Which grease did you use?

I've been reading a few of these threads and no exact grease gets mentioned except the mobilgrease. I'm thinking of getting the mobilegrease xhp 222 special for the moly application (.75% moly) and xhp 222 "regular" for the lithium zirks.

Did you end up getting XHP 222 Special for the Moly application?

I can't find Moly Lithium around here. I see I can order XHP 222 Special from Granger.

Anybody have other suggestions for a brand of Moly Lithium? Or where to buy?

I found Lucas Red "N" Tacky #2 at Wally World. The label says it's GC-LB rated and "Especially good for sliding surfaces" but nothing about Moly.

No, I actually just got some Valvoline from Napa, regular and moly, but didn’t grease anything yet (should have time tmrw).
 
I found XHP 222 Special in stock at Grainger.

I'm unable to find thinner stuff like #1 in a 14 oz cartridge to condition the seals and try to get some flow going. Ideas? I may work on that next summer, when the heat will help too.

From what i've gathered,

#2 and #7 - 2-3 pumps at most

#1, #3 and #8 are where you want to pump until you see new grease seep thru.

how about at #4, #5 and #6?

Here is the FSM picture. I have changed the numbering to match the TSB for consistency.

The FSM on page PR10 says to apply molybdenum disulfide lithium based chassis grease to the slip yokes only (zirk's 2 and 7). The spider bearing replacement page says to pack the spider bearings with MP Grease (Multi-purpose grease, usually lithium based, zirks 1, 3 and 8).

And on page MA-9, it specifies Moly grease for the Double Cardan joints (thanks for the find here MTwEeZi!)

I notice that the manual and the TSB reverse the direction of the zerk on the center carrier of the double cardan. Mine is like the TSB, facing the rear.

If you have broken or lost a zerk!
Replacement zerks can be purchased at a variety of retailers. The size of the zerks is 6mm.

I am not sure the thread pitch is 1mm or 0.75mm, both have been stated here. If you find out, please PM me so I can update this post with that info.

Molybdenum disulphide lubrication By A. R. Lansdown

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a naturally occurring molecule (known as Molybdenite) that been used as a lubricant for hundreds of years. It has been used on wooden wagon wheels, on early manufacturing and machining equipment, and other applications. It was even used as rust protectant. It has been produced all over the world, first primarily Australia, but later it mostly came from a huge deposit in Climax Colorado. Now it is produced all over the world. Despite its clear superiority to other lubricants of the day (talc and graphite), Moly never caught on as a mainstream solid lubricant until WWI.

It is very similar to graphite, but is better able to withstand high pressure and high heat. The molecules form small plates that act as lubricant. They fill in the microscopic pits and valleys on the surface of a metal forming a layer (this is due to strong adhesive and cohesive properties paired with an affinity for metals). This can eventually build up a layer of molybdenum sulfide on a lubricated metal surface. This layer can reach a maximum thickness of 1.2um.

Moly grease is just regular lithium (or other base, lithium seems to be most common) grease with a molybdenum disulfide additive in it that acts as a dry lubricant. This additive opened the possibility for sealed bearings that didn't need re-lubrication, because even when the oil seeped out, the molybdenum disulfide would act as dry lubricant.

I found this somewhat anecdotal torture test demonstration back in the 70's (sorry, it's just a read, no video)

Schaeffer oil (sells moly products) claims that this is untrue, and Moly will not build up layers large enough to bind up bearings. Also, they claim that moly will not come out of suspension, and can be stabilized to prevent clumping

2. Moly grease is bad for high speed bearings - This seems to be either untrue, or not the whole story. Several places including Schaeffer claim that moly is popular in high speed/high temp bearings.

3. Our high velocity joints (u-joints, double cardan) should use high temperature grease - Again, multiple places say that high temp is the perfect application for moly.

4. Sulfides will react with brass. Grease with molydenum sulfide should not be used anywhere where brass is used (is brass used in our joint at all? couldn't find this for sure and I havn't taken mine apart). Cuperous sulfides are a corrosion product for brass or other copper based alloys, so this could be true.

A couple points...
Commercially available moly greases (non-industrial supply, like autozone, wal-mart etc...) are likely lithium based greases with molybdenum additive. Commercially available MP greases are likely lithium based as well. As such, there should not be any incompatibility issues arising from switching back and forth between regular grease and moly grease. Incompatibility comes from mixing different based greases that react with each other.

So in conclusion...

I havn't found any non-biased source describing Moly's application to u-joints or non-sealed bearings in general. Lots of claiming Moly is the bee's knees, and others claiming vehemently that moly is snake oil. My conclusion is that it most certainly isn't snake oil, but might might not be necessary/the best for non-sealed bearing like in u-joints. Or maybe it is.

I just got back from an extremely wet trip to Death Valley, and after I got back I thought I had transmission issues. Thankfully it wasn't that, but what was likely was that the water I had to travel through wiped out the grease, causing a major issue in my transfer case. Thankfully it only cost me 700 (stiff, but better than a MASSIVE fix)... so I need to be able to add grease in the field, after I go through water... To prevent this in the future.

Do you have any links to a brief outline for how to do it in general? I mean the basics. I know what grease to get, and I have the diagrams, but I don't have the general background knowledge and things to keep in mind while I'm doing it. The 101-level stuff. I assume it's out there, but I thought maybe you had something, too.

Climb under your truck... it'll all be there for viewing. You'll need a grease gun (or two) with the right grease. Front driveshaft should spin easily by hand as long as you aren't in 4WD. Rear driveshaft will need one rear tire lifted and the e-brake off and trans in neutral (chock the wheels!) to spin. Pump some grease until good grease starts coming out, other than on the slip joints where you should just do a couple pumps.

Its easier than an oil change...

Hey all, so if someone can give me some wisdom, just greased my driveshaft, and when done and driving it smells burnt underneath my rig, is this normal ?

The spinning driveshaft does splatter grease all around once you start driving, perhaps some of it got onto the exhaust/muffler and is cooking :). Does it smell like Chinese food? McDonalds? Seriousness aside, if it doesn't go away soon, maybe have another look underneath.

Really good information here! I had a really bad "bump" every time I left off my brakes. After greasing my driveshaft (took a few times) it's totally gone. Finally figured out it was the driveshaft binding up when coming to a stop and then unloading when letting off.
 
Planning on doing my own lube job. It will be my first opportunity on this vehicle. Are the lube points on both the front and rear drive line the only lube points on the entire chassis Aren't there some for the suspension? If so, is there a listing/diagram of those zirk points as well?

Read post # 104, follow that Exactly.

No more lubing required other than the ignition switch, hood latch, door locks and hinges.

Greased the 8 zerk fittings on the drive shaft and my transmission clunk is gone!!! I can't believe after 18 years of owning this car the low speed transmission clunk is finally solved. My own fault for not greasing the zerks for 18 years.

This just goes to show that the dealerships really have no clue or just don't care unless they can make an easy buck. I brought this car to the dealership back in 2002-3 while the car was still under warranty to complain about the clunk thinking it was the transmission. They said it was perfectly normal.

I do have a confession to make though... I didn't use moly grease. I already had Calcium Sulfonate grease in my gun, so I just used it. I hope this doesn't destroy the joints. It is also rated NLGI GC-LB #2. I've used it for years in my boat trailer axle hubs. I guess this will be an experiment.

Did you figure out how much #6 takes? On #4 & #5 I just pumped till I seen grease coming out around the joints, but number #6 I pumped about 6 times and didn't see or felt any resistance on the grease gun. No signs of grease around the coupler and stopped because I didn't want to put to much grease in if thats a thing for this joint.

#2 and #7 I only did 3 pumps, but I sure would like to know for next time how much grease is in there so i don't over do it next time.

Anyone else please chime in if you have any answers. Thanks.

Can someone for the love of all things good please tell me how to grease #8? I cannot fit my standard coupler in there and bend it in order for it to attach to the zerk. I tried using an open ended wrench to turn it, but that didn’t work. I purchased a 90 degree coupler attachment but it won’t arrive until tomorrow. Send help!

I had to buy a gun with a hose on the end to do that one.

Would you be kind enough to send me a photo of said hose? Mine has a hose attachment but I can’t fit the coupler in there where the u-joint is.
