DIY: Interior LED swap (cluster, HVAC, switches, window, *steering wheel)

Just started this tonight. Need to change the clock out for white or something. Way too dark and can't read it at night. Pretty nervous about doin the guage clusters. Instead of using solid core wire, I cut only the positive wire on the LEDs short and used the longer negative wire to wrap around. Way faster and cleaner, one spot to solder.

How did you do the gear box and cupholder? Different type of bulb. Not sure how to solder in the flat top LED. Thanks by the way. Super helpful post.

UPDATE: SMDs for Info Center

Update: I have work with the manufacture and we have found a combination of SMD-LED that works in the T4.2 (Neo4) socket and lights up on the LCD information center. The bulb consists of 2 SMD1210 LEDs. I do have more bulbs to order an I would like to gauge everyones color interest, what color request do you have or would like to see?


The first shipment I received was the “Pure/5K white” color. Here is a preview, The “brown color” is the stock bulb with the Pure-5K white bulb.

I'd do white but I already did the neo4 HP mod. Might be able to market your products to my customers if you have good prices though

I am still working on pricing. I am going to try and sell them cheaper than SuperBrightLED; but we'll see once all the Fees are attached on to the product.

By not using a Neo-4 and doing some intense dremeling lol

Is there a way we can have a verified list of what size and type of LEDs go where and if they are a direct fit or what has to be modified? Seems like we have too many pages that have to be gone though with answers from different people. It would be less confusing for people. Maybe it can be a sticky or placed at the beginning of this thread.

I'll start a list.

-Gauges: PLCC2 LEDs (soldered in)
-Steering wheel audio controls: 3 PLCC2 LEDs (be VERY careful soldering this! I screwed mine up before and it's next to impossible to find another set! (Reference t4r gauge swaps)
-HVAC: Neo-3 LEDs for all knobs and buttons (fan speed/temp control/fan position/defrost/recirc/reset-mode) and 2 Neo-4 for the display. The holes the bulbs go into must be filed in order for them to fit in easily, but they can be forced in.
-HVAC indicator arrows: 3mm LEDs. The ones with two contacts on them.
-Cup holder and shifter: one for each. 74x wedge based bulb from superbrightleds.com
-Switches on the dash (DAC/rear window/seat heaters/diff lock): Neo-3 LEDs. Again, the opening must be widened. Sometimes the bulb must be sanded to shorten it so it will fit.

-Optional: my new product for the 4x4 switch that requires intense modification to make it fit. Worth having me do it. I have experience.

Did a bunch more work tonight. Fixed the LCD screen. Replaced the 1.2k ohm resistors with 100 ohm. Sssoooo much better. I have the hot spots on my HVAC knobs and 4x4, but still looks really good.

Not sure who you are talking to, but I am using the 3mm flat head LEDs. Pretty much exactly how darkie showed.

I use regular. The high-power require a 12v source, the hvac only supplies 4.7v

Hey Alex how do I go about getting inside the switches (DAC, Rear window, etc.) Do the faces pop off or do I have to get to them from behind? Any chance you could post a pic of how to file down the neo 3 bulbs or is it self explanatory?

You have to get at the switches from behind.

To file down the Neo 3, place a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface and rub the bulb on it

(Pretend its a Neo bulb, not an OEM bulb lol)

I had 1 bulb left so I attempted the DAC switch. Got the bulb in fine. Ground it down with my dremel. Went to check it, backwards, went to switch it, forgot to unplug switch first, POP, dang fuse. Blew the bulb too lol. Classic rookie mistake. To Superbright LED's I go!! I needed more anyway haha

Lol it's always a process of learning. The trusty "tail" fuse will always scare the crap outta you the first time it blows. I thought I fried my wiring harness hahaha. I was so worried!

LOL ya it sparked at me I was like "Sheeeeeeet did I just blow all my new lights?" Seems every Neo 3 is on that fuse cause they all went out haha then I had to start guessing fuses because the manual isn't exactly detailed, just says "Instrument lights" like 4 different places
