gas tank size?

To you people "topping off" your tanks, you are possible fouling your evaporative system..

They do that so later on they can post why they are getting a evap system error code and ask for help in troubleshooting a solution.

I just put 16.3 gallons in my 1997 4Runner, after driving around 20 miles with the empty light coming on.

I've never quite figured out how much fuel is left when the empty light comes on . . . .

When the light comes on your have about 3 gallons in the tank.

Today I managed to drive 29.5 miles past the yellow light. I know I got really close to empty because twice on a right turn and then a left easy turn the engine momentarily sucked air. I know not supposed to do this, I was trying to finish the last bit of a concentrated dose of seafoam in the tank - not doing that again.

So i think it can vary how much remains when the light comes on. Oh and I drove it Easy those last 'yellow' miles and mostly at 70mph w/A-C on. Luck all. :cowboy:

dont put any more in and go fill it up right now, then run that thing as dry as you can as fast as you can... who knows what that sh!t is doing to your injector seals or your filter or pump ect... drive the piss outta it to drain that crap as fast as you can... hopefully that crap wont eat up your o2 sensor or cat

Now I’m nervous... I traded my 96 f250 7.3 for this 02 Sport and for a few tanks used some Lucas fuel treatment, the same stuff I used for my 7.3 (good for diesel or gas). After I quit using it my CEL light came on and threw codes P0440 and P0420, both of which are emissions which may involve the O2 sensor or the cat.

I assumed Lucas was fine for my Sport. Did it screw up my rig?

Could be coincidence. Test your sensors.

I have always "heard" it is NEVER GOOD TO RUN A GAS TANK ALMOST DRY as the fuel pump will suck up any debris/junk that has settled down in the tank. Unless I have cleaned out my fuel tank and know it is clean, I just fill it up a few miles after the light comes on. I still have the original pump and no issues after 300K miles (knock on wood.....)

No way my 99 has a 13 gallon tank...

Edit: ok your right 18.5 wowww this blows my mind....i always thought all the threads didnt apply to me since i always have filled up from when the gas light comes on and got 13 tops. So i was like ok mines fine! Wow so i technically have 5 more gallons i can use before filling up

No cause same!! I’m canadian so i use litres but my manual says 70L (18.5gal) tank, and i run it past empty everytime and only manage to squeeze 55L in. This blows my mind! Now i know that i have an extra 15L and the gas gauge is just very off lol.
