve this? and suggestions on entry level polishers/pads?

i have a little oxidation above the rear quarter panel window i'd like to address before it gets "out of control"

Are you the infamous "Sean?" And yes, big thanks to you and Tim. I wish we lived closer we could a video together on polishing. I've wanted to do one, any tips for that? Editing software you guys use, camera?

Also, speaking of YouTube videos. Check out "thejunkman2000" channel. He has a beginner series on machine polishing. Start with episode 1 and take notes! Absolutely fantastic eli5 breakdown of how it all works. From claying to compound etc.

So, believe it or not the truck still has work to be done. I need to wet sand the hood and roof to really pull some of the harder stuff out of those panels. But as for the rest, the polish I used in those posts took the oxidation off with the orange pads on the 5 speed setting with a 2-4 overlapping passes.

Came right off. Now granted I really do think a lot of that is because I have single stage paint. There is no clear to deal with or have had fade.

Normally, it's clay, compound, polish and then seal. But the key is you need to test a small section to see what works. In my case the polish worked fine to remove the oxidation so I started there. If it hadn't I would have gone with the compound. If that doesn't work like with the hood, you have to bust out the big guns like a random orbital machine which I don't have or wet sand...which I've done with headlights! Lol

Can't go wrong with the porter cable 7424xp. As far as pads, I love chemical guys hexlogic pads on Amazon. Just get an assortment. The yellows are for compound, orange for polish and then red for wax/sealant.

Thank you! Much appreciated! It is amazing what TLC can do with these older trucks. So many folks just don't put the LITTLE bit in over time that it gets to the point of what I had to do and they don't feel like dealing with it.

Long weekend...but fun.

New Genuine Toyota Lower Ball Joints and Outer Tie Rods in with alignment after.

Was fun using my new Milwaukee impact wrench. Thing made short work of any and all bolts/castle nuts I used it on. Even with the cotter pins stuck in them. Just boom, right through.

Old ones really weren't too bad at 154k. Will keep them as spares. Feels good to know new ones are in though.

Really really nice build/resto! I like that you are keeping it mostly stock. These trucks are incredibly reliable without serious modding.

On a side note, I'm really digging that e46!

Hell yeah. I'm pretty much all about OEM+ with both my cars. That E46 got a limited slip and coilovers kept at virtually stock height. This truck will be similar. I'm keeping an eye on Absalom's Cookie Cutter builds. Somewhere between Weekend Warrior Pavement/Trail. 99 talls...E-locker retrofit...something like that.

Thanks man! My other boo... :car:

Have you done any exhaust work on it? Those 330s sound nasty with an eisenmann exhaust on them!

Not much to report with 4runner. Did drive up to NYC last weekend to pick up an exhaust for the E46. Got 400 miles to a tank ~23 mpg on the highway with room to spare when I did get gas. Very happy.

Only thing really left is the front brake service I have parts for, as the rotors are definitely warped. But the pads still have plenty of life as do the rotors so it's not huge priority, just annoying. Would like to get it done before winter though. Sunroof fix has been moved to bottom of list given Winter is Coming.

Otherwise, I've been browsing around casually for new bumpers. Trying to decide if sticking with the chrome is worth it or swapping for black painted and maybe sourcing a Sport Hood and painting the grille. I already have the flares so might as well top it off...but then again...better things to spend money on like frame cleaning/sealing which is WAY more important.

Also, been itching to do something about the sound system. I drive around a lot with friends and we always listen to music. I'm used to having a sub or at least a little more bass but I damn sure wouldn't want to give up the cargo space. Looking at a custom enclosure for the wheel well/storage cubby area.

Almost bought a rear locker housing, but shipping was cost prohibitive. Checking my gear ratio is on the list of things to do. It's probably a 4.10 but want to be sure. Also need to check my pre-wiring situation, probably nothing there, but who knows. Dream/goal is housing swap with locker, wired up to look 100% stock with the OEM switch in the usual spot. BUT...not sure if it would easier to just sell while I'm ahead and then go on the hunt again for my (and many others) unicorn. :keyboard:

tl;dr Getting great gas mileage, fantasizing about things to do.
