As some of you know, I've relocated from my hometown, 8hours North to a small town called Hearst, Ontario. The move was made, so I could acquire employment with CN Rail, as a Track Forman, and get off of Employment Insurance, after being laid off from my Security job for the 2nd time in less than 2 years.

I've posted pics from the new job in my build thread, but figured I might make a separate thread for them here. :)

Here's some old ones....

My "home away from home"....



An old decommissioned coal chute.... in one of our work sites...



Our mascot! He's always around the bunkhouse, and we can hand feed him! He's got a messed up mouth... so we call him Chretien (Former Prime Minister of Canada... he had a crooked mouth... lol).



Up close and personal with a freight train going 60mph...



We call this a "Clam"... it's a tool that we add to our backhoe, and use it to pick up ties, and do other work...



What remains of the old train town we live in.... people still camp in these houses.... but population is less than 10 people now...



After a day of shoveling snow out of the track switches.... my pants became solid pieces of ice! :D

Nice pictures! There certainly isn't much in the way of civilization up in that area. How are your tires coping with the white stuff up there?
 
After your last post concerning the lack of a porta potty in the local area, I expected to see pics of lots of toilet paper when I read the title of this thread.

It seems desolate up there, not much in the way of life other than the fox. I guess the wife and kids have free roam of the house then. But since $$$ does not grow on trees, make the most of it.

I have come up with a solution for my toilet issues.... I'll post pics of my setup next week... :D

As for wildlife.... lots out here. I've seen a wolf, a white weasel, rabbits, tons of partridge, almost hit a moose last Sunday Monday, seen a Lynx, and many crows.... :D

We feed the fox and the crows daily.... so I have many pics of those 2 creatures... lol!

Wife and kids have full roam of the new house and even the quad... my entertainment in Oba, consists of watching my old DVD's... ;)

Remote isolation can make for some epic wildlife/nature moments that you will never get anywhere else. There is just nothing like standing face to face with a wolf for example! There is much beauty to be found and much use to be found for a 4x4.
 
We've had some close encounters that's for sure... that fox I keep taking pictures of... has become a fixture at our bunkhouse... we feed him by hand daily. :) The wolf was several hundred feet away... but was still cool to see! The white weasel was cool.... darn thing was just hopping through the snow and lingered around us for a few minutes. :D

I was flipping through my Facebook pics... and found this pic... it's my entertainment setup for my room....



I was watching some old Star Trek movies that day.... :) As for the system... nothing special... just a 5disc Surround Sound system, with Aux port... I can play music off my phone with it too.... :) My room is rather small... so don't have much room for extras. :D
 
Im a student conductor for UPRR. The railroad is a crazy thing... really seems to consume your life (and Im not even on the extra-board yet) but seems like a great career, and like all these salty union dudes are for better or worse, a family.

Catch a pic of the lynx if you can.

Down in the Southern USA its cousin the Bobcat roams. I have had several sightings of them as well as a few encounters. I have even seen a Cougar as well, and have heard many.
 
Man.. It takes guts to move for work.. Although the old startrek movie looks depressing sorry..

I told my wife Ill go where work takes me and if its good to provide for our family its all that matters..

Its expensive living here in CA bay area. I with I can make the same pay in other places around the country. Id be well off.

Thanks man.... Not a Star Trek fan??? lol! I have a soft spot for the classics! lol! I also like the old Rocky movies and the Rambo.. :D

Moving was a huge thing for me. I always said I'd never move away from my family for work.... and here I am... 8hrs North of my hometown. It's been good though... I'm making really good money, and living for 1/2 the cost of living back home! My mortgage is much lower, and my I spend half the gas I used to, because I only drive back and forth to work once a week. My 4Runner will get even less seat time than it already gets! lol!

BTW, not sure if anyone noticed on my build thread... but I posted a Mileage report recently..... looking back in my build thread, I found another post I made over a year ago... turns out in 14months, I've driven my 4Runner only 12000kms! :D At this rate... I'll have my old girl forever! :)
 
More pics from this week!

As some of you know, metal is forever changing size, when temperatures vary. Those of you who don't know.... when it's hot outside..... metal expands, when it's cold... it contracts.

This is what happens to a train track, when it's -38*C....



^ This is what we call a pull-apart.... the track shrunk, and pulled apart at a joint, over 4 inches! Sometimes, a gap like this can get up to 12" long! To solve this, we had to cut out the piece of rail, and add a longer piece. Come summer... we'll have to put a shorter piece in there again... :D

Also.... this is what happens when you place a couple of guys in a bunkhouse, in the middle of nowhere, with nothing else better to do...



^ One of my coworkers, decided to make himself a lap table, so he can eat his supper in his bed... :D

I've seen both bobcats and mountain lions in the northern Dallas suburbs
