gas tank size?

so online ive read that a 2000 4 runner has an 18 gallon tank but i purchased my runner about a month ago and i have filled on and driven till the gas light came on and only put in about 10 1/2 gallons. im pretty sure my reserve isnt 8 gallons so im wondering if anyone has heard of people swapping out gas tanks or any advantage it may have aside from less weight

Yeah my Manual says 18 but my gas light came on after only 10 and I'm currently trying to run fuel system cleaner in the next few tanks but I needs to be ran until the tank is almost empty. If I do have an 18 g which I suspect I do Ive already put the cleaner in the last 3 tanks. Does anyone know if this stuff will ruin anything if there's to much in 1 tank.

i say run it till it goes dry, but carry around an small can with like 2 gallons in it so you can get to the next gas station and then see how much you put it, and dont stop filling at the first "click off", pull the nozzle out and listen for the "gurgling" sound to stop then fill some more, on or two time of this is enough to ensure you have a full tank. -the filler spout for the tank is a bad design, it runs flat or level for a ways and doesnt flow freely twards the end of fueling so it builds up a little bit of back pressure and the pump nozzle senses that and clicks off prematurely

lol you're on crack!

18.5 gallon tank in ALL 3rd gens.

And yes, the 1999 and 2000 model's gas gauge is very off. Google it.

I have the same dilema, but my gauge light doesnt come on. I was wondering if there is a fix for using all 17 gallons? Is there a mod or something that we can do to get it fixed and operating properly? I ran out of gas 2 times now and the last time I filled 16.5 gallons. So I still had 2 gallons in there but it started to sputter on me. CEL came on and after 30 mins it turned off. Thank goodness!.

we all have 18.5 gallon tanks but most of us fill up to around 15 tops.
doesnt help our gas gauges are all off as well..
but its all good just dont run it dry!

my gas gauge will fly to 1/4 tank... then hang there till about 200 miles or so then continue its descent...i know i can get 250 city driving so i just go by that. as i think others on here do as well.

No way my 99 has a 13 gallon tank...

Edit: ok your right 18.5 wowww this blows my mind....i always thought all the threads didnt apply to me since i always have filled up from when the gas light comes on and got 13 tops. So i was like ok mines fine! Wow so i technically have 5 more gallons i can use before filling up

It's by a company called restore. It's 2 for 6 at autozone so I got 6 and I was planning on putting them in the next 6 Tanks. Well I'm on my 4th one and if I've had that extra 8 gallons in each tank then there should be a lot of the cleaner stuff In there. Hopefully nothing to bad happens.

dont put any more in and go fill it up right now, then run that thing as dry as you can as fast as you can... who knows what that sh!t is doing to your injector seals or your filter or pump ect... drive the piss outta it to drain that crap as fast as you can... hopefully that crap wont eat up your o2 sensor or cat

I wouldn't worry all that much. Just drive it and then fill up without that sruff. Don't worry, all should be ok without rash decisions on siphoning or excess uneeded driving.

Doing either of these is not a great idea. IIRC, the fuel pump is inside the tank. It is cooled by the fuel, so if you run the tank dry, you could damage the pump.

Also, topping off beyond the click is not a good idea. Guys that have done that have had liquid fuel back up into their charcoal canister, ruining it (it's expensive to replace). Not saying this will happen, but it has.

There is at least one thread on here talking about each issue. You can search for it and get some additional background.

You shouldn't be running out at 16.5 gallons. I have filled over 17 gallons, and I wasn't stuttering. Do you have any dents in the tank? That could affect the overall capacity. If you are on a hill, that could throw it off when the tank is low too.

while yes i would agree with you on both counts, if done every time. running you tank dry or close to dry once will not hurt it, no way, maybe if your pump was on its last legs and needed a straw to break its back but... now people who continually do this yes, it will shorten the life span of the pump. and we use the same tank and filer neck as the tacomas, only our tank dosent sit as low so you cant get the full 18.5 in there if you dont let it drain out of the filler after it clicks off... i do this every time, and i have filled it to the max before, it took another 2.5 gallons after the fist click, there is no way that filler neck is 2.5 gallons. the neck goes level for about 2 feet before it dumps onto the tank. and if your runner sags in the rear at all then you are actually pumping fuel uphill to get it into the tank from the filler neck thats why it shuts off prematurely. it wont hurt it if you click it top it off once or twice, it just makes sure you are "full". now that being said, if you continued to pump and pump and pump after the first click off, yeah you could pump fuel back into the charcoal canister and thats not so good like you said. but neither is all that crap he has in his fuel system right now, that stuff will eat the seals/O-rings around his injectors and rubber lines and pump(with the amount of concentrate he has in there right now) so to me the potential risk is much higher with the fuel "treatment" crap imo

im borrowing a large drum from a friend and emptying my tank into it then ill just go fill up about half way and top it off from the drum and ill just keep doing this till its gone. this way makes me feel a lot better then trying to burn through it quickly

I second this. You don't need to drain it. just drive it.
