Cost of ownership issue....
I would tell the wife to drive the 4runner for financial reasons. Volvo's are not the most reliable cars/suv and the cost to maintain is going to be greater than the 4runner. Also the resale thing.....4runner has way better resale.
Or....be like me....I'm head of houshold.....final decision is mine....period!

I don't know why you're allowing your company to force you to sell your truck. Sack up, park their stupid car in a corner of their parking garage, and ignore it.
It seems like you could easily accomodate either decision.
Selling a hard to find model like the Trail Edition at the price point you mentioned shouldn't be to hard on autotrader. It seems some areas of the country the Trail is in extremely short supply.
The other option is telling your company they need to cover the cost of additional parking. Just because it seems like a perk, it shouldn't effect your private life i.e. you shouldn't be forced to pay for an additional parking space if you want to keep your personal vehicle. Others have suggested that should things go south you will have no job AND no vehicle at that point, which is a valid concern with getting rid of it.
You mention being a young family and having money available being a priority. Seems like you can't justify the payment because other things are taking priority and this situation provides an out. Since your wife has a vehicle, if push came to shove you could use it or public transportation to find a new job. Living in Boston it would probably be easier to not have a car for awhile anyway compared to somewhere like Kansas where things are much more spread apart and the public transit is lacking...

Bud, you should stop there. Get real. His "company" will tell him to never mind about the car....or his job. Everyone's replaceable and this would get him one giant step closer to the door.

I don't think that's so bad depending on the model.
I really like the Silverado and the Cruze doesn't look too bad for a car.

My wife was offered access to a company car (available for personal and weekend use)... she could refuse it but chooses not too because not having to pay for gas/maintenance/insurance is a huge benefit. For the first year we kept her car just in case, and when she finally got tired of paying for something she never used we sold it on our own accord. If you are ok with your job dictating other areas of your life outside of work, good for you... I am not and I am competent enough that if that were to happen I would move on at no great harm to myself.
You must be an unskilled laborer if you think any resistance to anything your job tells you is a giant step closer to the exit door...

Reality escapes you. Has nothing to do with competence. All to do with perception - which unfortunately often rules when hasty but necessary decisions are made when "managing operating costs".
