Front and Rear Diff fluid change

Mine takes a little over 3 also. I just did it 3 weeks ago so I remember for sure. No idea on the factory underfill, it likely doesn't have to be as high as you and I filled it but as long as I am not blowing gear oil out the breather or past the seals, I am good with it.

Where are you guys buying the gallon bottles of Delvac 75-90? Since this seems to be the go to oil and it has no LS additive which I would like to stay away from since we don't need it, I think this is what I'm going to run in the diffs. Just not sure about it in the transfer case yet.
Seems the transfer case can easily go 50K on the original fill, is that right?

I'm comparing Redline 75w-85 to Royal Purple 75w-90 I had in both diffs before. Marginally better MPG - yes. Sounds? I've no way to hear it under there. The whole drivetrain seem to run smother comparing to RP 75w-90.

I saw the link and appreciate the follow up. Was more looking for local so I don't have to order it. If I have to order it, so be it, but going to try my local NAPA first.

Do you have any heavy duty truck repair facilities around you? I work at rush truck center and thats the stuff we use in diffs and such. Check those places out first.

Well after 3 days of running the delvac in the rear diff and ravenol 75w in the t case, I can say that the truck runs smooth. Again its most likely the fact the fluids havent ever been changed in the 1st 40k miles (I bought used 2 months ago) and the magnet in the rear diff drain plug was absolutely horrid when removed. Ill post back my mpg if its changed at all (getting 18 mpg mixed now).

I have been using redline 75w85 for 10k miles now. It deffinentaly runs smooth, but i have noticed a slight whine in the front when in 4hi or 4 lo when in a slight turn. Only have 21k on the runner and havent used 4wd much more then driving in deep snow. My uncle swears by royal purple and says i should switch. If you research synthentic engine oil, red line doesnt have the best data numbers compared to ams oil, penzoil and royal purple. Mobil 1 is at the botten of this list with the worst results, but thats engine oil. So i have been debating if i should try royal purple max gear 75w90. I dont think redline is junk, i probably should check the front diff to see if it is alittle low. I know i didnt check it again after driving around a bit when i did the change, does anyone else hear a slight whine when in 4hi when in a slight turn under 10 mph?

I am also using ravenol 75w in the t case, runs smoother then 75w90. Im running redline 75w85 in the front and rear diffs and get 18-18.5mpg city. Some guys have said they had a slight mpg loss with 75w90 in diffs but its really a small margin of difference in thickness.

No whine at any speed. I can't imagine oil would cause that, though.
Royal purple is fine oil but expensive and hyped up according to many discussions over at bobistheoilguy. I refuse to use Royal purple because their PDS is so difficult to find. I eventually found it but im sure they really dont want you to see it. Leave the Redline in there.
I know every manufacturer uses different methods of testing to derives these numbers which may skew numbers here and there. However these are published by the oil manufacturer and gives sort of a decent idea of each gear oil's properties.
Could not find a Viscosity index figure for Royal Purple maxgear 75w90.

This is the first i'm hearing Mobil 1 has ever been rated as a bad oil. Everything I've ever seen has put Mobil 1 up there with the best oils on the market.

Yeah its not something I'm worried about currently. It does run smoother ive noticed, especially since I also greased the spiders and driveshafts recently as well. At 40k nothing was ever done previously.
lane:Just so I'm clear, you're saying Mobil 1 75W90 synthetic gear lube is actually engine oil?

LE Differences
Hi all, I've read through this thread and did some thread searches for other answers. This thread in particular has really helpful info and I want to thank all of the contributors. However, I'm left with some questions for the collective brain trust:
1. Looks like no differences in the recommendations for timing or type of fluid to use on an LE AWD. Am I missing anything? Service Manual doesn't seem to indicate anything different except for some changes in quantity, but I'll just fill until it starts coming out, same as everyone else.
2. Has anyone on here done this service to an LE? Can you elaborate on your experience with brand/weight fluid and any differences in drive quality or MPG?
I'm at 50K miles right now and up until a few days ago the dealer had done all of my services due to the extended service warranty I purchased. Now it's on me and I'm happy since I like to get dirty with my T4R (get your mind out of the gutter)! Probably going to change the diffs and TC at 60K which will be in just a couple of months since I drive a ton, not enough off road in my opinion.

He's talking about some poor ratings for M1 motor oil.
I've seen this argument before. I might be mis-remembering but IIRC that M1 Advanced Fuel Economy or a similar uses a base stock that can't legally be called synthetic in Europe and that it doesn't perform as well as some other synthetics in testing.
There are several different M1 motor oils now including Extended Performance, Annual Protection, High Mileage, Advance Fuel Economy and European formula (0w-40).
Take this and all talk with a grain of salt.
I really hope we are all overthinking our Diffs/TC fluids. What are the odds that we will have an oil related failure of these components?
