I'm still a noob on the forum, so I can't start a thread, but I put this tire carrier together and thought I'd share it. I still need to drill a new hold in the steel box that goes into the receiver, as the stock hole makes it stick out further than I care for. Will be looking into new wheels and tires in the near future, so the spare is pretty janky, but working for now.. :dancin: Built this a little over a year ago for my previous vehicle (toyota sienna van) and it worked well, so thought I'd see how it works on the 4runner...

I just recently within the past week found the construction details on something like this and plan on building it in the next month or so. I this the curt tire carrier and the hinged carrier mount by chance?

Here's a link of a basic version for pretty cheap. I'm following this design but may end up adding an extender piece between the hinge and carrier to make it a little taller but we'll see. With the extension piece, it comes out to like $120 or so

It's probably illegal but you could mask where needed and PlastiDip it.

Maas Metal Polish For Clear Headlights

So easy:
Give a cursory clean of headlights, working in small areas rub on polish, wipe off with soft rag. Took me about 5 minutes. Maas has a variety but this is what I used.

(photo wasn't as clear I wanted but they look great now).

Anybody have experience mounting full size CBs to the dash? Preferably without drilling?

I'm thinking of something like a custom fabbed radio stand would be great. Wondering if anybody has done that before.

Not in/on the dash, no, but I just recently installed mine into the center console. Sits vertically, as I saw in a mod someone did. Can't remember the source. Otherwise, I do have a brake controller installed just down right of the steering column near where my right knee would be.

I've been putting a lot of consideration into dash installations over the last few days for a radar detecter, CB - which I decided against - and a touch screen - writing a installation follow-through for it now. I'm curious the route you decide to go.

Well I'm working on mine this week and hopefully finish it next week if I can get enough time outside of work to get around to it. Any suggestions for putting the assembly together? Also how close were you able to get it to the rear without hitting anything?

Alright, I will surely do that! I don't have a phone at the moment, but I can grab my brother's or dad's for pics. I have bought all the bolts, nuts, etc and so far I'm around $150 in with the hitch pivot piece, tire mount, and an 8" extender to go between the two and make it higher up. Also bought a locking pin. We won't be able to grind or drill until next weekend, but I can get a pic of everything I have so far and a rough sketch/layout. Will definitely get pics when we start work with the power tools. Be aware that I have 265/70/17 tires and with this mount, I had to get a spacer to move the spare away from the mount by a little over an inch so the tire would clear the main beam of the tire mount piece. You will need a drill and bit to go through hitch steel, a grinder, and something to cut a weld cleanly with. Lemme me hear it for some 4Runner home-cooked projects!:guitar3:

EDIT: on second thought, my tires won't be a change in width from stock so if that's what you have then you'll need some spacing as well. If you have even bigger and wider tires, then you'll end up needing more spacing than I did

Last night we were able to get a friend with a heavy duty grinder to cut the "L" off of the actual tire mount so tonight we'll get to put everything together and mark the holes for additional drilling. That stuff sure is tough to get through as it's the cold-rolled steel! Will have a picture of it pre assembled tonight to show the construction. After that, I'll have to wire up a license plate light so I don't get stopped:naughty:

I should get it all done for a total of probably under $175 when everything is all said and done. I'm eager to get it on the truck:thumb:
