Fitment/Rubbing Questions

Currently waiting on a ToyTec Boss suspension with light racing UCAs to arrive. I have searched and used the tire fitment/rub guide...but there seems to be differing opinions on the matter of tire fitment and rubbing. So here are my questions.

1. Why are people running spacers? Just for wider looks?

2. Will I have rubbing issues if I run the stock wheel and only go up to a 275/70/17 without spacers? What about 285s?

This will be an overland rig so I want to get this right. (Install and forget it)

I'm confused because the chart says that tire size I want will fit (275s but not 285s)...but have seen some say that the lift will cause rubbing regardless. I don't see how. I appreciated the help ahead of time.

I didn't have any rubbing with 285's and lift, but the Tera Nitto isn't as aggressive tread as other A/T's

Will spacers increase my chances of rubbing?

Ain't no increase about it! I added the Spydertrax 1.25" spacers on all 4 corners with 265/70's. HAD to trim the front fender and mudflaps. No ifs, ands or buts. If you run 275 or 285's and spacers the question will be will you need to also do a front body mount chop?

Keep in mind we don't know the wheels he's using, the backspace or offset. Like the chart says there's 100's of variables once you move from stock.

If a tire size is coded "yellow" or "red" you could:
Have to lift the vehicle
Have to install aftermarket UCA's
Have to do a Body Mount Chop
Have to move the inner fender liner
Have to trim the front bumper cover
Have to remove the mud flaps
Have to do nothing.

Every vehicle is slightly different and every tire brand and type of tire is a bit different dimensionally. If you use a wheel with a different backspace than stock then that opens up a whole world of problems...or solutions.

If you run the size you want you might have to do every single thing on that list or maybe just a combination of a few. If you ask someone what they did that is running the exact same tire their answer could be different than what you have to do because their caster setting was different than yours was originally.

Bottom line: If you want to change tire size and run different wheels then be prepared to do all or some of the modifications I listed above. If you are not prepared to do those mods then pick a tire size that is "green" and don't change wheel offsets AND DO NOT ADD SPACERS. If you do not understand offset and backspacing then use the links in the post to understand these terms.

So those that are running 275 or 285 widths, are OEM fender flares enough or do you have quite a bit more mud/rock kick up?

It really depends on what you finally end up with for a setup. I run a wider wheel with a negative offset and 285s with out front mud flaps. The tires stick out some and shit goes everywhere. Your best bet is to figure out your needs / wants and do some research on the great builds and threads where all of this stuff is covered at great length. Then ask more specific questions rather instead of looking for a one size fits all answer.

Edit: And as far as I know, everyone here is currently running OEM flares.

I am running 265/70/17 BFG AT KO's with OEM TRD Pro wheel AND Spidertraxx 1.25" Spacers.
I rub on full turn on front fender and mudflap, but barely. Once I do fender mod, I should be fine... I hope.

Hope this helps you out. If I did not have spacers, I probably would not rub but barely on mudflap, if any..

The Stif-Meister must not be awake yet!

I have about a 2.5" lift and camber set at about 3 with LR UCAs.
I have 285/70/17 duratracs on the stock sr5 wheels with no spacers.

I have removed that piece of plastic that covers the body mount and used a heat gun to push forward the front plastic liner a little bit.

No rubbing at all now.
