Front Runner Rack Options

Front Runner ever has sales or discounts? Would love to get one but damn, pricey.

Used bro.. thats your best bet lol.. I got mine used and i love it and glad i didn't pay full price.

I saw one recently come up in the for sale section, couldn't dig it up for you or else i would link you.

Yeah I've been looking around for a bit but I am guessing that once people have drilled the front of their 4Runner, they are sticking to the rack, heh. I'll keep my eyes peeled though, Thanks.

Wanting to upgrade to the full from a 3/4... Not sure though about using a rivnut. Heard about some people going with a nut on the bottom. Would actually go that route, but trying to find out how to drop the headliner enough to get some fingers or an extension in there..

Just wondering why you went with the channel vs. the new side support?

Also, how many additional holes did you drill on each side?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Personal preference really; the model-specific sides sit too tall for me, I believe they're designed to accommodate the under rack table slide with the factory shark fin antenna.

I drilled one hole per side, that was the easiest part. What took time was measuring so that I could get the track-bolt as far forward as possible while still using the factory tower. They make a between-slat adapter that would have made it easier, but I decided to forgo that, again to keep it low.

I fabricated some spacers out of aluminum stock to raise the tracks above the roof a little for clearance although stacked washers would probably work fine. It's not hard, just takes time. If you want the rack on in a day I'd reccomend going with a vehicle specific kit. Let me know if you have any install specific questions.

Did you use the rivnut or did you use a nut?? If I do it, I’m leaning toward the nut, but need to get direction on pulling the front headliner down enough to get in there. Been doing way to much reading on how rivnuts can fail.. even read about using plus nuts instead to rivnuts.

I used an m8 nut and bolt with thread locker. I would not use a rivnut after seeing it with my install, although Frontrunner did include them if I wanted to use them. I had to drop the headliner twice cause I didn't have it tight enough at first (vibrated at speed). You'll want to torque it down good and use some big washers to spread the surface area out on the inside of the roof. My rack is not going anywhere now.

The headliner isn't as big of a deal as the side curtain airbag. I didn't want to mess with that so worked around it which makes for a tight working area. It'll be evident once you get in there.

Now that’s what I was looking for... how much of the headliner did you need to detach in order to get enough room to work in?

Question about the rack to the rails assembly for the 3/4 rack. Are the mounting points of the rails to the rack the same as the cross member mounting points?

I detached the sun visor and removed the plastic on the side windshield pillars, then pulled the weather stripping out from the top of the door.. that was it.

The top of your picture goes into the factory mounts...

Yes but to attach to the rails to the rack do I use the same hardware and the same mounts the the cross member on the rack mount to?

Ok I think your asking if you use the hex button bolts that are used to attach the cross bars to attach the “feet” to the rack... if that’s the question, then no...

A M8 sides on the bottom of the corresponding slat then, goes in the “foot” mounting hole, and secures with a nut.

If that’s not the question, then I’m confused as to what the question is....

You still have your roof moldings?? Guess my passenger side decided to fly away... I’ll buy it off you if you do.

I recently added 7 slats to my 3/4 rack to make a solid platform... didn’t buy one as I didn’t know if the slat insert would work right next to my jerry can holders.. I’ll get around to grabbing 1 more slat, and it will be full solid platform.

Only downside, the thing is a beast... for a full length solid, it would take like 4 guys...

Roof moldings being the black rubber strips running down each side of the roof?
