**DONE!!!!!**1988 SAS build - need advice for beginning

Got the new bearing races in except for the knuckles. Freezing the new ones and going to buy the race driver set at harbor freight. I'll be picking up new c clams while I'm there and then get to tacking the front hanger in place and hanging the axle tonight!

Question time, should there be grease in the axle tube ? In my donor axle there is grease inside. Seems like the seal should have stopped it but it didn't. Clean it all out? I haven't cracked open the pumpkin yet, but when I drained it everything looked normal.

Got the frame tubes welded. Started removing part of the frame up front to make the spring hanger flush. Rotors on and spacers on. Just waiting on a solution for the grease problem before I re assemble.

Axle will be hung tomorrow, just to check angles and set how far forward I will be pushing the front hanger. Although 3/4 is the limit and recommended amount for the v6.

So, what now? Bearing grease inside the axle tube? That's just weird. The axle seals are known for going out and letting the gear oil make it into your knuckles, but I can't see how any significant amount of knuckle grease would go in the other direction, not and stay solid grease.

I'd chalk that up to a weirdness and move on. Hit it with some degreaser if you're feeling diligent, but I'd probably scrape up what I could with my hand and ignore the rest.

Yeah, I finally found an answer last night on a jeep forum I think. Or maybe it was ih8mud. Other guys called it moly soup and said they checked their axles frequently for the grease moving around. Best answer I found was pull a towel through and then do weekly gear oil changes until it's clear. So not a big deal.

And yeah, when I pulled out the birf and shaft there was grease all over it. And when I shine a light in the tube there is just gobs of it hanging around. Just took a minute to find others with the same thing, and yeah no big deal so moving on.

Woot.

Looking good man! I know that feeling of getting that axle hung. It's that sense of accomplishment after dealing with all the BS cutting and grinding that has to be done before you can start slapping on the new goodies. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Not much progress this week due to a road trip to LA in the 2004. Got about 20 mpg at 80-85 with 33" tires. I'm happy.

Ordered this to get enough welding power to finish the front hanger welds.

It's a really good buy for the money. I was looking at a miller, MIG only for about 1200. This is mig tig and stick for 970. And the same amount of power. Need the 220!

Got to cutting my cross member to have the spring hanger flush with it. Almost done. Going to wait for the new welder to reinforce some gaps in the cross member before putting on the typing hanger. Just seems so much more secure without the 1/8 gap.

More grinding. Just waiting on that welder. Had some trouble fitting up to IFS calipers to the rotors. Not sure if it was poor visibility or if they just won't fit.

w00t! Here's the whole rig. Cart is temporary, going to build a better designed one later. Just needed to get them all together.
