Been wanting to regear since I got the new tires. Contemplating 4.88s or 5.29s. With my stock gears the 305/70/16 tires have contributed a noticeable power loss. I also want to through in a grizzley locker, but that is aside the point. What gears should I get?

Noticed my driver side rear axle seals broke, spraying gear oil everywhere. Took it apart anticipating just replacing the inner axle seals,
and found the wheel bearing was absolutely shot, there was way too much play and for all I know they could be the 200k old originals.
So taking the axle shafts to a shop to get it pressed for new bearings and axle seals.
The whole hub was soaked:

Possible Axle seal solution

Been working on my axle seals today and took my axle shaft down to a friend's shop to get new bearings, retainers, and abs ring pressed on.
He described these axles being so notorious for seal leaks because often the inner axle seal doesn't even meet the retainer on the shaft... so there tends
to be a gap right there or at least they are not snug together.

So when I got the shaft back today my friend at the shop showed me why he didn't press the retainer all the way down to the ABS ring
You can see how the retainer is not pressed all the way down against the ABS Ring
IMG_0659.jpg

Here is what it would look like inside the axle housing and how the inner axle seal would fit flush on top of the retainer

IMG_0660.jpg
I measured the inside of the axle housing from the end to the inner axle seal, and it measures perfectly for the retainer to fit snuggly against the inner seal.
Unfortunately I did not keep the exact measurements anymore, but you guys get the idea. By eliminating the gap between the retainer on the axle shaft and
the inner axle seal hopefully there will be a less chance of leaking.
So far I have only driven a couple miles and everything is still dry, I will try to update after substantial driving

After completing the seals/bearings I also replaced the shoes and bleed the brakes. Also replaced the rear diff oil. Overall the rear end got super greasy so I degreased the whole undercarriage and pressure washed it.

Since I have owned my 4r my exhaust has been falling apart. There were numerous holes in the muffler and tailpipe, and pretty much all the
hangers have rusted off. I had wrapped welding rod around the muffler and tailpipe just to hold it in place.

After searching far and wide for a cat-back exhaust I found the Gibson system decently priced from Burtman. It is crazy how hard it is to find an
exhaust system especially out here in Hawaii.

I also ended up cutting out the Cat and adding 2.5" pipe in its place. It was old I don't need any extra crap to choke up the forced induction engine,
after all gotta let it breathe... and fart.

While cutting the Cat out I damaged the O2 sensor I was gonna put on the replacement pipe like a dumby. Went to oreillys and got ripped off for a
new one.. cost $180... and CEL is on most likely because of it. Im getting a denso O2 sensor for a quarter of the price and hopefully solve the CEL.
Regardless of the CEL truck runs fine and sounds extremely aggressive.

Here is the sound Clip

Figured out the CEL. Oreillys ended up selling me the AF sensor and I didn't even notice, took it back pissed,
got an O2 sensor, saved over $100, fixed CEL.

Overall truck runs great, no more exhaust rattling. Call it placebo, I definitly feel like it opened up a little horsepower.

Gibson exhaust is loud, also can contribute a little of that to cutting out the cat. But as for sound it is very raspy at
low ends, and I think the loudest. On the highway it is nice, but when going slow in neigborhoods definitely not the
best choice. In the end I dont mind because i live in the boonies, and I like the sound a lot especially on the highway.
Just happy to have a tight hole-less exhaust.

Nice job on the Gibson install, I love the sound of mine so far even with the Cat in there.

How do you like the Uniball UCAs thus far? I've had a set of AllPro's sitting around for almost a year now waiting to install them, I've just been lazy. Hoping to hear it's worth it haha.

And is that a wave storm on top of your 4Runner? Hahaha I want one so badly to mess around on in shore break crap.

Best of luck with your surgery this week man!

Thanks man!! Love the sound especially when it opens up on the highway!

So far the UCAs have been great. They handle the angle way better especially at full droop. I have heard they get squeaky,
but I would just need to lubricate it with tri-flow, but honestly I havent heard anything from them. It is just nice not to see the
busted UBJ's. I highly recommend them so far, relatively easy install, the hardest thing for me was getting the old UBJs out.

Haha yeah I love the wavestorm, so much fun and such a good price! I bring it almost every time I surf just in case it would
come in handy. I go through them pretty quickly though, but at least costco takes anything back haha.

Thanks just got the surgery and so far so good, couple brackets in my shoulder, but Im pretty drugged up so aint all that bad.
Really appreciate it!

Went exploring last weekend

Had some clunking in the front end when off road, noticed my steering rack bushings were toast, replaced them with the energy suspension
bushings and all back to normal

This is also from last year so sorry if it sounds like a broken record, again just trying to organize the build thread.

Do you still have the billies on the first perch? I think I saw that you were planning on bumping them up, but then I saw that you are running a spacer.
Curious because I am planning on running LC coils in the rear and TRD Tundra Struts up front.
Truck looks great by the way. Jealous of the lack of rust you have out there.

Yeah its still on the first perch, with a spacer. I was going to raise it but the tundras are already stiff enough as is and I didn't want to compromise comfort.
Thanks man, trust me I live in the middle of the pacific ocean, most cars rust out in 15 years, I just wash my undercarriage more than I shower haha.

Would you (can you?) use a different spring if you did it over?

If I had the money I would prefer to go with toytec adjustable coilovers (or something more expensive), but I got the tundras for a steal, and honestly I do think they are the best bang for the buck. A lot of guys on here love the tundras, as do I because they are well worth the value, but there are times when sitting in the rear with the soft LC coils are more comfy. That being said, if you find a pair of tundras it might be worth it to jump on them.
