Well, it's been a busy couple weeks. 1 planned mod, 2 unplanned mods...
First, a few weeks ago on my way home from Big Bend (10 hours) my alternator quits about an hour into the trip... SHIT! This was a 3 month old high amp unit from Quality Power Auto! I won't go into the details, but suffice to say that I do not recommend buying from them. To solve the problem I ordered 250a XP unit from DC power. It was a lot of money, but I don't want to do this again and their quality appears to be unsurpassed. This install was a beating. Took about 4 hours and required some some bashed knuckles and many curse words, but after figuring out all the tricks I think I could do it again in 2 hours or less.
Here is the Quality Power "320a" unit ($500) vs the bigger better DC Power 250a unit ($600).
Next, my new CBI bumper came in! I tackled it solo Friday after work. Only took about an hour to swap out. The side hoops and my roof rack help exponentially. Otherwise I would have needed extra hands. I had him fill the sides instead of the normal channel just because I don't care for that look. I also added the hoops for tree protection when the back end jumps around going up hill. Finally, I didn't get the swing arm, but had it built for one and he included the hinge and latch so I can have one built to my specs locally.
I was so excited about the new bumper I jumped in with some friends to head out to the Northwest OHV Park in Bridgeport, TX. It was a great day and the added clearance of the bumper was awesome. I pushed the limits of the 4runner and climbed stuff that gave the rear locked Tacoma and Ranger with me a lot of problems. The 35" tires and A-Trac are a HUGE asset. I'll post some video soon.
Unfortunately, towards the end of the day we had done all the main trails that were within our capabilities and were just jacking around trying to climb some really short steep hills. There was one that none of us could make and I decided to give it several attempts in a row. Once, twice, thee, four, fi.... "BRKZZZZZZZZZZ" What the F was that noise? I rolled down backwards and examine, roll it forward, POP, POP, POP! Long story short, I shattered the rear ring and pinion. We pulled the rear drive shaft, curious if it would limit the amount of grinding... Nope.
Then it was off to U-Haul to get a dolly. I had to lock the center diff and drive it out of about 200 yards of dips really slow with binding and popping every 5-10 feet. It was so hard to listen to, but the only way out. Then we loaded it up and pulled the front drive shaft to tow. Moments after getting all loaded and rolling, the sky opened up and I felt so lucky it was all done. It took a couple hours to get home driving slow, but we made it. The first time I've ever winched my truck was into my own driveway! lol
Today I spent about 6 hours pulling both diffs (my first time ever doing either). I figure it's time to re-gear since I have to do one anyway. Looks like I might be taking this opportunity to lock the rear as well. More photos and video to come!
