Fedrlbiker Build Thread

Hey man, I think I saw your rig this morning on my way to work. It looked a little different as I believe the tail lights and headlights were tinted, but gotta say your rig looks good.
Makes me miss my 3rd gen I had.

Keep up the nice mods.

Well, I took the scary plunge yesterday... 315/70 r17's! My 33's were still looking good and the wife wanted new wheels and tires for her Jeep so I moved my 285's over and upgraded my rig!

Here are a couple comparison shots to give an idea of the tire size change...

And... if you notice in the picture above, I eliminated the resonator and installed a Flowmaster Series 44 a few weeks ago. Finally I don't have that big rock finder hanging off under the bumper!

Almost forgot... Summer is in full effect here in Texas and I was doing some work in my truck sitting in a parking lot when the A/C started warming up. I looked at my Scanguage and saw my Air Intake temperature at over 210*! I decided to pull the plastic plug out of the hood scoop to allow better venting. I plan to put the same mesh in as my Satoshi, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have noticed that my intake temp now stays within 20* of the ambient temperature now though and you can watch the hot air escape through the hood scoop when parked. The air intake also seems to run about 10* cooler on the road.

Finally, I ordered the Toytec 3/4" top plate spacers and diff drop to add to my front lift. I did receive a warning from Toytec saying that it was not recommended with my OME lift, but me and the head mechanic at 4Wheel Parts looked at my CV Axles and they are not at a harsh angle as is without a diff drop. Therefore, adding a 1" diff drop should allow for 3/4" more lift from the spacers without causing any issues. This will give me just a touch more clearance for the 35's on full lock. That, and the fact that I'll be chopping the hell out of my body mounts and sliders this weekend!

Wow, that's a big jump! Looks great, how are they so far? Were you well prepared lift & trimming wise?

edit- missed the last part about the extra spacer and bmc.

Holy sh!t, with them tires and increased lift, definitely getting her UP THERE.

So after awhile of driving with that tire size, can you feel a sizable difference in power pushing them tires? I could feel, and tell the difference going from stock to wanabies 32's on stock gears. V-6 also, rpms go a little higher when shifting through the gears.

I do like the look and improvement, great job there.

It hasn't hurt it a ton. Mileage is worse for sure, but it still has power. I will regear when I do a rear locker though. I actually planned to go to 35's later after other modifications, but I couldn't bare to buy new 33" tires for the jeep when I knew I ha good ones I wanted to upgrade already.

I also had to remove my Spidertrax for more clearance. They cause the turning radius to be wider and hit the slider. Removing them allowed the wheel to turn completely. I'll be chopping about an inch off the slider and trimming the body mount as much as possible.

The ride quality is really nice on road. Even smoother than the 33's minus the mud hum. However, the combination of removing spacers, increasing height, and adding mud tread gives it a little float in the steering. Nothing bad, but it definitely has a more sluggish reaction if you rock the wheel side to side going down the highway. Too be expected though.

Alright, so today was the big trim. I took off quite a bit to give plenty of extra clearance. I will reinforce with new plates later this week, but I want to give it a couple days to make sure I don't want to trim more...

In addition, I have the Light Racing UCA's and when I install the new Toytec top spacers, I'm going to rotate them all the way forward to give more clearance at the rear edge of the tire.

Also installed new slotted and drilled rotors and semi-metallic pads today from BrakePerformance.com

So, this is your trimming to fit the 33" I presume. Just getting an idea if deciding to go up in size on tires again. Looks like you had to take some body out of it also.

Actually no... I trimmed the rear fender for the 35's right after installing them. For 33's I didn't have to trim body. I did chop the little stub on the body mount previously though.

just read through entire thread. great looking rig. i think your idea of PD'ing the roof to protect it is GENIUS! :first:

Just some pics from our Toyota Trail Riders trip to Tolar Offroad Park this weekend. Great time if not a little sketchy at times due to such narrow trails! I didn't do a good job of documenting any of the significant obstacles since I was busy driving, but my passenger and I did get some.

I may have missed it, but in your first post where you kept track of your parts you listed your rack as a perkins... did you end up going with them? and how was your experience? I live very close to them and would have less of a hassle getting them to fix something, and I like not having to pay for shipping...

It's been a while, but I wanted to post a new mod. I just got a Viair 2001 onboard air system. There is a lot more work to do, but I installed the pump on the passenger wheel wheel this evening.

I looked and looked for a good location and was originally planning to put it in the spare tire area with the air tank, but I was worried about water and elements.

The challenge to fitting the pump where I did is that the power steering reservoir and air box don't have enough space between them. The solution I came up with was cutting the third leg off the reservoir bracket and trimming it all down to clear the pump. the plastic body might rub the pump when activated, but it has about an 1/8" clearance when stationary.

Second, the pump intake fitting was then so close to the body that I could not route the filter air line. My solution was to cut a hole in fender wall and run the line into the fender and back through the air box intake. This places the pump filter in the driest safest place I could imagine (other than the cab).

Anyway, still trying to figure out where to put the switch and other pieces, but I'll be building some type of mount to put the air tank in the spare tire area.

Looking great! How do you like those OME front struts?

They are fine. Nothing special really. I will upgrade the suspension one day, but for now I have other things I'd rather spend money on. My CBI rear bumper will be in next week so that will soften the ride of the back end.

Well, it's been a busy couple weeks. 1 planned mod, 2 unplanned mods...

First, a few weeks ago on my way home from Big Bend (10 hours) my alternator quits about an hour into the trip... SHIT! This was a 3 month old high amp unit from Quality Power Auto! I won't go into the details, but suffice to say that I do not recommend buying from them. To solve the problem I ordered 250a XP unit from DC power. It was a lot of money, but I don't want to do this again and their quality appears to be unsurpassed. This install was a beating. Took about 4 hours and required some some bashed knuckles and many curse words, but after figuring out all the tricks I think I could do it again in 2 hours or less.

Here is the Quality Power "320a" unit ($500) vs the bigger better DC Power 250a unit ($600).

Next, my new CBI bumper came in! I tackled it solo Friday after work. Only took about an hour to swap out. The side hoops and my roof rack help exponentially. Otherwise I would have needed extra hands. I had him fill the sides instead of the normal channel just because I don't care for that look. I also added the hoops for tree protection when the back end jumps around going up hill. Finally, I didn't get the swing arm, but had it built for one and he included the hinge and latch so I can have one built to my specs locally.

I was so excited about the new bumper I jumped in with some friends to head out to the Northwest OHV Park in Bridgeport, TX. It was a great day and the added clearance of the bumper was awesome. I pushed the limits of the 4runner and climbed stuff that gave the rear locked Tacoma and Ranger with me a lot of problems. The 35" tires and A-Trac are a HUGE asset. I'll post some video soon.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the day we had done all the main trails that were within our capabilities and were just jacking around trying to climb some really short steep hills. There was one that none of us could make and I decided to give it several attempts in a row. Once, twice, thee, four, fi.... "BRKZZZZZZZZZZ" What the F was that noise? I rolled down backwards and examine, roll it forward, POP, POP, POP! Long story short, I shattered the rear ring and pinion. We pulled the rear drive shaft, curious if it would limit the amount of grinding... Nope.

Then it was off to U-Haul to get a dolly. I had to lock the center diff and drive it out of about 200 yards of dips really slow with binding and popping every 5-10 feet. It was so hard to listen to, but the only way out. Then we loaded it up and pulled the front drive shaft to tow. Moments after getting all loaded and rolling, the sky opened up and I felt so lucky it was all done. It took a couple hours to get home driving slow, but we made it. The first time I've ever winched my truck was into my own driveway! lol

Today I spent about 6 hours pulling both diffs (my first time ever doing either). I figure it's time to re-gear since I have to do one anyway. Looks like I might be taking this opportunity to lock the rear as well. More photos and video to come!

That is a recessed port for my on board air system. I am mounting a viair tank in the spare tire location and will hook up to it through the bumper. It's a 2" square so that a standard receiver plug hides it perfect.

The rear is an 8".

The new bumper looks sweet!

I saw that first picture of your truck being towed on FB earlier, sad news.. Good luck with, at least it gives you a good reason to regear and possibly lock!
