For the 2wd guys: Put a 4wd auto shift handle on

First off, thanks to DeathCougar for the parts! Ok guys so I know that maybe it seems like a silly mod, but its something I have always wanted to do. Did a ton of searches about trying this on all the relevant forums and found nada. Looked like it would be swapping a couple screws and a spring or two, easy right. NOPE. 2 hours later, and a bunch of work and VOILA! Had to cut 50mm off my stock shifter and its interior parts, tap some new mounting holes, re-thread the pushrod, shorten the trigger spring, and rewire the O/D button. So if anyone had this in mind BE AWARE its kind of a PITA. Turned out really cool though and it looks like it came from the factory this way.

I guess I'm confused because I expected to see a 4HI/LO shifted added. What exactly did you do? I have never actually been inside of a 2WD 4Runner so i don't get it.

The actual shift knob is different, kinda big and ugly.

I tried doing this once years ago. I didn't get it to work as well because I didn't do any modifications. Looks good to finally see it done. Swapped a 5-speed a couple years ago so that never had a chance to materialize again.

I still have that 4WD shifter and I'm going to try to fashion it into my girlfriends 99 Limited. Thanks for the inspiration.

Not faking a 4wd by any means. As Mike&Ike said the OEM 2wd shifter is huge and clunky. If my intent was to fake a 4wd, I certainly could have mounted the tcase shifter along side.....

My 01 Tacoma Prerunner had the same lever. It was also 2wd. It also had 4 stationary cupholders.

The 2nd pic I posted is what they look like on the 96-98 (2wd's at least). I pulled the pic off eBay, that dirty shifter's not mine!

nice job, that looks way better than the giant bobblehead that comes in the 2wd. if you can do all of that, then a 4x4 swap should be a cake walk...

I was actually thinking about swapping to the 2WD style handle. I always liked resting my hand on top.

I couldn't think of a feasible way to do it without me getting really angry. So I'm sticking with the stick style shifter. :rofl:

To go the opposite way I think it would only require the swapping of a couple screws and springs. Reason I had to cut the stock 2wd shaft is because the 4wd handle is taller. Would have hit my dash.

I have a 2wd, I bought it to use as a DD for the next year or so. I plan on turning it into a rock crawler at some point.

I will eventually use a 4wd shifter and move it over to make room for transfer case shifters.

Right now this is all talk, but I get excited seeing pictures of mods like this. Makes me want to make some money so I can buy ANOTHER 3rd gen and get started with my build!
