Daytime Running Lights

As far as I know on the 2003-2005 models, the dealer is the only able to activate it if already available. They have to hook up a scan tool and change the settings.

On your 2006 did the dealer have to replace the relay or just change a code in the onboard computer to activate the DRL's?

Changed the relay. I provided the relay and instructions, and they did the rest from there. Took an hour of labor. :bigok:

Okee Dokee, I finally did it! I ordered the DRL flasher relay early this week and installed it this morning. I followed the instructions posted in the thread and found out I had the non-DRL flasher unit, so I replaced it with the DRL flasher unit and it works! Very cool! :biggrin2:

The hardest part was getting the relay off the fuse box.

Have you folks determined if there is a difference in the turn signal bulbs of the trucks with factory DRL's and the bulbs in trucks without factory installed DRL's?

I don't know if anyone has noticed, and i dont know if this only concerns the 06s or even the 03-05s, but have you guys looked at the lens cover of the headlights?? My friend noticed this, that i didnt. There's a "DRL" logo on it. It has like a "KOITO" or something, then "DRL" right next to it.

I guess it means, it's all DRL ready??

DRL Install Update

It's been a little over 2 years since I've done the DRL mod and my front light burned out yesterday. I've attached a picture of the old bulb and a new one. You can see the old one looks pretty bad and burned, it doesn't look like the bulb was made to withstand constant usage. Maybe that's why Toyota decided to use the 4157 bulb instead of the 7440 on models equipped with DRL from the factory. Otherwise, there are no problems with the wiring or the socket that I could tell.

Does anybody have the Daytime Running Lights(DRL) on thier rigs?

I was wondering if anyone knew other than the dealer, where you could find the kit for Daytime Running Lights? I want to add them to mine, because I think my insuarance company will give me a discount.

EDIT: So you don't have to read the entire thread, you can have DRLs by swapping out the proper relay. The part number for DRL flasher relay (81980-35020), the Non DRL Flasher Relay is (81980-5003D) Instructions for swapping the relay are at Yotatech (http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?p=391085#post391085)

The relay it's self had a small clip in it. It slides into a holding clip behind the fuse juction box.

1) remove lower steering panel by removing two 10mm screws at the bottom of the panel on either side of the hood release. Unplug any/all connectors on left side of panel so the panel can rest down on the floor. No need to remove connector on right side of panel.

** The NON-DRL relay is smaller then the DRL relay. You will see the the lighting wires connect to a small wire harness, and that wire harness connects to the NON-DRL relay that is clipped on. you must remove the relay and the small harness.

6) Connect slide the new, bigger (2.5"), Black, DRL relay into the wiring harness and then onto the same clip the NON-DRL relay was on. Plug the connector in to the relay without the wire harness adapter. (You don't need it anymore)

7) Reverse for assembly

DRL mod disabled auto power window and headlight time-out

O.K. I installed the DRL relay on my 2006 4-runner SR5. The DRL function worked as advertised. However, I noticed that:

1. My auto power window on the driver side no longer worked
2. The factory headlight timeout also was disabled (in case you left the lights on and forgot about it).

Does anyone have any additional information on this issue? It's a hard trade-off to have DRL and no auto-power window.

Wait it out. Play with the window for a few times. It should "relearn" how to use the auto driver's window. I didn't know the auto off headlamps are included with it but it should go back to normal.

When you installed it, did you disconnect the battery? The dealer disconnected mine and when I got it back, my auto windows (driver and rear) wouldn't work. Then my service guy drove it to the back, and it worked w/o him dropping it off to the techs in the back. He said that you should just play with the switch and the system will go back to normal. :

The system did "rel-earn" everything. It took about 30 minutes (maybe less, but I was driving it around).

It's pretty scary how changing a mechanical relay changes the parameters to the ECU and the system re-learns itself.

when the drls are on, the taillights are off

when the parking lights are on, the taillights are on

I hecka wanted DRL.

What I do is drive w/ my parking lights on. Doesn't cost me anything to mod & my taillights are on, so people in the back can see that they are on.

You know we all rely on taillights.

And I drive w/ headlights on when it starts to be sunset or when it's gloomy. Scared of other drivers, just like my dad, his reaction time is way slower than us.

Thank you very much. Yes I try to keep my baby nice and clean, as I don't plan to even use it in rain this winter until it's about 1.5 or 2 yrs old. I love looking at a clean undercarriage. lol.

But don't look at me differently, but I accidentally gave my baby a "booboo". It's a $800 one, but it's very minor and saved an accident with another car.... the whole story's here.

Hopefully the body shop won't leave my trunk door open too long (to save some new car smell), as that's one of the ways to access a few bolts to remove the rear bumper. (Crossing fingers and praying really hard)

No problem. I had the same problem when I got mine back from the dealer. I told them strictly to NOT open the windows, and keep the door closed as much as possible (see how much I really care and preserve it's newness and new car smell!). I was kinda shocked when I couldn't even open my driver's door window automatically, and luckily I had checked it while I was still at the dealer. As I may have mentioned in a previous post, as my service guy drove it back, apparently he rolled down my window to talk to the tech, and he noticed that it "re-learned" and it was fine.
