"Error 3" when connecting the iPod?

I've had my Trail for almost a week now and a little more than 50% of the time when I start the car and attempt to use my 2nd gen IPod Touch through the standard USB port I get an "Error 3" prompt on the head unit. I do not have the navigation option.

I try disconnecting the Ipod, turning it off, and then plugging it back in but I still get the same error. It seems like I need to turn the truck off and re-start it to make it function again.

I looked in the manual and there weren't any references to that particular error that I could find.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I had this yesterday and fumbled with the Ipod and USB cable and it was not until I shut off stereo and restarted did things work properly again.

Check your firmware version. With the 3.0 and above update, Apple disabled any function of non genuine Apple products. I updated my touch to version 3.1.2 and it doesnt work with anything anymore. My wife's touch which hasnt been upgraded still works with everything.

I also have the same "error 3" issues in my 2010 TE without NAV. I have the 30GB ipod(I think 2nd or 3rd Gen) its black with mini album cover photos.

Anyway, sometimes it works other times you have to restart the truck. My ipod is also getting finicky in cold weather too. Anyone have less problems with the newer ones?

This looks like a fairly widespread problem. I wonder if we can file this issue with Toyota... I know, I know... It's only an iPod connectivity issue, but the 4runner is advertised with iPod Interface and we all paid extra for that option. The fact is, it doesn't work and even w/out the "error 3" issue, the song scrolling logic is a disaster.

It depends on who created the error. If it's Toyota, then they can issue a fix. If it was Apple (as indicated by 4Runner19) who made a change during a software update, then Toyota will be powerless to do much about it.

Has anyone checked the Ipod forums?

Yes, I intermittently encounter this error too. It seems that refitting the USB connection, or turning the ignition off then on works around the problem for me too.

seems that a "error 3" is a code that pops up when something is wrong with the stereo unit itself. I have had my 4 runner for about 3 months now and they are still trying to get the parts to fix this, They think it is either the USB connector itself or the cable running from the USB to the headunit, wish I could be more help but I am still waiting for them to fix mine!

Boy, this sounds like another chance for the open source, linux folks to jump in. The stuff that Apple and M$ pull off I think is illegal and is truly intentional restraint of trade.

Oh yes! Let's ignore the 92% of the world using Windows, and the 5% of the world using a Mac, and focus instead on Linux... because what Toyota really needs is a less intuitive interface than it already has. :whatever:

Struck a nerve did I? I especially agree with you on the whatever part.
So we should go on rewarding people in the IT world for making bad decisions just like cash for clunkers. Least the 4Runners wouldn't pick up viruses.
Silly of me.

Been around the various O/S for years. It is comical how we have allowed the Jobs and Gates (who never did anything original in his life) rob us.

My only point was that the software companies do little for my confidence in them when they make things worse by purposely eliminating competition and taking steps backwards. It makes you think twice before upgrading software and firmware. Usually these days it is better to wait and let Mikey try it. See if he likes it. Then proceed with caution. I could care less what O/S is used.

You didn't strike a nerve, you put forth a completely irrelevant argument based on your worldview rather than based on what people are actually going to use. The majority of the people buying Toyota vehicles are windows or apple owners, and the majority of those people who own a mp3 player are going to use some version of an iPod. Toyota, in offering a feature that the majority of it's customers are going to use, is going to use the SDKs for the most popular players. Linux doesn't even enter into the equation and would make things clunkier rather than smoother.

Linus worship has it's place, but I don't think a T4Rforum fits that description.

On a somewhat related note, for those without Nav in their 2010's, there is supposed to be 8 speakers with the mid line system correct? I have the stereo with XM and Bluetooth and figured the rear doors would have speakers, but mine I believe are empty? I count 2 on the dash, 1 in each front door and 2 in the rear hatch, what am I missing?

Thanks.

Not wanting to stray from the Error issue, howeevr, I did run out to my T4R (I have the XM/Ipod/8 Speaker system) - Two on the dash, two front, two 2nd row, and two on the back hatch - hope it helps.

Now back to the show!

Thanks, but did you verify the 2 in the rear doors(not hatch) actually play? I am wondering if either mine are not working or they are empty?

Sorry to be off topic guys.

^^^^^Problem solved. Someone must have hit the Party mode button which I just found out kills the rear door speakers and only powers the front 4 and rear hatch. Oops, oh well:lol:
