East Coast Gear Supply Experience?

ECGS is very highly regarded. few guys here who are capable of turning their own wrenches have even used them. I haven't ordered from them personally, but I've read nothing but good things

Everything I've heard across the web indicates they're a good outfit. On the other hand, I had a horrible experience with another widely popular outfit on the west coast and will never do business with them again. They're not a sponser hear, more popular with the land cruiser crowd. I'm also not into sliming people so I'll save any more details for private conversations. Just be aware that there are lot's of things involved here and, from my past experience, would reccomend finding a shop local to you that can warranty their work, even if if costs a little more.

Here's a link to my experience over on Ih8mud.

Who?

I've got about 60k miles on ECGS front and rear diffs, 4.56 gears and ARB for the front. No problems to date.

From the research I did, these guys do a lot of Toyota diffs and have experience with the 8.2 rear, which most shops lack, fewer reported air locker related problems, also.

Awesome. Yes, and just for clarification I'm in no way attempting to downplay ECG or anyone else for that matter. I just wanted to bring to light the risks involved in mail-order diffs.

The "other" shop I dealt with has a likewise history of producing quality land cruiser thirds per my research, hence why I choose them over a local competitor (figuring the ARB locker air lines would be routed properly, gears set up properly, etc). Furthermore, ECG sells a highly regarded needle bearing replacement bushing for Tacoma's. In general from what I've heard I'd trust their input regarding anything Toyota. How the shop I used has gotten away their practices is beyond me.

Back to the case, the biggest risk I factored in during my purchase was not having a shop local to verify/warranty the work. I took a gamble that many have done and been happy with, but in my case it failed.

Some online business's that sell swapped third members result in customers getting non-oem toyota parts and as such the overall quality of the housing received, hardware used, and precise fitment may vary. Plug-and-play fitment may not be achieved, as such permanent modification of the axle housing (grinding, filing etc), may be required. This could result in a potentially structurally compromised axle housing. Furthermore, be sure to verify the exact part numbers of products used. In my case I received knock-off Chinese housings with non-OEM hardware. This may or may not be an issue for you, but they're good questions to ask and may alter your order request. Again, how ECG manages their products is unknown, I'm just coming to you from a similar position of having ordered thirds in the mail.

Overall, the take-home message I'm getting at is that if you want to ensure absolute quality of parts and fitment, take your truck to a trusted shop that will have an upfront conversation with you, your project, and the exact parts used. Ideally they'll be willing to help out with any potential future issues as well.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Gears and lockers from ECGS here too. Super easy and they were great to work with. I called in to place my order and they walked me through all the options and the impact of a few decisions I wasn't sure on. wfo9 got his from them as well.
