For those who've done the 231 TBU...

So I finished the install of the new setup yesterday. Followed Speedys videos, and looked through BFADs thread. Everything went smoothly, no problems.
I greased the back of the pads, the caliper pins and everywhere else I can think to grease.
Problem is, I squeal like a damn banshee gong down the road. I can hear the pads rubbing the rotors, and it will occasionally screech. Not sure if the pads are just extra thick right now and they need to wear a bit...anyone else have this problem?

I checked the pistons, they're moving like they should, nothing is scratching on the rotors, took the pads out and repositioned them..no gouges on them.

Maybe I just need to drive a bit more? I've gone roughly 45 miles on them so far...not any better. I have done the bedding process already too. They stop great...just sound like this going down the road...

check the backing plate. make sure it didn't get bent, and is rubbing on the rotor.

the pads shouldn't be making noise while driving. they will sometimes squeak during braking, that is "normal".

i agreee, check the dust shield, mine was rubbing at first and i didn't notice it until i put the truck in drive.
i simply didnt cut enough away nor bend it enough to clean the new oversize rotor.

What pad manufacturer? I had to remove my Hawks due to their squealing after 10,000 miles on my Tundra.

Did you clean the rotors with Brake Clean before installing them?

The pads are Powerstop ceramic. They have the built in shims. You can hear them rubbing against the rotors when moving and then they'll squeal for a few seconds.
I cleaned both sides of the rotors with brake cleaner before mounting, then once I had them mounted I wiped them down again.

Another question for y'all, do the calipers have one "M" shaped spring or two? In pics I saw there was one, and the pack I bought came with one for each caliper, but it would make since to have two if there are two caliper pins.

nope only 1 m clip for each side.

I had an out of spec OEM rotor that was rubbing on the backer and binding in the calipers. The dealer is doing a warranty return. I think if you have the means, a runout check is always a good idea. Good luck.

It sounds like the rotor may be the culprit. Before you pull it, take both pads out and scuff them both with emory cloth. Then reinstall.

Also check the pads for cracks. Pads can be good indicators of what is really going on, like looking at plugs to determine engine health.

Calipers used, rebuilt?

If it wasn't doing it to both side I would agree the rotor may be bad, but both sides are making noise.
I took the pads out today and they looked normal, wear looks even. No gouges on them or the rotors.
The calipers were from the junkyard, but I took them apart and rebuilt them. Cleaned the piston and housings, new seals and new boots.

I've been reading around and it sounds like I need to flush the brake fluid and make sure the calipers are full. And to make sure the MC reservoir isn't overfilled.

I'm betting it's dust shield. Besides trimming there's also a spot that needs ground. Take the pads out and spin the hubs by hand with the roots and calipers still in. Still hear anything? If not, it's not the shields

Also check that the springs aren't contacting the rotor. Mine were slightly and I had to bend them a tad.

Did you do the break in after the install? I followed Speedys video from start to finish and it worked like a charm. Maybe the breaking in of the pads and rotors will take the noise away

I can second the post about it being the dust shield.

before jumping to conclusions although the usual caliper section of the dust shield gets easily cut off, I speak from experience with two changes of brakes already on my 231 calipers and rotors. The rotor size were different from my first set of brembo rotors then changing over the another brand rotors (cant even remember.. haha)

But on the inner part of the rotor on the back side, (if your looking at the truck head on, the inner meaning the side next to the engine versus the side facing the world) the rotors from my second change ended up rubbing against the inner part of the dust shield while my brembo rotors did not.

Easily fixed, just ground down that part of the dust shield where it touches the rotor only as much as need be, mount the rotor back up with at least 3 lug nuts, hand tight, then try and sign the rotors. If you feel any grinding, you haven't shaved down enough.

ill get a photo, as all the mumble jumble above may not be making the most amount of sense right now.
its late here.. HAHA

Here is a image that shows where you cut/grind down.
found it on google images.. but the area where I am talking about is where the middle arrow is pointing to. no need to cut just shave it down a few hairs.

Well its not the dustshields. I cut plenty off before I mounted the calipers. And I took a grinding wheel to that small curved middle section and took off close to 1/8". Last night I went under and pulled everything back as far as I could, just to make sure. Still making noise on the way in to work this morning.

I'm going to try and pull a little fluid out of the MC, and rebleed the front. I know its not the back making noise, I can hear it coming from the front...passenger side a little more than driver.

Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to get it taken care of...

did you check the pad spring isn't contacting the rotor? Like I said, mine was. The pad springs should be keeping the pads off the rotors, that's what they're there for. You should have to squeeze them with your fingers to get them to touch the rotors, then they spring back.

Perhaps the mfr. over-shimmed the pads for the rotors? Seems odd because I think you got the Callahan set, but just wondering.

Just drive it a while, take a piece of paper and fold it a couple times and see if it fits between the rotor and the pad. thats about all you should be able to fit, if it doesnt fit, then you need to just let it wear down the pad, then when the squeal finally does stop, probably a couple hundred miles, take them apart and take sandpaper to both surfaces and should be good to go.
this is from personal experience, i had the same issue on the Yukon after a brand new brake job.

Glad all this troubleshooting is happening a day before I do my TBU. Sorry to the OP but I'm glad you had issues. No offense.
