dnx 5140

just installed a kenwood dnx5140. took about 5 hours. install was easy and i havent attempted an install on anything in 10 years, but i have the right tools and am fairly mechanically inclined. unit is sweet and with the right directions anyone can complete this on their own. pac swijack for steering wheel controls was the biggest pain but it was doable. all in all, i'm surprise it wasn't more difficult and that everything actually worked as advertised. tell you what though, when you first turn the power on for that moment of truth, your heart sure is pumping. hate to throw $600 down the drain because i hooked the wires up wrong. lol.

Was actually thinking about picking up the 5140 but passed and picked up the Pioneer 4100 cause it was cheaper! Give us a review! and pics would be nice

Great timing!

I just received my dnx6140 today and will hopefully be installing it this weekend! :banana:

I do have one question for you.

What did you do with the brown wire from the Kenwood harness? It says that it is the "Mute wire". It says, "Connect to the terminal that is grounded when either the telephone rings or during conversation"

Does that mean just ground the brown wire? I'm confused.


Other than that I have my harness all soldered up and ready-to-go! Just waiting for the xm unit to come in tomorrow.

i did not use the brown wire, that is for the bluetooth and i did not buy the add on. i bought my 5140 for $575, no tax, free shipping and harness/dash kit included free from sonic electronics. it was a black friday online deal.

i also have installed a trd air intake and replaced all the speakers if anyone has questions about that.

the 5140/6140 is a really nice piece of gear. few moving parts, which is good, illumination matching, and the dual zone is money! i am going to spend about 2 hours just playing with it today. still cant believe the install was so easy.

Yeah, the brown wire is probably for the bluetooth. That is probably the main difference between the both, if I remember correctly.

I ended up ordering from 6ave.com ($690) because they are an authorized Kenwood dealer.

What kit/harness did it come with? Metra or the Scosche?

And did you wire up the backup camera? I ordered the Kenwood CCD-2000 camera. XM unit is on it's way here. Can't wait! :dancin:

yes, the big diff is that the 6140 comes with the bluetooth mic. i did not buy the backup camera, just didn't see the utility in it. i got the scoshe wiring harness and the metra dash kit. you'll see once you the pull out the stock radio, the install is very easy. use your stock radio brackets and screws to install the 6140, dash kit screws right on top in separate holes. i'll take a pic if i get around to it later.
