Door Sill mod - $30

GREAT mod. Friend of mine did this on his truck....thought I'd try it on my T4R.

STEPS:
1. Buy piece(s) of aluminum at Home Depot or Lowes (1/16" thick, 1.5" wide)

2. Cut 2 pieces for front doors and 2 pieces rear doors. I cut mine 26" for front and 13.5" for rear. (If I were to do it again, I would have gone with 27" or 27.5" for front).
- suggest you do NOT buy 1/8" thick because they are more dif. to bend (which is needed to mold evenly when you apply them).
- I also found it easy to cut these with a hack saw by first taping them to a 2/4 piece of wood...see pic

3. Pop off existing door sills by using a screwdriver - slide screwdriver under existing sills and gently pry off (suggest you cover screwdriver with a cloth so you do not scratch paint).

4. Lay the new sills into place on your T4R - you'll notice they do NOT sit flat. So slowly bend them so they "mold" into place nicely.

5. Sand your new door sills with 400 grit sandpaper to get "matte" look

6. Clean aluminum strips VERY well - both sides.

7. Add vinyl logo/sticker to new door sills, based on preference. Can find these on ebay if you look around.

8. Spray new sills with a hard/protective coating. I used indoor/outdoor polyurethane (I used flat/matte....but you can use glossy if you want a more shiny finish). I added 3 coats of poly. You can find this at Home Depot.

9. Clean the area on the 4Runner where you're about to place the new door sills VERY well. If its not very well cleaned, your sills may come off over time.

10. Add 3M tape to the back of the new door sill and gently put into position. Once you're pleased with the new position, press firmly to set your new door sills into place.

Good Luck....

Really nice. Any way you can link us to the material at lowes?

I didnt see them on Lowes website or Home Depot website. But I did see something similar on HD's website...see link below....but these are squared-off alum. pieces (instead of flat pieces). These square pieces are right next to the flat ones when you're in the store.

48 in. x 3/4 in. x 1/16 in. Aluminum Square Tube - 40630.0 at The Home Depot

Also, if you're having trouble finding these in the store, go to building materials....or just ask someone "where are your 3 foot, threaded crown bolts?" You'll find the aluminum pieces in the same bin.

good luck.

looks great, thanks for the post! Now if only someone would make them LED lit, that would be interesting!

I Agree! sweet mod and anyone can customize with a different sticker. If I do it I'll stencil something on there and spray it with the color of my choice over the aluminum.

Looks good!
