It looks like Mother Nature is putting Fightman in his place. That is some cold weather.

When my uncle was in Toronto and Montreal years ago he carried 20lbs of kitty litter in his car during the winter months. You may have needed more.

Get the exhaust fixed?

Not yet.... been working on renos in the new house on my days off....

Had to buy a new portable compressor and brad nail gun, as well as one of these...



So that I could fix up our house, and make a proper bedroom for the wife

The plan is to go into town tomorrow... and make some inquiries at the Canadian Tire, to see about the Magnaflow 18" model :)

Who are you, Doctor Doolittle?! That's awesome! I read through your build thread again, very cool Fightman :thumb3:
However, I'm not a big fan of the vehicle your in while feeding the bird. Did it break down and you decided to pull out the bird feed? I kid, I kid. :)

It's not my favorite either.... damn thing has been nothing but trouble.... We constantly keep the truck idling, and as a result, the diesel emissions control stuff, gives us a ton of problems. :/

Glad I drive my Yotas! :)
 
On today's episode of "Another week in Oba" :D



While driving down the bush road to get back to our bunkhouse... we saw something suspicious in a tree....





Somebody poached a moose, and then staked it's head on a tree.... :confused:

Also... Chretien came over for another snack... :)



Pretty decent week at work.... got a few hours of O/T, one step closer to lifting my Tacoma! :)
 
That act of poaching is interesting; most hunters I know who hunt for sport prize the head for show, not leave it in the woods and just take the body. Even pure hunters would have taken the head. Could it have been hit by a train? In the Southern US I have probably seen two dozen white tail deer hit by trains in 30 years.

That is a big bird in the tree in the last pic.
 
Out here, alot of people just poach for the meat. Moose season has been over for approximately a month now... but the moose seem to come out in the open alot more now, so hunters will hunt them illegally. I don't think it's possible that the moose was hit by one of our trains, because we would have heard about it, as it was on our territory.

As for the "Big bird", it's a raven... :)

Must have gotten hit by a train.... As a joke, one of the guys suggested we place him on the hood of our work truck, as a "Redneck Hood Ornament":D



Here's one of the buildings that house the controls for one of our power switches. They tend to get really not inside, thus the reason for the Air Conditioner... :)

Overall, a decent week at work.... but happy to be home with my girls! :)

 
The ladies in waiting make that barren drive home seem more bearable for sure I'll bet.

I would think some engineer would have come up with a way to vent that building instead of relying on an AC unit. For some big boats here on the East Coast (think yachts) that sit moored at a dock in order to cool the engine compartments, they now use a 12v actuator powered by a small solar panel based upon engine compartment temp. Saves $$$ over a year's time.
 
You would think so... however, Railroading has not really evolved as much as you'd think. The engines themselves, are pretty neat to see, but track and signals, is pretty basic stuff. After all, it's mostly low voltage circuits running those signals. Switch heaters are run off of propane, with only a electrical ignition source!

That being said, track inspection technology is pretty evolved, with Sperry cars sending signals into the rail material, it can detect a defect that is not even visible to the naked eye. :D
 
How do you know the moose was poached? I'm sure things don't rot too fast at this time of year!

Do you have a block heater on your 4runner? Mine wouldn't start when I left it outside one day this week and it was only -30!
 
The moose was poached, because it was on a Wild Life Reserve.... :D My 4Runner does have a block heater, but I usually don't plug it in. I've had it start for me, when it was -35*C.... Meanwhile, my Tacoma and Quad wouldn't start... ;)

Wildlife reserve! Well yeah, I guess it was poached then, or maybe some wolves are trying to send a message :p

Clearly I'm doing something wrong! I solved the problem by parking it in the garage which apparently makes a bigger difference than I thought. (unheated, but I guess the windbreak is enough)
 
It certainly is beautiful there.... but is pretty much in the middle of nowhere... lol! If you breakdown, or get stuck.... you're pretty much guaranteed to be there for quite a long time... ;)
 
Well, I'm a day early to post my stuff from Oba. That's because I've been working with a Welding Foreman this week, and have been able to drive home every night! It's only temporary, as he is in need of a helper this week, because he got a promotion into a department. In the meantime however.... I'm enjoying a break from my regular work, and have been learning a few new things, about welding on the railroad, and listening to a crap load of Reggae and Tupac music! :D

Here's my partner in crime, welding an intersecting rail section... we call them frogs.... :D



After years of use, they get battered and crack. His job, is to grind out the bad stuff, weld in some new material, and then grind it all smooth. :) The finished product, looks like this:



Tool of the trade.... a Miller "Big Blue"



In order to weld rail in the winter time, the rail must be preheated to 700*F. In order to achieve this... he uses a propane heater, which basically looks like an attachement for a Tiger Torch setup....



I'm learning alot of cool stuff with this job.... and almost thinking about bidding for a welder job, instead of keeping this Section Foreman gig! :D
