Finally, a real competitor in 2017

I know this is not exactly 5th gen related, but I think it is very relevant since this vehicle will most likely be the only truck that future 5th gen buyers consider.

GM finally came out with something to shake up the off-road market and I hope Toyota will respond with something besides the same old appearance packages.

This truck has a lot going for it.

* 4cyl diesel 181hp/369tq (31mpg hwy) or 308hp/275tq v6
* Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) shocks - these are super high tech and tuned for extreme offroad with good road manners
* front and rear e-lockers, locking center (9 4wd modes) including locked rear in 2wd High
* 8 speed auto (should provide a great crawl ratio in 4L)
* high clearance,(10.3" ground clearance from the factory)
* 3.5-inch wider track and 2-inch lift, high strength front control arms
* Improved approach and departure angle
* 31" GYr Duratrack on 17" wheels std
* full skids and sliders from the factory

This truck is the real deal when it comes to off-road and overlanding. It will give many future Toyota 4runner and Tocoma buyers great pause. I know I will be checking them out.

If the manufacturing quality is there - these might just give Toyota pause. Depending on price of course. My guess is its going to run north of $50k for a diesel. ($10K buys a lot of gas - about 100,000 miles worth). Checks all the boxes except tire size. I'm curious about the axle designs and strength though.

Seems more a competitor to the Tacoma, the article refers to the Tacoma TRD.

I do not think it is competition with the 4runner, in general, because the 4runner is an SUV. Also, the 4runner's reliability and longevity (maybe add safety?) is almost legendary, and attracts buyers (like myself).

But it is pretty cool little truck, like a small Raptor. I really wish this is what Toyota came out with as their TRD, a Raptor like deviation from the non-TRD line.

Over all it's great for everyone. The manufacturers are starting to battle for this
Offroad market and that means bigger and better things for the consumer.

Just for putting Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs as stock tires they get points with me even if I will never ever buy a Chevrolet.....

Toyota stop putting cheapass tires on 50k truck's you cheapass bastards lol

Ps: still waiting on the 2k18 new motor 4Runner.....

Yes it is more aligned with the the Tacoma, but many 5th gen owners (including myself) considered a Tacoma. I was actually looking for a Tacoma, but switched to a 4Runner because the used Tacomas were way overpriced for what you got compared to a 5th gen in 2013.

And yes, Toyota's have outstanding reliability and a good track record, but the other brands are catching up quickly.

The point is that many people here (not all) buy a 5th gen for over-landing and general off-road use. The top overland vehicles at the moment in the US are the 4runner, Wrangler, and Tacoma There is really nothing else in the segment and this zr2 is going to really shake things up.

I personally can't wait to check one out.

I've been burned three times by GM products with less than 1,500 miles on the clock. I will enjoy seeing these in other people's hands. Pretty much like brodozers. Cool to see a huge full size truck lifted feet rather than inches. Not in my front yard.

No pause given here, just something to check out at stoplights. Maybe if it pushes Toyota to come out with something 'badder', but I'm a pig in poop with my modern dinosaur 4Runner.

Not a family man's ride. Me, wife 2 boys and a dog. Not as suitable as an suv for a family. Sounds good except the Chevrolet part.

It does have factory sliders. I'll be taking a look at this this weekend, I'll be checking out the LA Auto show.

I wonder if the spare tire in the bed is the plan for production? Seems like a total waste of space in a daily driver...

After my last GM truck - never again will a GM product ever park in my driveway. But I like the direction. I'd love to see a Toyota OEM long travel setup. Then again i'd be happy with a Prado 150 with a 1FTV or a LC76 with the 1FTV.

Weak link on H2, H3 and other "specialty offroad builds" have been the tie rods. See if you can't get a pick of them on this truck when you see it. Hopefully they're bigger than the Caprice sized tie rods they use on their so-called 1T Duramax 4x4 front ends.

New or very slightly used (with less than 1500 mi)?

Just curious....I'm definitely not a Chevy fan (though their LSX engines are pretty good).

I agree with a lot of the sentiments in this thread....

In full disclosure, I'm a long way from ever owning a GM product. We've had Silverados in my family for a long time and the last two have both had the dreaded 5.3L V8 rod snapping problem around 100k.... right out of warranty. GM's interiors are still among the worst in the business, and that's a big problem for me, too.

BUT - GM has played to win with the Colorado and Canyon, and Toyota should quite frankly be afraid. A year into production, they up the engine to a new 308hp V6 with an 8AT and tons of new fuel saving technology. They did the diesel. Now they are going after TRD PRO with this truck.

Toyota has been very behind in engine technology for a very long time, and fierce competition like we have here is only a good thing. Toyota needs to have a 300+hp 8AT powertrain planned for the 2018 4Runner and Tacoma refresh because everyone else is quite literally passing them by.

If the rumors are true and Ford brings back the Ranger, and potentially does an SVT version like the Raptor, Tacoma TRD Pro will be outed for the appearance package/trim level that it truly is. Something like this ZR2 or a theoretical SVT Ranger are more dedicated efforts for hardcore enthusiasts.

I agree. We all benefit from competition like this IF Toyota can play the game AND keep up.

Tarded GM diesel is tarded.

I've heard they are sluggish in stock form but I haven't driven one yet. I went a few months ago to check one out but they didn't have any diesels or anything worth wasting time over so I left. I do believe there is a fair amount of potential with lil Dmax.

This is a gripe of mine as well. The TRDP package for both Tundra and Tacomas come with lame tires. Toyota needs to get with the program on this. The other issue is their allocation system. For $40k+, I should be able to get exactly what I want, not just "close enough ".

I wouldn't be surprised if the Tacoma 3.5 ends up in the 4runner for 2018.

I wonder if the spare tire in the bed is the plan for production? Seems like a total waste of space in a daily driver...

I agree, total waste of space but they need to put it there because the DEF tank is where the spare usually goes. Easy fix would be a high-clearance rear bumper with a swing out tire carrier.

Yeah, definitely a weak link but the aftermarket responded a there's a few options on how to correct this. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this ZR2 uses the same tierods.

I'm also a fan of the LS engines and the endless aftermarket support for them. I've had good luck with them.

I love my Toyotas but FWIW, I've also have had very good luck with my chevy trucks (not so much with their cars though).

My hope is that Toyota sees this and responds by raising the bar.

My issues with GM are
Transfer case failures. Basically every HD2500/3500 from a 10 year period will have a transfer case oil pump failure and blow apart or seize. GM did NOTHING to fix this.

Allison 1000 - lasted 80k miles. $5,000 for a rebuilt one. Give me a Toyota 4 speed automatic any day over a GM 15 speed auto. I don't like walking.

Oil burning. 1-3 quarter per oil change is not "normal" even for my old 2F.

Put oil in the front differential. GM never filled the front diff - it grenaded at around 15k miles. Never had a drop of oil in it.

Sensors - cheap sensors like a crank position sensor that last less than 100k miles and are mounted in the fu$^%(ing bell housing (why GM? Why would you put a crank position sensor on the back of the engine!?!?!?).

The list is long. That's just a short version. On paper I like everything about the new Canyon. If I could buy a Tacoma with the spec sheet of that truck - I'd probably be trading my 4runner tomorrow. Maybe GM has stepped up its game? I genuinely hope they have. I'm not ready to be a guinea pig yet.

Not that I do such stuff myself, but you won't catch me dragging that rig so far out of cell phone coverage.

*This will be very popular at the local mud pits, I'm guessing, which is probably the target audience
