Filling gas tank triggers nozzle shut off

I have a 2002 and lately when I try to fill up the gas station hose auto shuts off/trips every 2 seconds! I have to go soooooo slow it takes 30 minutes to fill up! AHHHHHHH!!!!

I read a few posts... sounds like it's either a plugged evap canister? or a plugged upper filler tube line?

Just wondering if any has seen this particular problem so I don't go replacing parts needlessly...at first. :dammit:

My wifes Honda Accord did this! There was a sensor that shut some gas valve and it caused all kinds of stuff!

Mine does the same thing.

Just dont put the nozzle all the way in the hole, leave it out about half way.

Someone told me one time that if you push that rubber collar at the base of the nozzle tube, too far up against the fuel door (basically if you push the nozzle too far in), it creates a sort of "sloppy seal", and doesn't allow proper air flow to compensate for the gas. He suggested pulling the nozzle back out about 1/2 inch. I remember my step mom was having this issue with her '95 grand voyager, and once i started remembering this (and doing it), I never had the problem again.
Could be completely wrong about this though...

i've got an '02 and mine does the same thing. i can go to wal-mart and know exactly which pump will trigger it. one might trigger it and the one next to it will be fine. if i ever have one that triggers it i just pump it slower and take the nozzle out a little bit. i don't think it's your truck though i think the pumps do it. my buddy has a jeep wrangler and his 'ell do it on the same pumps that mine does.

The trick is flipping the handle/nozzle upside down and fueling it that way. Sounds crazy but used to work on my buddies QX4 when he had that problem.

Agreed. It is a pressure issue. Once there's airflow you will be fine.

I haven't even looked to see if our 4Runners have them or not, but on a Ford my inlaws have is a spring loaded metal flap that pushes out of the way with the nozzle. I assume it is there to help keep people from stealing gas, but in any case somebody tried to do just that and broke it off in their Ford. So the flapper fell into the filler neck and now it takes her forever to fill it up. Just something to check into.

i think i remember reading that the Toyota used the same filler tube for the 4runner that they used for the Tacoma. this created an air issue inside the gas tank while filling with gas. IIRC, the taco tube is too long for our 4runners and creates an air pocket inside tank.. the air is not able to escape properly and in turn creates the auto-shut-off issue. makes perfect sense. and mine has done it since the day i bought it. also, i think that it was established to be BAD to fill up too much due to a carbon filter thing.....not sure, but something i remember. ill try to find a link to the post.

Any luck solving the problem? My 01' 4runner is doing the same thing. Doesn't matter what I do or where I go. Maybe it could be a clogged breather tube or something.

same topic, off subject, went to the gas station/mcds today to fill up on my way out of town, turned on the pump, went and ordered, came back out, 10 gallons had filled shut off the pump for 10 seconds, sat in my truck and ate, 2 mins later it finally was full.. 32.5 gallons.

and yes turning the handle upsidedown on some pumps helps
